  • The aim of this study is to analyze and improve the experiment of the acid-base neutralization reaction described in science textbooks. The problems in the neutralization reaction of NaOH-HCl solution were following; 1) the decoloration of phenolphthalein solution, 2) the color change of the titrated solution during condensation for the confirmation of the salt crystals, 3) the difficulty for the confirmation of the salt crystals. These problems are explained by the structure change of phenolphthalein and the improved experiment is proposed.

  • In Preparing $BaTiO_3$ powder under hydrothermal conditions, effects of reaction period feedstock concentration and mixing rate on crystallinity, mean size and size distribution of particles were studied. Experimental results showed that the particle size became smaller with its narrow distribution as the reaction period and mixing rate increased, but feedstock concentration decreased in contrast with the results based on the classical nucleation-growth model. From these results, $BaTiO_3$ particles seem to be prepared hydrothermally through a multiple reaction procedure that includes dissolution, precipitation, hydrolysis-condensation, aggregation, diffusion and transformation.

The present approach offers the advantages of clean reaction, simple methodology, short reaction time, easy purification, and economic availability of the catalyst.

  • Novel tri- and tetra-substituted pyrimido[4,5-d]pyridazines-2(1H,3H,7H)-ones have been synthesized via the regiospecific condensation reaction of hydrazine derivatives with 5-acetyl-4-aryloyl-6-methyl-3,4-dihydropyrimidinones in the presence of $SiO_2-Y(NO_3)_3$ as a green and recyclable catalyst under solvent-free conditions. All products were obtained in high yields and short reaction time. Employing this method is in accord with green chemistry principles.

  • Reaction of barbituric acid (BA), 1,3-dimethyl barbituric acid (DMBA) and 2-thiobarbituric acid (TBA) with cyanogen bromide and aldehydes in the presence of L-(+)-tartaric acid afforded a new route for the synthesis of stable heterocyclic 5-aryl-1H,1'H-spiro[furo[2,3-d]pyrimidine-6,5'-pyrimidine]2,2',4,4',6'(3H,3'H,5H)-pentaones which is a dimeric form of barbiturate (uracil and thiouracil derivative). In the reaction of 1,3-diethyl thiobarbituric acid (DETBA) the Knoevenagel condensation and then Michael adducts were obtained under the same condition. Structure elucidation is carried out by $^1H$ NMR, $^{13}C$ NMR, FT-IR and Mass analyses. Mechanism of the formation is discussed.

  • Poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN)/Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) copolymers were synthesized by two step reaction during the melt copolymerization process. The first step was the esterification reaction of dimethyl-2,6-naphthalenedicarbox-ylate (2,6-NDC) and ethylene glycol (EG). The second step was the condensation polymerization of bishydroxyethylnaphthalate (BHEN) and PEG. The copolymers contained 10 mol% of PEG units with different molecular weights. Structures and thermal properties of the copolymers were studied by using $^1{H-NMR}$, DSC, TGA, etc. Especially, while the intrinsic viscosities of PEN/PEG copolymers increased with increasing molecular weights of PEG, but the glass transition temperature, the cold crystallization temperature, and the weight loss temperature of the copolymers decreased with increasing molecular weights of PEG. Consequently, the hydrophilicities by means of contact angle measurement and moisture content of the copolymer films were found to be significantly improved with increasing molecular weights of PEG.

  • Amino alcohol-derived thiazolidinethiones [4-(S)-IPTT, 4(S)-ETT] serve as efficient chiral auxiliary in tin medicated aldol condensation. A highly enantioselective aldol-type reaction forming various ${\beta}$-hydroxy carbonyl compounds from 3-acetylthiazolidine-2-thione and achiral aldehyde is achieved via divalent tin enolate. The other advantages of these chiral auxiliaries were the ease of removal by methanolysis.

  • Benzylideneacetophenones are known as chalcones[1]. The chalcone has been known to be a photo-isomerizable and photo-dimerizable chromophore. The chalcone derivatives were prepared by base-catalyzed condensation of aldehydes and acetophenones, which were substituted with various alkyl chains. The synthesized chalcone was introduced into the t-BOC protected diamine through William synthesis reaction. Photocrosslinkable polyimide was prepared via one-step imidization reaction of DOCDA (5-(2,5-dioxotetrahydro furyl}-3-methyl-3-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboxylic anhydride) and the chalcone introduced diamine using isoquinoline (5 wt%) in m-cresol. The polyimide solutions were spin-coated onto the quartz, silicone wafer and glass substrates and the obtained thin films were irradiated obliquely with linearly polarized UV light.

  • Alkoxy modified silicone (PAMS) was synthesized from hydroxyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (OH-PDMS) and vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMO) under alkali catalyst (NaOH and KOH) at room temperature ($25^{\circ}C$) via condensation polymerization. Then, the structural verification of the synthesized PAMS was confirmed using $^1H$-NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy. The reaction rate of PAMSs was studied in terms of the concentration variation of alkali catalyst. The reaction rate increased with the concentration of alkali catalyst, but no correlation between conversion and concentration of alkali catalyst was observed.

  • Reaction of ethyl 4-chloro-2-phenylpyrimidine-4-carboxylate (4) with 5-chloro-2-methylthiophenol or 3-aryl-4-phenyl-1, 2, 4-triazole-5 thiol yielded the corresponding thioethers (5) and (8a, b), respectively. Careful alkaline hydrolysis of (5) yielded the corresponding carboxylic acid (6). Reaction of (4) with p-aminoacetophenone yielded compound (10) which was reacted with certain aromatic aldehyde to afford the$\alpha,\beta$-unsaturated ketones (11a-d). Condensation of (11a-d) with malononitrile or phenylhydrazine yielded the 2-amino-3-cyanopyridines (12a-f) or the 2-pyrazolines (13a, b) respectively. Seven representative compounds were tested for their in vitro antimicrobial activity against some pathogenic micro-organisms, some of them were proved to be active.
