  • The confined concrete subjected multi-axil stresses have been known as the strength of concrete increases significantly. Many researchers have studied in confining effect of concrete, and now are studying in many fields. Lap splices were located in the plastic hinge region of most bridge piers that were constructed before the adoption of the seismic design provision of Korea Highway Design Specification on 1992. But sudden brittle failure of lap splices may occur under loading. This study introduces a new method to retrofit RC bridge columns with lap splice which do not have enough ductility during an earthquake. The new method use mechanical external pressure and steel plates around RC columns. The jacketing built following the new method shows good results of increasing the compressive strength and ductility of concrete cylinders. The thicker steel jacket shows larger compressive strength, however, the ductility at failure depends on the welding quality of steel jackets. In this study, The effect of the new method is verified through comparing the results of the compressive tests and analysis results.

  • This study introduced a new method to retrofit RC columns with lap splice that do not have enough ductility during an earthquake. The new method used mechanical external pressure and split steel plates around the RC columns. The introduced method does not require grouting the gap between jacket and concrete surface. In this study, 45 concrete cylinders were manufactured with varyingstrengths and part of them was retrofitted with split steel jackets under a lateral confining stress. The effect of the new method was verified by comparing the results from the compressive tests of retrofitted and unretrofitted cylinders. The steel jacket that was built following the new method showed good results of increasing the compressive strength and ductility of concrete cylinders. The thicker steel jackets showed larger compressive strength, however, the ductility at failure depends on their welding quality.

  • Adopting a rational engineering methodology for building structures on sandy-clay soil layers has become increasingly important since it is crucial when structures erected on them often face seismic and cyclic wave loads. Such loads can cause a reduction in the stiffness, strength, and stability of the structure, particularly under un-drained conditions. Hence, this study aims to investigate how the dynamic properties of sand-clay mixtures are affected by loading frequency and clay content. Cyclic triaxial tests were performed on a total of 36 samples, comprising pure sand with a relative density of 60% and sand with varying percentages of clay. The tests were conducted under confining pressures of 50 and 100 kPa, and the samples' dynamic behavior was analyzed at loading frequencies of 0.1, 1, and 4 Hz. The findings indicate that an increase in confining pressure leads to greater inter-particle interaction and a reduced void ratio, which results in an increase in the soil's shear modulus. An increase in the shear strength and confinement of the samples led to a decrease in energy dissipation and damping ratio. Changes in loading frequency showed that as the frequency increased, the damping ratio decreased, and the strength of the samples increased. Increasing the loading frequency not only reflects changes in frequency but also reduces the relative permeability and enhances the resistance of samples. An analysis of the dynamic properties of sand and sand-clay mixtures indicates that the introduction of clay to a sand sample reduces the shear modulus and permeability properties.

  • This paper investigates experimentally the confining effect, strengthening capacity and rebound rate of sprayed Fiber-Reinforced-Polymer (SFRP). From the method, resin and chopped fibers are sprayed separately from the nozzle with high pressure, and then they are attached to the concrete surface, so structure could be repaired. To evaluate the strengthening effect of sprayed FRP, cylindrical specimens and beam specimens were strengthening with SFRP. As main material of FRP, glass fiber and polyester resin are used. To investigate the optimum condition of sprayed FRP, the effects of fiber length, coating thickness, fiber volume ratio and concrete strength were examined. Capacities of sprayed FRP method were also compared to the FRP sheet method. In case of the sprayed FRP, rebound rate is important parameter considering economical efficiency and constructibility, so rebound rate of was discussed. From the test results, optimum conditions of sprayed FRP were determined. SFRP method showed superior strengthening capacities than FRP sheet method.

  • A transient pulse methos has been used to measure the permeability of Pocheon granite pre-heated from $25^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$ at effective pressure up to 32MPa. The permeability of whole rock ranged from 0.72 $\mu$d at 10MPa to 0.20 $\mu$d at 32MPa. The permeability of rock heated to $600^{\circ}C$ ranged from 18.07$\mu$d at 10MPa to 6.39$\mu$d at 32MPa. Confining pressure has greater effects on the rocks thermally treated to lower thermal-cycle temperatures than on the higher thermally treated rocks. The increase of permeability is most pronounced between 40$0^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$. Below 40$0^{\circ}C$, permeability increase is expected to be associated with the formation of new cracks and widening of preexisting cracks, whereas above 40$0^{\circ}C$, permeability increase is expected to reflect widening of cracks. Using the equivalent channel model, author shows that the exponent n in the relationship relating the permebility(k) to porosity($\phi$) by k∝$$\phi$^n$ falls in the range 2.7$\leq$n$\leq$3.0.

  • Based on the orthotropic hypoelasticity formulation, a constitutive material model of concrete taking account of triaxial stress state is presented. In this model, the ultimate strength surface of concrete in triaxial stress space is described by the Hsieh's four-parameter surface. On the other hand, the different ultimate strength surface of concrete in strain space is proposed in order to account for increasing ductility in high confinement pressure. Compressive ascending and descending behavior of concrete is considered. Concrete cracking behavior is considered as a smeared crack model, and after cracking, the tensile strain-softening behavior and the shear mechanism of cracked concrete are considered. The proposed constitutive model of concrete is compared with some results obtained from tests under the states of uniaxial, biaxial, and triaxial stresses. In triaxial compressive tests, the peak compressive stress from the predicted results agrees well with the experimental results, and ductility response under high confining pressure matches well the experimental result. The reinforcing bars embedded in concrete are considered as an isoparametric line element which could be easily incorporated into the isoparametric solid element of concrete, and the average stress - average strain relationship of the bar embedded in concrete is considered. From numerical examples for a reinforced concrete simple beam and a structural beam type member, the stress state of concrete in the vicinity of talc critical region is investigated.

  • To investigate the liquefaction potential of sands, a series of untrained cyclic triaxial compression tests is carried out on the samples of Ottawa, Joomoonjin, Hn river and Hongseung sands. The constitutive equations of sands are derived to explain the mechanical behavior of sands under cyclic stresses, and are applicable to liquefaction analysis. The following results are obtainded in this study. 1. Sands with the lower confining pressure or relative density are to be easily liquefied, and when the amplitude of cyclic stress are large, liquefaction takes places over only a few cycles. 2. Stress ratio, porewater pressure ratio and cyclic shear strains are to be good criteria to evaluate liquefaction potential of sands. 3. Hongseung sands which contains some silty clay shows higher dynamic properties than other sands. 4. The dynamic behaviors of undisturbed Hongseung sand are about same as those of dense sands. It is noted that undisturbed Hongseung sand shows higher liquefaction potential than the samples made by pluviation under same relative density, 5. The constitutive equations of soils under cyclic loads are developed based on the theory of elasto-plasticity, logarithmic stress-strain rela'tionship, non-associated flow rule and the concept of the boundary surface. The derived equations is applicable to predict the behavior of sands under cyclic loads and liquefaction potential with a higher accuracy. 6. Based on results of the study it may be concluded that cracks of the foundations and dislocation of the structures at Hongseung earthquakes(Oct. 7, 1978, Richter scald 5.2) are not brought by the liquefaction process.

  • A glow discharge atomic absorption system for the direct analysis of conducting solid samples has been designed and constructed. An arrestor made of machinable ceramic which is a main component for confining the discharge between cathode and anode is modified to have a better stability in discharge. Discharge voltage or current, shape of arrestor, pressure, and gas flow rate can be controlled by an ADC/DAC board with a personal computer. The effect of discharge parameters such as discharge voltage, pressure, and gas flow rate on the sample loss rate, absorbance, and the surface morphology of sample by SEM has been studied to find optimum discharge conditions.

  • Recently, the trend of research in hard coating is concentrate on developing the process of ionization rate under low operating pressure, to get the thin film with high adhesion and dense microstructures. In this study ionization rate enhancement type PVD process using permanent magnet is developed, which enhances the ionization rate by confining the plasma suppressing the wall loss of electron. By the result to investigate the characteristic of glow discharge, the ionization rate of this process is enhanced about twice as high as that of triod BARE process (about 26%), and more dense TiN microstructures are obtained in this process. Cylindrical ion energy analyzer is made and attached in front of a quadrupole mass filter for the analysis of the energy distribution of reactive gas and activated gas ions from the plasma zone. To analyze the operation mechanism of ion energy analyzer, computer simulation is performed by calculation the electric field environment using finite element method. By these analyses of ion energy distribution of outcoming ions from the plasma zone, it is found that magnetic field enhances ion kinetic energy as well as ionization rate. The other results of this study is that the foundation of feed-back system is constructed, which automatically control the partial pressure of reactive gas. In can be possible by recording the data of mass spectrum and ion energy analysis using A-D converter.

  • The purpose. in this study. is to analyze liquefaction potential of Inchon International Airport at the Area Phase ' I ' for Railway Construction of all, seismic response was analyzed using the computer program, Shake91. Four methods proposed by Seed & Idriss. Eurocode, Iwasaki & Tatsuoka. and Ishihara were used for assessment of liquefaction potential and safety factors calculated form these methods are compared. Based on the results of seismic response analysis, the maximum acceleration at the ground surface is larger than that evaluated site factor effect by using site factor because these areas are composed of very loose sand clay. Especially, in the case of analysis with long period earthquake data. it is appeared that the acceleration of earthquake is amplified more largely. Therefore, accurate seismic response analysis is suggested for the design on the important structures on reclaimed land. The analytical results of liquefaction potential show that the increments of N-value and effective overburden pressure with remediation make safety factors increase. Through comparing the safety factors evaluated from four method, the safety factor calculated by See & Idriss method in the lowest one and it is found that the SPT N-value effect the safety factor very largely. And, Iwasaki & Tatsuoka method is affected by various factors such as average grain size. fine contents, confining pressure. In conclusion. to minimize earthquake Risk by liquefaction, the efficient remediation is essential and seismic response analysis should be carride out.
