The deregulation of aviation markets in Europe and the United Sates had led airlines to reconfigure their networks into hub-and-spoke systems. Recent trends of "Open Skies" in the Asian aviation market are also expected to prompt the reformation of airlines' networks in the region. A significant connectivity index is a crucial tool for airlines and airport authorities to estimate the degree of hub-and-spoke operations. Therefore, this paper suggests a new index, Continuous Indirect Connectivity Index (CICI), for measuring the coordination of airlines' flight schedules, applying it to the Asian, European and the American aviation markets. CICI consists of three components:(i) temporal connectivity to identify the attractiveness between connection flights, (ii) spatial connectivity to differentiate the attractiveness by de-routing distance with continuous linear function, and (iii) relative intensity to reflect the effect of direct flight frequency on transfer routes. CICI is evaluated to examine a casual relationship through regression analyses with two dependent variables of the number of transfer passengers and transfer rates. Compared with Danesi's index and Doganis' index through evaluation processes, CICI has a higher coefficient value of determination, implying that it explains the relationship between connectivity and transfer passengers more precisely.

The issues of developing the value added services for public transport connectivity and transfer with information and communication technologies has been discussed in terms of incorporating system facilities with public transit modes to increase the ridership of public transit. This paper demonstrates a conceptual model for providing the location based public transit transfer information service on demand with respect to system requirements, subsystems, and logical architecture based on the national ITS architecture. The subsystems in this study which include transfer information center, parking concierge, user route guidance and information provision system are also investigated in detail in order for information service and/or contents provider to develop business models on public transit connectivity and transfer. This model is expected to be utilized in providing the variety of service models with the different types of public transit connectivity and transfer systems according to the system scale and the public transit modes.
As transit networks are becoming more multimodal, the concept of connectivity of transit networks becomes important. This study aims to develop a quantitative model for measuring the connectivity of multimodal transit networks. To that end, we select, as evaluation measures of a transit line, its length, capacity, and speed. We then define the connecting power of a transit line as the product of those measures. The degree centrality of a node, which is a widely used centrality measure in social network analysis, is employed with appropriate modifications suited for transit networks. Using the degree centrality of a transit stop and the connecting powers of transit lines serving the transit stop, we develop an index quantifying the level of connectivity of the transit stop. From the connectivity indexes of transit stops, we derive the connectivity index of a transit line as well as an area of a multimodal transit network. In addition, we present a method to evaluate the connectivity of a transfer center using the connectivity indexes of transit stops and passenger acceptance rate functions. A case study shows that the connectivity evaluation model developed in this study takes well into consideration characteristics of multimodal transit networks, adequately measures the connectivity of transit stops, lines, and areas, and furthermore can be used in determining the level of service of transfer centers.
Until now, in planning and constructing KTX and the Express Way, the connectivity and transfer between these facilities have not been considered. In this study the effect of mode choice behavior by connecting KTX and the Express Way is analyzed through estimating Multinomial Logit Model and Binary Logit Model. The SP and RP surveys to develop these models were carried out and the data were selected from the passengers using the KTX station, Express Bus Terminals and Rest Areas in the Express Way. To test the effect of connectivity and transfer in the field, the case study for Dongtan KTX station was carried out. According to the results, connecting the KTX station and the Express Way has the effect of increasing the demand by 30%. And this is caused by saving about 120 minutes of traveling time from Seoul to Pusan. This study shows that the connectivity and transfer can increase the efficiency of transportation system and the improvement in the mobility and accessibility will maximize the usages of these two facilities.

Sensor networks and car networks that have different structure from that of conventional TCP/IP network require extreme network environment due to frequent change of connectivity. Because such extreme network environment has characteristics like unreliable link connectivity, long delay time, asymmetrical data transfer rate, and high error rate, etc., it is difficult to perform normally with the conventional TCP/P-based routing. DTNs (delay and disruption tolerant network) was designed to support data transfer in extreme network environment with long delay time and no guarantee for continuous connectivity between terminals. This study suggests an algorithm that limits the maximum number of copying transferred message to L by improving the spray and wait routing protocol, which is one of the conventional DTNs routing protocols, and using the azimuth and density data of the mobile nods. The suggested algorithm was examined by using ONE, a DTNs simulator. As a result, it could reduce the delay time and overhead of unnecessary packets compared to the conventional spray and wait routing protocol.
This work is concerned with the topology optimization of three-dimensional cooling fins or heat sinks. Motivated by earlier success of the Internal Element Connectivity Method (I-ECP) method in two-dimensional problems, the extension of I-ECP to three-dimensional problems is carried out. The main efforts were made to maintain the numerical trouble-free characteristics of I-ECP for full three-dimensional problems; a serious numerical problem appearing in thermal topology optimization is erroneous temperature undershooting. The effectiveness of the present implementation was checked through the design optimization of three-dimensional fins.
Due to the traffic congestion and public-oriented transportation policies of Seoul, public transportation is receiving attention and being used increasingly. However, current transport routes configuration is showing unbalanced accessibility throughout the city area creating differences in time, expenses and metal burden of users who travel the same distances. One of the reasons is that transport route planning has been partially empirical and non-quantitative tasks due to lack of relevant methods for assessing the complexity of the transport routes. This paper presents a method to compute the connectivity of public transport system based on the topological structure of the network of transport routes. The main methodological issue starts from the fact that the more transfers take place, the deeper the connectivity becomes making that area evaluated as less advantageous as for public transport accessibility. By computing the connectivity of each bus or subway station with all others in a city, we can quantify the differences in the serviceability of city areas based on the public transportation. This paper is based on the topological interpretation of the routes network and suggests an algorithm that can automate the computation process. The process is illustrated using a simple artificial network data built in a GIS.
Recently the Korean Government is increasing investment and interest on railway in the transportation field as "low carbon and green growth" policy become main national development strategy. While railway competitiveness is weakening over the road from the inconvenient door-to-door and transfer system of railway, it is meaningful to review excellent railway transfer system of advanced countries and adapt their implications for Korea. Their transfer systems like Japan, Hongkong, France, U.K. and German can be categorized in this research as kinds of transfer & connectivity system and transfer facility & flow planning, and, as a result, their implications can be concluded. Also, analyzing transfer system of Korea's main stations and reviewing the difference between Korea and other countries, this paper suggests main principles and directions of urban planning, alignment of rail line, partnership of project stakeholder in the establishment of transfer system in the railway station in the future.

Due to the traffic congestion of the city and public transportation-oriented policies in large cities, public transportation is receiving attention and being used increasingly. However, relatively less research on the design and distribution of public transportation network and limitations in quantitative approaches have made implementation and operation practically difficult. Over- or under-supply of transportation routes caused unbalanced connectivity among areas and, thus, differences in time, expenses and metal burden of users traveling the same distances. On the other hand, the Space Syntax theory, originally designed to calculate the connectivity of urban or architectural spaces, helps generate quantitative connectivity of whole space simply based on the spacial structure. This study modified the original Space Syntax algorithm to fit the public transportation problem and showed how it is applied to a transportation network by creating an artificial GIS network.
After the deregulation of the aviation market in the United States in 1978, airlines took advantage of the possibilities of the liberalized market and reorganized their networks. Then, the hub-and-spoke networks became widely used in the aviation market. The framework of hub-and-spoke network made it feasible to amplify flight networks. Thus, a number of airlines were able to fly to more destinations than ever before through the networks. Amplification of networks can be implementing through the transfer of passengers, transshipment of cargo, or both most researches have been concentrated on the passenger aspect at airports worldwide. Air cargo, however, has become one of the most significant areas at hub airports to keep their leading position in terms of the provision of services and handling volumes. This paper investigates the connectivity of airfreight networks as the temporal concentrations in current network at Incheon International Airport. In order to evaluate airline flight schedule effects to stimulate hubbing at an airport, the indirect connectivity can be considered to be the number of direct frequencies, the minimum connecting times and the quality of the connection determine indirect connectivity. Therefore the connectivity of freight transshipment depends on both the quality of the connection at the hub airport and the quality of the indirect flight compared to the direct flight. In addressing these issues, this paper analyzes the connectivity of flight schedules using a temporal wave-system structure and estimates the degree of connectivity and quality of connectivity applying the NETSCAN model.
