  • Cognitive science attempts to explain human intelligence on the basis of success of artificial neural network, which is called connectionism. The neural network, e.g., deep learning, seemingly promises connectionism to go beyond what it is. But those(Fodor & Pylyshyn, Fodor, & McLaughlin) who advocate classical computationalism, or symbolism claim that connectionism must fail since it cannot represent the relation between human thoughts and human language. The neural network lacks systematicity, so any output of neural network is at best association or accidental combination of data plugged in input units. In this paper, I first introduce structure of artificial neural network and what connectionism amounts to. Second, I shed light on the problem of systematicity the classical computationalists pose for the connectionists. Third, I briefly introduce how those who advocate connectionism respond to the criticism while noticing Smolensky's theory of vector product. Finally, I examine the debate of computationalism and connectionism on systematicity, and show how the problem of systematicity contributes to the development of connectionism and computationalism both.

  • It seems reasonable to assume that the individualized learning means more than simple teaching-learning method, so the instructional method has attracted a fair amount of attention not only in classroom, but also in the field of a adult education, cooperate education, and so on. In order to have an effect on individualized learning, we need to analyze and measure the learner's characteristic. However it is difficult to represent in quantified form because the conception and category of learner's characteristic is various and extensive. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a quantification method of learner's characteristic, which is limited to learner's cognitive structure and style, and is represented in the light of connectionism, verify the validity. The learner's cognitive structure in this paper was represented, which simplified the learner's cognitive structure. Additionally, the cognitive style in this paper was limited to inertia of knowledge for learner's cognition.

  • Conceptual teaming has been one of the important issue in science education, and its theory and method has been interacted with the studies of philosophy of science, cognitive science, and cognitive psychology. The last two decades have witnessed a remarkable growth of the study on brain-style computation, i.e. connectionism. This study aimed to investigate the properties of the connectionist views of the concept and its implications in the conceptual learning of science. In connectionist views, a concept was represented as a pattern of activity distributed over many connected units, and a kind of network composed of many sub-concept units. And the 'distributed representation' had the features of the constructivity, the automatically generalization, and the tunability. On the base of these views, it was suggested that (ⅰ) 'Typically-Perceived-Situation', a kind of mental representation rising spontaneously in an individual mind when someone is thinking about any object, should be highlighted, and (ⅱ) the roles of the sub-concept units in formation of concept and the resolution of concept into the sub-concept units should be highlighted. Finally the meanings of these implications in conceptual teaming of science are discussed.

  • The National Department of Education approved the 'Information and Library' 'Curriculum which contained the educational role of school libraries. This curriculum contained and integrated the library guidance, reading education and cooperative instruction that teacher-librarians have taught. The school education has basically been led, based on curriculum. Therefore, it is important to have all kinds of educational activities related to the school library approved as school curriculum. This study is to introduce Base Connectionism, Base Integrationism, Top 456 Approach, and Curriculum-Based Approach, based on 'Information and Library' curriculum.

  • Models for human cognition currently discussed in cognitive science cannot be appropriate ones. The symbolic model of the traditional artificial intelligence works for reasoning and problem-solving tasks, but doesn't fit for pattern recognition such as letter/sound cognition. Connectionism shows the contrary phenomena to those of the traditional artificial intelligence. Connectionist systems has been shown to be very strong in the tasks of pattern recognition but weak in most of logical tasks. Brooks' situated action theory denies the. notion of representation which is presupposed in both the traditional artificial intelligence and connectionism and suggests a subsumption model which is based on perceptions coming from real world. However, situated action theory hasn't also been well applied to human cognition so far. In emphasizing those characteristics of models I refer those models 'left-brain model', 'right-brain model', and 'robot model' respectively. After I examine those models in terms of substantial items of cognitions- mental state, mental procedure, basic element of cognition, rule of cognition, appropriate level of analysis, architecture of cognition, I draw three arguments of embodiment. I suggest a way of unifying those existing models by examining their theoretical compatability which is found in those arguments.
