  • Electrically conductive mortar used in industrial carbon material byproducts was manufactured and analyzed in this study. The contents of the carbon material and mixed water were controlled, and the distance between electrodes was set to 0.42 m and 0.88 m. The carbon material was graphite with a layered structure. The carbon material was used as fine powder and aggregate substitutes according to particle size. The average particle sizes of each materials were 18.4㎛ and 546.1 ㎛ and the electrical conductivities were 62.3 S/m and 32.5 S/m, respectively. To maintain similar mortar flow in each sample, the water content was increased with increasing carbon material, and accordingly, the porosity showed an increasing trend. When electrode distance of the mortar (week 6) was 0.42 m, the voltage-current values were 342 V-1.48 A (S20) and 349 V-1.44 A (S30). For electrode distance of 0.88 m, these values were 513 V-0.98 A (S20) and 500 V-1.01 A (S30). The exothermic properties improved with increasing carbon material content and decreasing electrode distance.

  • In order to develope anti - static polyester resin which may be employed to dangerous circumstance with high organic vapor content, the effect of anti - static agents on the surface resistance and tensile strength of polyester resin were studied. Three organic anti - static agents and a conductive carbon black were adapted and used separately and together. The effects of anti - static agents, their contents, and synergic effect of anti - static agents were experimentally examined. Surface resistance and tensile strength of the polyester resin were decreased with the content of anti - static agents, and polyester resin with low surface resistance and relatively high tensile strength could be prepared by synergic effect of organic anti - static agent and carbon black.

  • The relationship between strain and applied potential was derived for composite actuators consisting of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and conductive polymers (CPs). During deriving the relationship, an electrochemical ionic approach is utilized to formulate the electromechanical actuation of the composite film actuator. This relationship can give us a direct understanding of the actuation of a nanoactuator. The results show that the well-aligned SWNTs composite actuator can give good actuation responses and high actuating forces available. The actuation is found to be affected by both SWNTs and CPs components and the actuation of SWNTs component has two kinds of influences on that of the CPs component: reinforcement at the positive voltage and abatement at the negative voltage. Optimizations of SWNTs-CPs composite actuator may be achieved by using well-aligned nanotubes as well as choosing suitable electrolyte and input voltage range.

  • We study the structural and functional characteristics of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures that are grown on carbon nanotube (CNT) constructs via step-wise chemical vapor deposition (CVD). First, we optimize the CVD process to directly grow ZnO nanostructures on CNTs by controlling the growth temperature below $600^{\circ}C$, where CNTs can be sustained in a ZnO-growing oxidative atmosphere. We then investigate how the morphology and areal density of ZnO nanostructures evolve depending on process parameters, such as pressure, temperature, and gas feeding composition, while focusing on the effect of underlying CNT topology on ZnO nucleation and growth. Because various types of ZnO nanostructures, including nanowires, nanorods, nanoplates, and polycrystalline nanocrystals, can be conformally formed on highly conductive CNT platforms, this electrically addressable three-dimensional hybrid nanoarchitecture may better meet a wide range of nanoelectronic application-specific needs.

  • The object of this study is to design the Radar Absorbing Structures (RAS) having sandwich structures in the X-band ($8.2{\sim}12.4GHz$) frequencies. Glass fabric/epoxy composites containing conductive carbon blacks and carbon fabric/epoxy composites were used for the face sheets. Polyurethane(PU) foams containing multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) were used for the core. Their permittivities in the X-band were measured using the transmission line technique. The reflection loss characteristics for multi-layered sandwich structures were calculated using the theory of transmission and reflection in a multi-layered medium. Three kinds of specimens were fabricated and their reflection losses in the X-band were measured using the free space technique. Experimental results were in good agreements with simulated ones in 10dB absorbing bandwidth.

  • Waterborne polyurethane dispersion (WPUD) was prepared from polycarbonate diol (PCD), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA) as starting materials. Then, waterborne acrylic polyurethane dispersion (AUD) was synthesized by reacting the WPUD with different types of acrylate monomers, such as methyl methacrylate (MMA), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and butyl acrylate (BA). Subsequently, the AUD was mixed with multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) to yield a conductive coating solution, and the mixture was coated on the polycarbonate substrate. The pencil hardness, abrasion resistance and chemical resistance of the coating films from AUD were improved than those from WPUD, while the electrical conductivity of the coating films from AUD was decreased than that of WPUD. Also, the effect of acrylate types on the properties of coating films was investigated. The AUD obtained from HEMA showed the strongest pencil hardness, while the AUD obtained from MMA exhibited the strongest abrasion resistance, chemical resistance and electrical conductivity among several types of acrylate monomers.

  • Hybrid nanomaterials consisting of multi-walled carbon nanotube(MWNT) and/or PEDOT of conductive polymer were prepared in this study. In the presence of catalyst and ligand, the MWNT-Br compound prepared by the successive surface treatment reaction was mixed with MMA to initiate the atom transfer radical polymerization process. PMMA was covalently linked to the surface of MWNT for the formation of MWNT/PMMA nanocomposites. The EDOT and oxidant were added in the aqueous emulsion of PS produced via a miniemulsion polymerization process and then it proceeded to carry out the oxidative chemical polymerization of EDOT for the preparation of PEDOT/PS nanoparticles with the core-shell structure. The aqueous dispersion of PEDOT:poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) was mixed with the silica particles treated with a silane compound and thus PEDOT:PSS-clad silica nanoparticles were prepared by the surface chemistry reaction. The hybrid nanomaterials were analyzed by using TEM, FE-SEM, TGA, EDX, UV, and FT-IR.

  • Polypropylene (PP) composites containing conductive multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) and stainless steel short fiber (SSF) were manufactured using a twin screw extruder and characterized their surface resistivity and mechanical properties in this work. Surface resistivity measurements showed that the percolation threshold appeared at a lower MWNT loading when a small amount of SSF was added to PP/MWNT composites. Tensile modulus and strength of the composites increased but elongation-at-break decreased greatly compared to pure PP. Also, the effects of MWNT and SSF on storage modulus and tan ${\delta}$ from dynamic mechanical analysis for the composites were examined, and the morphologies of fractured surface and the fillers were observed using a scanning electron microscope.

  • The new liquid crystalline (LC) epoxy was designed by substituting the phenylcyclohexyl (PCH) mesogen moiety with an alkyl chain at the 2,5 position of the diglycidyl terephthalate. The mesomorphic properties were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). All LC epoxy derivatives exhibited an enantiotropic smectic phase upon heating and cooling process. The LC phase temperature range was widened by mixing the eutectic mixture of LC epoxies. Interestingly, the cured LC epoxy exhibited the highest thermal conductivity of $0.4W{\cdot}m^{-1}{\cdot}K^{-1}$. The novel LC epoxy with high thermal conductivity might be used as a composite material for electronic and display devices.

  • Polystyrene/carbon nanotube (CNT) microcellular foams were prepared to have electrically conductive properties via high internal phase emulsion polymerization. In this study, we have investigated the effects of surface modification of CNT, surfactant content and dispersion time to improve the stability of emulsion and the electrical conductivity of foam. Acid treatment and a surfactant were used to effectively disperse CNTs in the aqueous phase. In the organic phase, CNTs were used after a surface modification with organic functional groups. The degree of dispersion of CNTs was estimated by the electrical conductivity of resultant microcellular foams. With raw CNTs dispersed with the surfactant in the aqueous phase, substantial conductivity increase was observed but the foams were slightly shrunk. The foams prepared with organically modified CNTs dispersed in the organic phase showed stable cell morphology without shrinkage, but displayed limitation to improve the conductivity.
