  • Pancreatic cystic lesions (PCLs) have increased in prevalence due to the increased usage and advancements in cross-sectional abdominal imaging. Current diagnostic techniques cannot distinguish between PCLs requiring surgery, close surveillance, or expectant management. This has increased the morbidity and healthcare costs from inappropriately aggressive and conservative management strategies. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) needle-based confocal laser endomicroscopy (nCLE) allows for microscopic examination and delineation of the surface epithelium of PCLs. Landmark studies have identified characteristics distinguishing various types of PCLs, confirmed the high diagnostic yield of EUS-nCLE (especially for PCLs with an equivocal diagnosis), and shown that EUS-nCLE helps to change management and reduce healthcare costs. Refining procedure technique and reducing procedure length have improved the safety of EUS-nCLE. The utilization of artificial intelligence and its combination with other EUS-based advanced diagnostic techniques would further improve the results of EUS-based PCL diagnosis. A structured training program and device improvements to allow more complete mapping of the pancreas cyst epithelium will be crucial for the widespread adoption of this promising technology.

  • In neuroscientific research, image segmentation is one of the most important processes. The morphology of axons plays an important role for researchers seeking to understand axonal functions and connectivity. In this study, we evaluated the level set segmentation method for neuronal axons in a Brainbow confocal microscopy image. We first obtained a reconstructed image on an x-z plane. Then, for preprocessing, we also applied two methods: anisotropic diffusion filtering and bilateral filtering. Finally, we performed image segmentation using the level set method with three different approaches. The accuracy of segmentation for each case was evaluated in diverse ways. In our experiment, the combination of bilateral filtering with the level set method provided the best result. Consequently, we confirmed reasonable results with our approach; we believe that our method has great potential if successfully combined with other research findings.

  • A new Rockwell hardness (HRC) model using a volumetric parameter by a least square and fractal interpolation method is suggested. The results are also investigated in comparison to real measured hardness data. For this purpose, the measurement of an indented volume is performed using a confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM), and the captured height encoded image (HEI) is used as an original surface for the calculation of the indented volume. After configuring the surface, the constructed volume is calculated and used as an independent variable for HRC hardness modeling. The hardness model is established using an experimental modeling technique involving a least square algorithm and fractal interpolating model, and this suggested model can be used to reliably predict the Rockwell hardness. These techniques can also be applied to the modeling of the Brinnell and Vickers hardnesses using a volumetric variable.

  • This study was to quantify fiber distributions in thickness direction of kenaf handsheets as a fiber distribution index (FDI) and to analyze the relationship between FDI and the handsheet properties. The images of fiber distribution in z-direction were obtained by Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope (CLSM) and analyzed by image analysis technique. The proposed FDI had a good correlation with high R2 vlaues with various properties of paper, such as apparent density, scattering coefficient , burst index, tear index, tensile index, and folding endurance. The proposed FDI was shown as a good index to quantify paper properties.

  • Confocal scanning microscopy (CSM) is an important instrument in a wide variety of imaging applications because of its ability to provide three-dimensional images of thick, volume specimens. The mechanism for two-dimensional beam scanning and optical sectioning has an important roe in CSM as the three-dimensional profiler. This optical sectioning property arises from the use of a point detector, which serves to attenuate the signals from out-of-focus. The intensity profile for the open loop scanning should be matched with its response for the standard. The non-linearity can be minimized with the optical sectioning or the optical probe of the closed loop control. This paper shows the mathematical expression of the light such as the extinction curve in the optical fields of system using AO deflector, the axial/lateral response experimentally when the error sources change, and the methods of optical sectioning. Thorough design of optical sectioner is crucial to the success of CSM in the field ...

  • The indented geometry for rockwell hardness indenter has been configured by using Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM). For this purpose, the CLSM can be well suited to construct the three-dimensional indented volume from the indented surface by rockwell hardness tester. Furthermore, the height data of HEI(height encoded image) by CLSM must be acquired at first and converted to indented surface later. And the indented surface patterns enable us to predict the indenter shape and volume. This volume can be used to study the rockwell hardness model as a volume parameter. As a result, the technique performed in this study by combining the CLSM with compensation technique is an excellent one to obtain the geometries of indented surfaces over a wide range of surface resolution in a micro scale. And it can be used for micro volume calculation.
