Temperature Dependence of PCBs in Urban Area of Seoul City (서울 대기 중 PCBs의 온도 의존성)

  • To investigate the relationships between the atmospheric concentrations of PCBs and temperature, quantity of both parameters was performed at an urban site in Korea from July 1999 to January 2000. The strength of correlations between total PCB and temperature was found to be significant (r = 0.752, p < 0.001). It hence indicates that total PCB contents were affected sensitively by temperature change during the sampling period. The ratio of PCB homologs and Deca-CB(PCB 209) also behaved quite similarly to the change of temperature (r>0.60, p<0.05). This may be inferable with the progress of the gas/particle partitioning to the gas phase, especially for fri-and tetra-CBs. Because they have high vapor pressure, they generally exist in the gas phase. The Clausius-Clapeyron equation was applied to the atmospheric PCB data, relating PCB partial vapor pressure to inverse temperature. This may essentially represent the temperature-controlled transition between condensed phase and atmospheric gas phase. The slopes of the resulting plot with International Council for the Explanation of the Seas (ICES) congener ranged from -2810 to -5887, with significantly steep slope and $R^2$(p< 0.005) It was inferred that the PCB atmospheric concentration was also affected by change in the surrounding conditions such as soil, lakes and trees.

Uptake efficiencies of PCB 153 in fathead minnows through food chain of sediment-midge-fish

  • Uptake efficiencies of PCB 153 in fathead minnow through food chain of sediment-midge-fish were evaluated. Contaminated fish food, the midge Chironomus plumosus was prepared by exposing to sediments with PCB 153. We could harvest the midges with body PCB 153 levels of ∼ 1.0 mg/g and ∼ 10.0 mg/g, respectively, in 2 wk of exposure. PCB 153 level in fish fed with midge of 10.0 mg/g PCB 153 (high-dose group) reached its highest at 11.2 mg/g after 30 d of exposure. However, PCB level in fish fed with midge of 1.0 mg/g PCB 153 (low-dose group) kept increasing following first order rate kinetics until the end of exposure (38 d). When the fish food was changed to the uncontaminated ones, the fish body PCB levels were stabilized in ∼ 3 wk. The uptake efficiency in high-dose fish group was 37%, whereas low-dose group was 55%. Uptake efficiencies in fathead minnows were notably lower than that of pike (∼ 70%). This finding suggests that the uptake efficiency of this PCB congener may depend on the amount of the PCB in diet.

  • Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) are widespread, persistant, and highly toxic environmental pollutants. TCDD is the most potent congener among PCDDs and the most thoroughly investigated model compound of this class of chemicals. Concentration and Characteristic of PBDEs in Pine Needle and Soil of Ansung-city (안성 지역 소나무 잎과 토양 중 PBDEs의 농도 수준 및 특성)

  • Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in pine needles and soil samples from rural area were analyzed in this study. Concentrations of PBDE congeners were ranged between 0.2 and 3104 pg/g DW(dry weight) in pine needles and between 2.4 and 1997 pg/g DW in soil samples. The most abundant congener both in pine needles and soil samples was BDE-209, which was related to importation and production of deca-BDE technical mixtures in Korean industry. And BDE-99, BDE-47, BDE-100 deposited in pine needles and soil samples were closely matched with the major constituents of the penta-BDE technical mixture. Those can be interpreted as an evidence that transfer of the congeners in deca-BDE and penta-BDE technical mixtures from source to pine needle and soil occurs with broadly similar efficiency. Correlation coefficient(r) of PBDE congeners deposited in pine needles and soil samples is very significant because it implies th at there has been little weathering/degradation/alteration of the congeners generated from sources during atmospheric transport or within pine needles and soil themselves.

  • Polyurethane foam-disk passive air samplers (PAS) were deployed in a southern area of Korea for three months. The target compounds were 12 coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The congener profiles measured in this study were the same as those in ambient air and emission gas from the incinerator. A gradient of the total PCBs in different regions (industrial>residential>rural) was observed, suggesting the industrial complex may be an important source of coplanar PCBs. In general, only gas-phase compounds are mainly sequestrated by PAS. In order to estimate the concentration of particle-phase PCBs, a gas/particle partition model was used. A combined result (gas+particle-phase PCBs) was compared with previous results, indicating that the level of coplanar PCBs in our study area is comparable to those in other urban sites in the world. The validation of this method for estimating the total concentration is required through additional backup studies.

  • A new species of the genus Farranula Wilson, 1942 (Cyclopoida, Corycaeidae) is described based on both sexes collected off Chuuk Island in Micronesia (West Central Pacific). The new species F. dahlae differs from its close congener F. gibbula (Giesbrecht, 1891) in the following combination of characters in both sexes: body length is longer, length to width ratio of caudal rami is larger, basal element of maxilliped is distinctly longer, and terminal spine to distal segment ratio of P4 is smaller; while in females, lateral margins of fourth pedigerous somite are extended to mid-region of second urosomal somite, maximum width of the second urosomal somite is located at middle region in dorsal and lateral views, and length ratio of caudal seta III to seta V is much larger; and in males, sharply contracted portion of second somite is located at two-thirds distance from anterior margin. Some additional morphological details of F. gibbula are given and a key to species of the genus Farranula is provided.

The Distributions of PCBs in Inchon Coastal Sediments (인천연안 퇴적물 중 PCB의 분포)

  • The residue levels of total PCBs in the surface samples were detected low concentration compared to the coastal area in Korea, and the PCBs pattern were very similarly to the arochlor mixture(1016+1232+1248+1260). The selected area divided into three area(Kanghwa:A, Yellow:B and Jangdo:C) by depending on the chlorine ratio. The PCBs were mainly detected dichlorinated and trichlorinated biphenyls in far sea, and heptachlorinated and octachlorinated biphenyls in the near the Incheon coastal area. The residue levels of PCBs were detected 0.72${\sim}$9.20 ng/g in the surface samples, 1.60~3.00 ng/g for Kanghwa and 0.34~9.20 ng/g for Jangdo in the core samples, and the PCBs concentration increased from bottom to top.

  • Cholesteryl p-[3-(2-chloroethyl_-3-nitrosoureido] phenylthioaccetate (2) was synthesized : an intermediate, p-[3(2-chloroethyl_-3-nitrosoureido] phenylthioacetic acid (1) is a congener of an antitumor chlorambucil which both the -CH$_{2}$CH$_{2}$-linkage and -N(CH$_{2}$CH$_{2}$Cl)$_{2}$ group of chlorambucil molecule is doubly modified into the respective -S-linkage and -NH-CO-NNO-CH$_{2}$CH$_{2}$CL group. The attackment of cholesterol moiety as a carrier group to p-[3-(2-chloroethyl-3nitrosoureido] phenylthioacetic acid was accomplished through the esterification of cholesterol with p-[3-(2-chloroethyl-3-nitrosoureido] phenylthioacetyl chloride which was obtained from the treatment of p-[3-(2-chloroethyl)-3-nitrosourei-do] phenylthioaceticacid with SOCL$_{2}$, p-[3-(2-chloroethyl)ureido]]-phenythioacetic acid was nitrosated with NaNO$_{2}$ IN 98-100% HCOOH to give exclusively p-[3-(2-chloroethyl_-3-nitrosoureido] phenylthioacetic acid.   • Monchenkocyclops gen. nov. was erected to accommodate M. changi sp. nov. from South Korea (type species), M. mirabdullayevi sp. nov. from Kazakhstan, M. biarticulatus (Monchenko, 1972) comb. nov. from Uzbekistan, and M. biwensis (Ishida, 2005) comb. nov. from Japan. The latter species was originally described from surface-water habitats of the ancient Lake Biwa in the genus Diacyclops Kiefer, 1927, while two Central Asian species were previously collected from groundwater habitats and assigned to the genus Acanthocyclops Kiefer, 1927. Monchenkocyclops changi is also found in subterranean waters, and described here in detail. It is morphologically most similar to its Uzbek congener (not to the Japanese one), which rises some interesting zoogeographical questions about the disjunct distribution of this genus. Range fragmentation is a more plausible explanation for this distribution pattern than range expansion, and we emphasize four lines of evidence that support this hypothesis. Four species of Monchenkocyclops share not only the same segmentation of the swimming legs, but also the exact same armature formula of all swimming legs, in addition to many other morphological characters, such as the caudal rami shape and armature, absence of exopod on the antenna, similar shape of the seminal receptacle, fifth leg, etc. They can be distinguished mostly by the relative length of different armature elements, such as the innermost terminal caudal setae, and inner setae and apical spines on the third endopodal segment of the fourth leg. A dichotomous key to species is provided.

Bioaccumulation of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) and Organochlorine Pesticides in Manila Clams (Ruditapes philippinarum) Collected from the Mid-western Coast of Korea

  • Bioaccumulation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides was studied in sediment dwelling bivalves, Manila clams (Ruditapes philippinarum), collected from the midwestern coast of Korea. As witnessed by the dominance of tetra- to penta-chlorinated congeners in sediments and the penta- to hexa-chlorinated congener dominance in clams, the profile of PCBs in the sediments and Manila clams differed. Lipid and organic carbon-normalized biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) were determined for organochlorine pesticides. BSAFs of $\beta$-hexachlorocyclohexane ($\beta$-HCH) and $\Sigma$DDTs were in the range of 0.06~1.36 and 0.31~1.06. No clear relationships were found between BSAFs of $\Sigma$DDTs in Manila clams and the concentrations of DDTs in the associated sediment. The accumulated PCBs and organochlorine pesticides were compared in Manila clams and oysters (Crassostrea gigas) collected from 3 sites. Highly chlorinated PCBs were more commonly found in oyster tissues than in clam tissues. The reasons for the different accumulation pattern of organic pollutants in the two organisms are discussed.
