A real-time multiple vehicle tracking method for traffic congestion identification

  • Traffic congestion is a severe problem in many modern cities around the world. Real-time and accurate traffic congestion identification can provide the advanced traffic management systems with a reliable basis to take measurements. The most used data sources for traffic congestion are loop detector, GPS data, and video surveillance. Video based traffic monitoring systems have gained much attention due to their enormous advantages, such as low cost, flexibility to redesign the system and providing a rich information source for human understanding. In general, most existing video based systems for monitoring road traffic rely on stationary cameras and multiple vehicle tracking method. However, most commonly used multiple vehicle tracking methods are lack of effective track initiation schemes. Based on the motion of the vehicle usually obeys constant velocity model, a novel vehicle recognition method is proposed. The state of recognized vehicle is sent to the GM-PHD filter as birth target. In this way, we relieve the insensitive of GM-PHD filter for new entering vehicle. Combining with the advanced vehicle detection and data association techniques, this multiple vehicle tracking method is used to identify traffic congestion. It can be implemented in real-time with high accuracy and robustness. The advantages of our proposed method are validated on four real traffic data.

  • 3차원 분산가상환경의 확장성에 대한 연구는 전역적인 공간분할을 통한 관심영역(AOI)의 설정에 초점을 맞추어왔으며 참여자들의 밀집화로 인한 AOI 내의 혼잡성에 대한 부분은 거의 다루어지지 않았다고 할 수 있다. 실제적으로 AOI의 혼잡성은 네트워크 대역폭 또는 렌더링시간 등 시스템 자원을 고갈시키고 참여자간 정상적인 상호작용의 수행을 어렵게 하여 시스템의 확장성과 밀접한 관련이 있음을 알 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 AOI의 혼잡성을 확장가능한 DVE에서 해결되어야 할 문제점으로 정의하고 이에 대한 효과적인 제어메커니즘으로 혼잡도 측정 및 조절모델을 제시하고자 한다. 제안된 모델은 궁극적으로 AOI 내에서 참여자 집단의 고밀도화로 인한 시스템 자원의 고갈방지와 안정적인 상호작용성의 유지를 목표로 하고 있다. 제안된 모델의 성능평가를 위하여 AOI 혼잡도에 동적으로 반응하는 자원비용모델을 정의하여 기존 모델과의 비교 실험을ㆍ수행하였다.

안정동력학 모형에서 최선 통행료 및 차선 통행료 (First- and Second-best Pricing in Stable Dynamic Models)

  • This study examined the first- and second-best pricing by stable dynamics in congested transportation networks. Stable dynamics, suggested by Nesterov and de Palma (2003), is a new model which describes and provides a stable state of congestion in urban transportation networks. The first-best pricing in user equilibrium models introduces user-equilibrium in the system-equilibrium by tolling the difference between the marginal social cost and the marginal private cost on each link. Nevertheless, the second-best pricing, which levies the toll on some, but not all, links, is relevant from the practical point of view. In comparison with the user equilibrium model, the stable dynamic model provides a solution equivalent to system-equilibrium if it is focused on link flows. Therefore the toll interval on each link, which keeps up the system-equilibrium, is more meaningful than the first-best pricing. In addition, the second-best pricing in stable dynamic models is the same as the first-best pricing since the toll interval is separately given by each link. As an effect of congestion pricing in stable dynamic models, we can remove the inefficiency of the network with inefficient Braess links by levying a toll on the Braess link. We present a numerical example applied to the network with 6 nodes and 9 links, including 2 Braess links.

일반균형의 관점에서 본 교통정책의 효율성 (혼잡세와 한계비용요금정책을 중심으로) (Efficiency of Transportation Policies from the General Equilibrium Perspective (The Cases of Congestion Tax and Marginal Cost Pricing))

  • 혼잡세나 한계비용요금정책은 교통시설의 이용에 혼잡이 있거나 서비스 제공에 규모의 경제가 존재하는 경우 강력히 추천되는 정책도구이다. 그러나 본 논문에서는 그와 같은 시각은 당해 시설 서비스 시장만 고려할 때만 타당할 뿐 다른 시장과의 상호작용을 염두에 둔 일반균형적인 관점에서는 일반적으로 성립되지 않음을 보인다. 또한 각 정책에 대해 혼잡세나 한계비용요금정책이 실패로 돌아가는 예를 구체적으로 보이고 그에 대한 정책적 대안이 제시된다. 이 과정에서 이용량 제한이나 평균비용 요금정책 등이 놀랍게도 전통적 수단보다 우수한 정책으로 등장한다. 그러나, 이 결과는 특수한 상황에서만 성립하는 것으로 이와 관련된 연구과제들이 결론적으로 제시된다.

  • PURPOSES : Expressways experience chronic and recurring congestion, especially during weekends and holidays, because of the increased demands for leisure-related travel. The alternatives to solve chronic and recurring congestion may be three-fold: (1) physical expansion of expressway capacities, (2) road pricing, and (3) temporal and spatial distribution of traffic demands. Among these, the third alternative may be the most cost-effective method for the Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC) that can be achieved by using the existing ITS infrastructure. METHODS : KEC initiated a pilot study in which the traffic on congested expressways was managed by providing traffic condition information (i.e., travel times) of neighboring national highways for taking detours via variable message signs (VMS). This study aimed to estimate the detour rate, and the two pilot studies on Seohaean and Yeongdong expressways yielded many benefits. RESULTS : It was revealed that the total length of congestion segments decreased by 7.8 km, and the average travel speed increased by 5.3 km/h. CONCLUSIONS : Based on these findings, it was concluded that the propagation of detour information via VMSs during congestion hours can help reduce congestion on expressways and increase the benefits of the entire network.

철도물류 효율화를 위한 DMT수송시스템 현황분석 (DMT Transport System Analysis for Rail Logistics Efficiency)

The freight transport by railway can have decided advantages over trucks in terms of energy efficiency, emissions and cost for certain freight movements, just as transportation in the metropolitan region can have great advantages over driving truck. But the freight transport by truck should gain significant mobility benefits from a freight railway system. Thus, the DMT(Dual Mode Trailer) transport system which is coupled railway transport advantages with load transport advantages has been developed and used in the european countries. The DMT transport will therefore serve the areas required by transport organizers. This paper describes the various DMT transport systems and its strength and weakness.

터널 화재진압시스템 도입에 따른 재난 안전비용의 경제성 분석 연구 (A Study on the Economic Analysis of Disaster Safety Costs by the Water-Bulwark System against the Tunnel Fire)

  • This study attempted to analyze the comparative advantage in terms of disaster safety costs in verifying the effectiveness and economic feasibility of the high-performance water-bulwark system in the pole tunnel, which was recently promoted as a part of the acceleration of vehicles. The tunnel to be analyzed was divided into a short tunnel(Anyang, Cheonggye) and a long tunnel(Suraksan, Sapaesan). As a result, it was analyzed that 25% of the improvement effect would occur if one lane was secured by applying the Water-Bulwark System. It was analyzed that this is because the time value cost, which accounts for a large proportion of the traffic congestion cost of short tunnels and pole tunnels, differs depending on the congestion time and traffic volume, not the length of the tunnel.

  • Construction works of civil infrastructure projects generate a considerable amount of carbon emissions by utilizing a set of energy-intensive equipment and causing traffic congestion. However, the voluntary efforts of the contractor to mitigate these emissions are at an early stage. To address this issue, this paper explores the opportunities to take carbon emissions that would be caused from construction works into consideration in contracting methods and procedures. The opportunities for reducing carbon emissions from construction activities themselves are examined under the framework of Performance Contracting for Construction (PCfC), and carbon emissions from traffic congestion are attempted to be incorporated into the Road User Cost (RUC) calculation. This paper also identifies and discusses major challenges that must be confronted when considering the mitigation of these emissions in contracting methods and procedures.
