  • In order to effectively manage forested areas in South Korea on a national scale, using remotely sensed data is considered most suitable. In this study, utilizing Land coverage maps and Forest type maps of national geographic information instead of collecting field data was tested for conducting supervised classification on SPOT-5 and KOMPSAT-2 imagery focusing on forested areas. Supervised classification were conducted in two ways: analysing a whole area around the study site and/or only forested areas around the study site, using Support Vector Machine. The overall accuracy for the classification on the whole area ranged from 54.9% to 68.9% with kappa coefficients of over 0.4, which meant the supervised classification was in general considered moderate because of sub-classifying forested areas into three categories (i.e. hardwood, conifer, mixed forests). Compared to this, the overall accuracy for forested areas were better for sub-classification of forested areas probably due to less distraction in the classification. To further improve the overall accuracy, it is needed to gain individual imagery rather than mosaic imagery to use more spetral bands and select more suitable conditions such as seasonal timing. It is also necessary to obtain precise and accurate training data for sub-classifying forested areas. This new approach can be considered as a basis of developing an excellent analysis manner for understanding and managing forest landscape.

  • To understand natural regeneration and stand development after fire in mixed broadleaved-coniferous forests of Sikhote-Alin Mountains, ten sample plots of $50m{\times}50m$ size were established in 1975 and 1983 at the stands burned by wildfires in 1973 and 1982, respectively. And, the number of naturally regenerated seedlings were monitored in two $50m{\times}4m$ subplots in each plot. The most fire-sensitive conifer species is Abies nephrolepis, while Betula costata is the most fire-sensitive broadleaved tree species. The most fire-resistant species were Q. mongolica, T. taquetii and A. mono. The results of 20 and 30 years after the fire showed that pioneer tree species, e.g. Populus, Salix, and Betula, were regenerated immediately at the early stage of stand development and grew where there is a mono canopy layer with high density. On the other hand, the densities of successors, e.g. Pinus koraiensis, Picea jezoensis, Abies nephrolepis, Acer mono and Tilia taquetii, which were present in the study plots before the fire, increased gradually. Naturally regenerated tree species after forest fire by the growth rate were divided into three groups according to their annual height growth. The seral tree species (Betula costata, Betula platyphylla, Padus maackii, Populus tremula and Sarix caprea) belong to the first group and have the highest growth rate (from 40 to 96 cm per year). The late successional broad-leaved trees (Tilia taquetii, Acer mono and Quercus mongolica) belong to the second group and have intermediate annual height growth (from 3.7 to 13.5 cm per year). The late successional coniferous species (Picea jezoensis, Pinus koraiensis and Abies nephrolepis) form the third group and have the least annual height growth (from 1.4 to 3.5 cm per year).

  • Adventitious shoots were induced from cambial tissue cultures of 3-year-old seedlings using BLG mineral salts medium supplemented with 10 mM glutamine and 30 mM sucrose. The optimum growth regulator level for bud induction was 4,5 $\mu$M BA which produced average 25.5 shoots per cambium segment. Induced buds were elongated on GD medium supplemented with 30 mM sucrose followed by LMG medium supplemented with 30 mM sucrose for further shoot elongation. Elongated shoots were rooted on half-strength GD medium containing $0.54 ;\mu\textrm{M}$ NAA with the frequency of 20%. This system proved the high morphogenic potential of cambial tissue in larch.

  • This study was conducted to maintain the productivity of forest production and byproducts production of natural forest. Distribution of wild edible herb species and correlations between wild edible herb species and forest-type, and site factors were surveyed on national forest in Changjeon-ni, Pyungchang-gun, Kang-won-do. Ligularia fischeri was distributed mainly on cutting sites or meadow or Quercus mongolica forest, Pimpinella brachycarpa did on broadleaved mixed forest, and Synurus deltoides did cutting sites or meadow. On conifer plantations major wild edible herb species were not distributed. Pimpinella brachycarpa and Ligularia fischera were distributed mainly on the site of wet soil-moisture condition, Codonopsis lanceolata, Saussurea grandifolia and Synurus deltoides were distributed randomly. The distribution of Ligularia fischeri and Pimpinella brachycarpa were significantly different between slope directions, but those of Codonopsis lanceolata, Saussurea grandifolia and Synurus deltoides were not significant. Ligularia fischeri and Pimpinella brachycarpa were distributed more frequently in north directed slope than the other. Highly positive correlations were proved Ligularia fischeri and Pimpinella brachycarpa, Aconitum jaluense and Veratrum patulum; Pimpinella brachycarpa and Smilacina japonica, Aconitum jaluense and Veratrum patulum.

  • Landsat satellite images were analyzed to study vegetation change patterns of warm-temperate forests from 1991 to 2002 in Wando. For this purpose, Landsat TM satellite image of 1991 and Landsat ETM image of 2002 were used for vegetation classification using ENVI image processing software. Four different forest types were set as a classification criteria; evergreen broadleaf, evergreen conifer, deciduous broadleaf, and others. Unsupervised classification method was applied to classily forest types. Although it was impossible to draw exact forest types in rocky areas because of differences in data detection time and rough resolution of image, 2002 data revealed that total 2,027ha of evergreen broadleaf forests were growing in Wando. Evergreen broadleaves and evergreen conifers increased in total areas compared to 11 years ago, but there was sharp decrease in deciduous broadleaves. GIS-based management system for warm-temperate forest was done using Arc/Info. Geographic and attribute database of Wando such as vegetation, soils, topography, land owners were built with Arc/Info and ArcView. Graphic user interface which manages and queries necessary data was developed using Avenue.

  • Structural characteristics and successional trends of actual forest vegetation in Youngil soil erosion control district, South Korea, were studied and described by the phytosociological investigations and diameter measurement. And also the incremental growth pattern of the major trees for erosion control analyzed using increment core. Sixty-eight releves were sampled with $100m^2$ plots. Two main vegetation types (Lespedeza bicolor-Miscanthus sinensis-type and Alnus firma-Styrax japonica-type) have been distinguished and typified nine vegetation units. Constancy classes diagram showed that the higher species (${\geq}IV$) have only 2.6% and that most species occurred were rare and had low abundances. The successional trends of the actual forest vegetation would be mostly changed as Quercus serrata forest. Annual diameter growth was 3.0~3.4 mm in case of conifer (Pinus rigida and Pinus thunbergii), and the broad-leaved trees (Alnus firma, Robinia pseudo-acacia, and Alnus hirsuta) showed 4.3~4.9 mm. The incremental growth patterns showed to be decreased rapidly since twenty to twenty-five years regardless of the species of trees.

  • The operational availability of multispectral high-resolution satellite imagery, opens up new possibilities for updating forest map. Compared with information acquired by traditional methods (Panchromatic Aerial Photo), these data of for a number of advantages. In this study used 1m spatial resolution and 4 multispectral band, which are capability to update forest map of kind of tree. From the result of this study, First, the visual analysis of the colour composites of the multispectral data made it possible to distinguish some species(conifer, broad-leaved, un-stocked, arable land). Second, forest map and orthorectiffd satellite imagery are not match in the boundary of forest, therefore work have some troubles in the modification of forest map. Third, the distinguish from age-class, girth-class and density are much need experience and skillful about sample such as aerial photo.

  • We studied the degree of damage of trees which have been chronically damaged by environmental pollutants and the area of damaged stands in each region of the middle part of Korea with three tree species - Picea abies, Abies holophylla and Pinus densiflora. So as to diagnose the degree of tree damage in an early stage, We investigated injury index and measured contact angle and finally got the following results; 1) Visible and physiological damage such as the increase of injury index and the decrease of contact angle was serious centering around metropolitan cities live Seoul and Inchon; 2) The trees of all of 14 sites surveyed were damaged by environmental pollutants although there was difference to some extent among sites. Especially, the degree of damage appeared to be increased gradually in the western parts along including Inchon, the seacoasts. In fact, more systematic studies for this issue should be continued in other regions and countermeasures should be devised.
