A new electrostatic separator has been developed for the removal of unburned carbon from fly ash. In this separator, a flowing film of fly ash is created on the surface of a vibrating electrode. Conducting particles such as unburned carbon acquire electrostatic charges and jump out of the flowing film so that they can be removed from the non-conducting fly ash particles moving forward. The new separator has been tested successfully using a pilot-scale test unit at 0.5 tons/hr capacity. Based on the successful test results, a larger unit is being constructed at the present time.

Properties of carbon nano fiber (CNF) as field emitters were described. Carbon nano fiber (CNF) of herringbone was prepared by thermal chemical vapor deposition(CVD). Field emitters mixed with organic binders, conductive materials and were prepared by screen-printing process. In order to increase field emissions, the surface treatment of rubbing & peel-off was applied to the printed CNF emitters on cathode electrode. The measurements of field emission properties were carried out by using a diode structure inline vacuum chamber. CNF of herringbone type showed good emission properties that a turn on field was as low as 2.1 $V/{\mu}m$ and current density was as large as 0.15 $mA/cm^2$ of 4.2 $V/{\mu}m$ with electric field. Through the results. we propose that CNFs are suitable for application of electron emitters in Field Emission Devices.
The network structure of Ni-coated carbon black (NCB) composites filled with phenolic resin was investigated by means of using scanning electron microscopy, viscosity, interfacial tension, shrinkability, Flory-Huggins interaction parameters, and swelling index. The electrical properties of the composites have been characterized by measurement of the specific conductivity as a function of temperature. Additionally, the variation of conductivity with temperature for the composites has been reported and analyzed in terms of the dilution volume fraction, relative volume expansion, and barrier heights energy. The thermal stability of phenolic-NCB composites has been also studied by means of the voltage cycle processes. The experimental data of EMI wave shielding were analyzed and compared with theoretical calculations. The mechanical properties such as tensile strength, tensile modulus, hardness and elongation at break (EB) of NCB-phenolic resin composites were also investigated.

The object of this study is to design the Radar Absorbing Structures (RAS) having sandwich structures in the X-band $(8.2\~12.4GHz)$ frequencies. Glass fabric/epoxy composites containing conductive carbon blacks and carbon fabric/epoxy composites were used for the face sheets. Polyurethane (PU) foams containing multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT) were used for the core. Their permittivities in the X-band were measured using the transmission line technique. The reflection loss characteristics for multi-layered sandwich structures were calculated using the theory of transmission and reflection in a multi-layered medium. Three kinds of specimens were fabricated and their reflection losses in the X-band were measured using the free space technique. Experimental results were in good agreements with simulated ones in 10dB absorbing bandwidth.
The commercialization of rechargeable metal-air batteries is extremely desirable but designing stable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts with non-noble metal still has faced challenges to replace platinum-based catalysts. The nonnoble metal catalysts for ORR were prepared to improve the catalytic performance and stability by the thermal decomposition of ZIF-8 with optimum cobalt loading. The porous carbon was obtained by the calcination of ZIF-8 and different loading amounts of Co nanoparticles were anchored onto porous carbon forming a Co/PC catalyst. Co/PC composite shows a significant increase in the ORR value of current and stability (500 h) due to the good electronic conductive PCN support and optimum cobalt metal loading. The significantly improved catalytic performance is ascribed to the chemical structure, synergistic effects, porous carbon networks, and rich active sites. This method develops a new pathway for a highly active and advantageous catalyst for electrochemical devices.

In this paper, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and micro glass bubbles (GBs) have been incorporated into a polyamide6 (PA6) matrix to impart thermoelectric properties. The spaces created in the matrix by GBs allows the formation of "segregated" CNT network. The tightly bound CNT network, if controlled properly, can serve as a conductive path for electron transport, while prohibiting phonon transport, which would provide an ideal configuration for thermoelectric applications. The CNTs and GBs were dispersed in a nylon-formic acid solution using horn sonication followed by coagulation in deionized water, and nanocomposite panels were fabricated using a hot press. The performance of nanocomposite panels was evaluated from thermal and electrical conductivities and Seebeck coefficient, and a thermoelectric figure of merit as high as 0.016 was achieved.

Conductive microcellular foams consisted of polystrene (PS) and polydopamine-coated carbon nanotube (PDA-CNT) were prepared via high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) polymerization and their morphology and electrical conductivity were investigated. CNT as a conductive nanofiller was modified to PDA-CNT by coating with hydrophilic PDA on the surface of CNT to increase aqueous phase dispersion and emulsion stability. It was possible to prepare the HIPEs having higher PDA-CNT content and the resultant foams having improved conductivity due to its good dispersion. The foams showed the morphology of interconnected cell structure. As PDA-CNT content increased, yield stress and storage modulus increased and cell size reduced. The PDA-CNT content showing electrical percolation threshold was ca. 0.58 wt% and the conductivity at PDA-CNT content of 5 wt% was increased to $10^{-3}S/m$.

This paper presents an experimental study on the piezoresistive behavior of nanocomposite strain sensors subjected to various loading modes and their capability to detect structural deformations and damages. The electrically conductive nanocomposites were fabricated in the form of a film using various types of thermoplastic polymers and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) at various loadings. In this study, the nanocomposite strain sensors were bonded to a substrate and subjected to tension, flexure, or compression. In tension and flexure, the resistivity change showed dependence on measurement direction, indicating that the sensors can be used for multi-directional strain sensing. In addition, the sensors exhibited a decreasing behavior in resistivity as the compressive load was applied, suggesting that they can be used for pressure sensing. This study demonstrates that the nanocomposite strain sensors can provide a pathway to affordable, effective, and versatile structural health monitoring.

Mechanical, electrical and thermal properties of polymer composites can be improved simultaneously by incorporating carbon fibers (CFs), which are beneficial for improving the mechanical properties, and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), which are advantageous for improving the conductive properties. In this study, MWCNTs were incorporated into carbon long fiber thermoplastic (CLFT), which has excellent mass production processability and excellent mechanical properties, to control electrical and thermal properties. The mechanical and electrical properties of the prepared composites were most significantly influenced by the amount of filler incorporated. On the other hand, the thermal properties were improved due to the formation of a filler network interconnected by the incorporation of MWCNTs. By adjusting the filler amount, filler composition, and filler network structure of MWCNT-incorporated CLFT, the mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties could be controlled.

Recently, flexibility is one of the hottest issues in the field of electronic devices. For flexible displays or solar cells, a development of transparent conductive electrodes (TCEs) with flexibility, bendability and foldability is an essential element. Hundreds of nanometers indium-tin-oxide (ITO) films have been widely used and commercialized as a transparent electrode, but their brittleness make them difficulty to apply flexible electronics. Many researchers have been studying for flexible TCEs such as a few layers of graphene sheets, carbon nanotube networks, conductive polymer films and combinations among them. Although gained flexibility, their transmittance and resistivity have not reached those of commercialized ITO films. Metal grids electrode cannot act as TCEs only, but they can be used to lower the resistance of TCEs with few losses of transmittance. However, the possibility of device shortage will be rise at the devices with metal grids because a surface flatness of TCEs may be deteriorated when metal grids are introduced using conventional methods. In our research, we have developed hybrid TCEs, which combined tens of nanometers ITO film and metal grids which are embedded in flexible substrate. They show $13{\Omega}$/${\Box}f$ sheet resistance with 94% of transmittance. Moreover, the sheet resistance was maintained up to 1 mm of bending radius. Also, we have verified that flexible organic light emitting diodes and organic solar cells with the TCEs showed similar performances compared to commercial ITO (on glass substrate) devices.
