  • The main objective of this investigation is to study size effect on compressive strength of CFRP confined concrete cylinders subjected to axial compressive loading. In total 24 concrete cylinders with different sizes were tested, small specimens with a diameter of 100 mm and a height of 200 mm, medium specimens with a diameter of 200 mm and a height of 400 mm, and big specimens with a diameter of 300 mm and a height of 600 mm. The lateral confining pressure of each specimen is the same and from that hypothesis the small specimens were confined with one layer of CFRP, medium and big specimens were performed by two and three layers of CFRP respectively. Test results indicate a significant enhancement in compressive strength for all confined specimens, and moreover, the compressive strengths of small and medium specimens are almost the same while a bit lower for big specimens. These results permit to conclude that there is no size effect on compressive strength of confined specimens regardless of cylinder dimension.

  • For analyze of the bearing capacity, skin friction and settlements of pile on axial compressive loading, both Load transfer tests of pile and pile loading test in field have application to commonly before pile installing. A bearing capacity of pile was affected by the characteristics of surrounding ground of pile. Especially, that is very different because of evaluation of settlement due to each soil conditions of ground depths. The ground characteristics using evaluation of bearing capacity of pile through load transfer analysis depends on N values of SPT, and then a bearing capacity of pile installed soft ground and refilled area may be difficult to rational evaluation. An evaluation of bearing capacity on pile applied axial compressive loading was effected by strength of ground installed pile, unconfined compressive strength at pile tip, pile diameter, rough of excavated surface, confining pressure and deformation modules of rock etc and these are commonly including the unreliability due to slime occurred excavation works. Load transfer characteristics considered ground conditions take charge of load transfer of large diameter pile was investigated through case study applied load transfer tests. To these, matrix analytical technique of load transfer using finite differential equation developed and compared with the results of pile load test.

  • In order to utilize mass of oyster shells for a partial substitute material for reclamation, the shear characteristics of two-phase mixture soil with oyster shells were investigated with $\overline{CU}$ test. From various experiments, it was found that the increase of mixed ratio of oyster shells causes the shear strength of mixed soil. And this phenomenon not only depends on friction due to confining pressure such as pure clay but also is influenced by shaping skeleton of oyster shells. Also, it was discovered that there were many influences by clay-oyster shell mixture from the study of the secant modulus and dilatancy characteristics of mixed soil. In addition, variation of oyster shell skeleton during shearing stage is examined applying modifying coefficient concept.

  • In the present study, a Finite Element Model has been developed and used to study the effect of diameter to wall thickness ratio (D/t) of steel tube filled with concrete under axial loading on its behavior and load carrying capacity. The model is verified by comparing its findings with available experimental results. Influence of thickness and area of steel tube on strength, ductility, confinement and failure mode shapes has been studied. Strength enhancement factors, load factor, confinement contribution, percentage of steel and ductility index are defined and introduced for the assessment. A parametric study by varying length and thickness of tube has been carried out. Diameter of tube kept constant and equals to 140 mm while thickness has been varied between 1 mm and 6 mm. Equations were developed to find out the ultimate load and confined concrete strength of concrete. Variation of lateral confining pressure along the length of concrete cylinder was obtained and found that it varies along the length. The increase in length of tubes has a minimal effect on strength of tube but it affects the failure mode shapes. The findings indicate that optimum use of materials can be achieved by deciding the thickness of steel tube. A better ductility index can be obtained with the use of higher thickness of tube.

  • Cementation phenomenon has a huge influence on geotechnical stiffness and strength under low confining pressure. The goal of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of stiffness according to the depth. The piezo disk elements are installed at each layer of the cell for the detection of the compressional waves. The change of compressional wave velocity is classified by three stages. The compressional wave velocities are shown different according to the depth. The compressional wave velocity is especially influenced by cementation, effective stress, and coordinate number. Furthermore, the electrical conductivity and cone tip resistance are measured according to the depth. The electrical conductivity and the cone tip resistance show the similar trend with the compressional wave velocity. This study shows that the cementation by salt is affected by the depth on the granular materials.

  • This paper presents the details of indigenous development of the piezovibrocone and calibration chamber. The developed cone has a cylindrical friction sleeve of $150cm^2$ surface area, capped with a $60^{\circ}$ apex angle conical tip of $15cm^2$ cross sectional area. It has a hydraulic shaker, coupled to the cone penetrometer with a linear displacement unit. The hydraulic shaker can produce cyclic load in different types of wave forms (sine, Hover sine, triangular, rectangular and external wave) at a range of frequency 1-10 Hz with maximum amplitude of 10 cm. The piezovibrocone can be driven at the standard rate of 2 cm/sec using a loading unit of 10 ton capacity. The calibration chamber is of size $2m{\times}2m{\times}2m$. The sides of the chamber and the top as well as the bottom portions are rigid. It has a provision to apply confining pressure (to a maximum value of $4kg/cm^2$) through the flexible rubber membrane inlined with the side walls of the calibration chamber. The preliminary static as well as dynamic cone penetration tests have been done sand in the calibration chamber. From the experimental results, an attempt has been made to classify the soil based on friction ratio ($f_R$) and the cone tip resistance ($q_c$).

  • This paper deepens the finite element modeling (FEM) method to reproduce the compressive behavior of partially steel-jacketed (PSJ) RC columns by means of the Concrete Damaged Plasticity (CDP) Model available in ABAQUS software. Although the efficiency of the CDP model is widely proven for reinforced concrete columns at low confining pressure, when the confinement level becomes high the standard plasticity parameters may not be suitable to obtain reliable results. This paper deals with these limitations and presents an analytically based strategy to fix the parameters of the Concrete Damaged Plasticity (CDP) model. Focusing on a realistic prediction of load-bearing capacity of PSJ RC columns subjected to monotonic compressive loads, a new strain hardening/softening function is developed for confined concrete coupled with the evaluation of the dilation angle including effects of confinement. Moreover, a simplified efficient modeling approach is proposed to take into account also the response of the steel angle in compression. The prediction accuracy from the current model is compared with that of existing experimental data obtained from a wide range of mechanical confinement ratio.

  • The coupled hydro-mechanical loading conditions commonly occur in the geothermal and petroleum engineering projects, which is significantly important influence on the stability of rock masses. In this article, the influence of flaw inclination angle of fracture behaviors in rock-like materials subjected to both mechanical loads and internal hydraulic pressures is experimentally studied using the 3-D X-ray computed tomography combined with 3-D reconstruction techniques. Triaxial compression experiments under confining pressure of 8.0 MPa are first conducted for intact rock-like specimens using a rock mechanics testing system. Four pre-flawed rock-like specimens containing a single open flaw with different inclination angle under the coupled hydro-mechanical loading conditions are carried out. Then, the broken pre-flawed rock-like specimens are analyzed using a 3-D X-ray computed tomography (CT) scanning system. Subsequently, the internal damage behaviors of failed pre-flawed rock-like specimens are evaluated by the 3-D reconstruction techniques, according to the horizontal and vertical cross-sectional CT images. The present experimental does not only focus on the mechanical responses, but also pays attentions to the internal fracture characteristics of rock-like materials under the coupled hydro-mechanical loading conditions. The conclusion remarks are significant for predicting the rock instability in geothermal and unconventional petroleum engineering.

  • To evaluate the characteristics of permeability in weathered residual soil, flexible wall permeameter tests are performed using undisturbed samples. The Influence of hydraulic gradient and confining pressure on the permeability of weathered residual soil is analyzed. To compare the characteristics of permeability between weathered soil and sand, similar tests are performed using Jumoonjin sand. Also, piping model tests are performed to investigate the piping resistance of weathered residual soil. As a result, weathered residual soil shows very dependable permeability on hydraulic gradient and very large resisting ability against piping compared with sand.
