The development of fluorescence microscopy of single-molecule DNA in the last decade has fostered a bold jump in the understanding of polymer physics. With the recent advance of nanotechnology, devices with well-defined dimensions that are smaller than typical DNA molecules can be readily manufactured. The combination of these techniques has provided an unprecedented opportunity for researchers to examine confined polymer behavior, a topic far less understood than its counterpart. Here, we review the progress reported in recent studies that investigate confined polymer dynamics by means of single-molecule DNA experiments.
By applying a configurational-bias Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo algorithm, priority simulation results regarding the conformation of non-dilute polyelectrolytes in solvents are obtained. Solutions of freely-jointed chains are considered, and a new method termed strandwise configurational-bias sampling is developed so as to effectively overcome a difficulty on the transfer of polymer chains. The structure factors of polyelectrolytes in the bulk as well as in the confined space are estimated with variations of the polymer charge density.

Existing research on confined concrete filled steel tubular (CCFT) columns has been mainly focused on static or cyclic loading. In this paper, square section CCFT and CFT columns were tested under both static and impact loading, using a 10,000 kN capacity compression test machine and a drop weight testing equipment. Research parameters included bonded and unbonded fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) wraps, with carbon, basalt and glass FRPs (or CFRP, BFRP, and GFRP), respectively. Time history curves for impact force and steel strain observed are discussed in detail. Experimental results show that the failure modes of specimens under impact testing were characterized by local buckling of the steel tube and cracking at the corners, for both CCFT and CFT columns, similar to those under static loading. For both static and impact loading, the FRP wraps could improve the behavior and increase the loading capacity. To analyze the dynamic behavior of the composite columns, a finite element, FE, model was established in LS-DYNA. A simplified method that is compared favorably with test results is also proposed to predict the impact load capacity of square CCFT columns.
This paper is aiming to study the performances of reinforced high-strength concrete (HSC) short columns confined with aramid fibre-reinforced polymer (AFRP) sheets. An experimental program, which involved 45 confined columns and nine unconfined columns, was carried out in this study. All the columns were circular in cross section and tested under axial compressive load. The considered parameters included the concrete strength, amount of AFRP layers, and ratio of hoop reinforcements. Based on the experimental results, a prediction model for the axial stress-strain curves of the confined columns was proposed. It was observed from the experiment that there was a great increment in the compressive strength of the columns when the amount of AFRP layers increases, similar as the ultimate strain. However, these increments were reduced as the concrete strength increasing. Comparisons with other existing prediction models present that the proposed model can provide more accurate predictions.
This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on the compressive strength of small scale concentrically axially loaded fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) confined plain concrete columns, with cylinder concrete strength 19 MPa. For columns with circular (150-mm diameter) and square (150-mm side) cross sections wrapped with glass- and carbon-FRP sheets (GFRP and CFRP, respectively) applied with dry lay-up the effect of different jacket schemes and different overlap configurations on the confined characteristics is investigated. Test results indicate that the most cost effective jacket configuration among those tested is for one layer of CFRP, for both types of sections. In square sections the location of the lap length, either in the corner or along the side, does not seem to affect the confined performance. Furthermore, in circular sections, the presence of an extra wrap with FRP fibers parallel to the column's axis enhances the concrete strength proportionally to the axial rigidity of the FRP jacket. The recorded strains and the distributions of lateral confining pressures are discussed. Existing design equations are used to assess the lateral confining stresses and the confined concrete strength making use of the measured hoop strains.
The study of confined liquid crystals flourished in the decade of the nineties. Liquid crystals properties have been probed after confinement in well-defined or interconnected geometries as those available in porous media and in polymer networks. In this work we emphasized the power of the nuclear magnetic resonance technique to determine the confined liquid crystal structures. We also present unexpected results on the dependence of the confined liquid crystal configuration on the chain length.

Control of polymer conformations in heterogeneous confinement plays an important role in natural and engineering processes. We present a simulation study on the conformational structure and dynamics of a single, flexible polymer in a dense array of nanoposts with different sizes and separations, especially, when the volume of the interstitial space formed between four nanoposts is less than the size of the polymer chain. When a polymer is placed in the array of nanoposts, the size of polymer increases compared with that in the absence of nanoposts due to the confinement effect. It is shown that when a polymer is confined in the array of nanoposts the chain is elongated in the direction parallel to the nanoposts. As the interstitial volume between four nanoposts decreases either by increasing the nanopost diameter or by decreasing the separation between nanoposts, the chain elongation becomes more pronounced. On the contrary, the polymer size varies in a non-monotonic fashion, with an initial elongation followed by a chain contraction, as the interstitial volume is reduced both by increasing the nanopost diameter and decreasing the separation at the same time while keeping constant the width of the passageway between two nanoposts. The simulation analysis shows that the non-monotonic dependence of polymer size is determined by interplay between the chain alignment along the nanoposts in each interstitial volume and the chain spreading through passageways over several interstitial volume.

Simulations of solutions of flexible polymer molecules during flow in simple or complex confined geometries are performed. Concentrations from ultradilute up to near the overlap concentration are considered. As concentration increases, the hydrodynamic migration effects observed in dilute solution unidirectional flows (Couette flow, Poiseuille flow) become less prominent, virtually vanishing as the overlap concentration is approached. In a grooved channel geometry, the groove is almost completely depleted of polymer chains at high Weissenberg number in the dilute limit, but at finite concentration this depletion effect is dramatically reduced. Only upon inclusion of hydrodynamic interactions can these phenomena be properly captured.

The self-assembly of supramolecular dendrimers allows the rapid construction of nanosized structures with regularly ordered features that depend on the shape of the molecules and the relative strength of the intra-and intermolecular interactions. Here we report on a dramatic improvement in the degree of control and selectivity in the orientation of fan-shaped supramolecular molecules over a large area, which has been achieved by confined geometries and applied fields. The order and orientation of supramolecular dendrimers can be controlled by surface anchoring in confined geometries. POM, SEM, TEM, AFM and XRD results show that the molecules form the complicated defect-ordering in the microchannels with different feature sizes. We show that these defect domains are strongly influenced by the boundary and feature size of the surfaces. This technique can be used to create a grain size in the plane of the film that is much larger than that which can be achieved using previously reported soft-material based pattering.
