Friction-based beam-to-column connection for low-damage RC frames with hybrid trussed beams

  • Hybrid Steel-Trussed Concrete Beam (HSTCB) is structural typology suitable for light industrialization. HSTCBs usually cover long span with small depths, which lead to significant amount of longitudinal rebars. The latter make beam-column joints more prone to damage due to earthquake-induced cyclic actions. This phenomenon can be avoided using friction-based BCCs. Friction devices at Beam-to-Column Connections (BCCs) have become promising solutions to reduce the damage experienced by structural members during severe earthquakes. Few solutions have been developed for cast-in-place Reinforced Concrete (RC) and steel-concrete composite Moment Resisting Frames (MRFs), because of the difficulty of designing cost-effective damage-proof connections. This paper proposes a friction-based BCC for RC MRFs made with HSTCBs. Firstly, the proposed connection is described, and its innovative characteristics are emphasized. Secondly, the design method of the connection is outlined. A detailed 3D FE model representative of a beam-column joint fitted with the proposed connection is developed. Several monotonic and cyclic analyses are performed, investigating different design moment values. Lastly, the numerical results are discussed, which demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed solution in preventing damage to RC members, and in ensuring satisfactory dissipative capacity.

  • This research is aimed at the development of the composite beam-column connection system by which the steel beam can be connected to the R/C column with smooth stress transfer. As the first step of the structural performance tests of the system, bearing resistance test has been carried out for actual size specimen. From the test, the connection system has been proved to take good bonding and stress transfer to the surrounding concrete with negligible relative displacements.

Influence of viscous phenomena on steel-concrete composite beams with normal or high performance slab

  • The aim of the paper is to present some results about the influence of rheological phenomena on steel-concrete composite beams. Both the cases of slab with normal and high performance concrete for one and two-span beams are analysed. A new finite element model that allows taking into account creep, shrinkage and cracking in tensile zones for concrete, along with non-linear behaviour of connection, steel beam and reinforcement, has been used. The main parameters that affect the response of the composite beam under the service load are highlighted. The influence of shrinkage on the slip over the supports is analysed, together with the cracking along the beam. At last, by performing a collapse analysis after a long-term analysis, the influence of rheological phenomena on the ductility demand of connection and reinforcement is analysed.

A Study on Verification Tests according to Connection Design Methods of Steel Plate Concrete Structures (강판 콘크리트 구조 접합부의 설계방식에 따른 검증실험 연구)

  • In this study, out-of-plane flexural test was performed to analyze behavior properties for a beam specimen which imitated a structure with connection member between reinforced concrete and steel plate concrete part. Tie bars between a upper and a lower steel plate, and tie wide flange shapes between upper and lower ribs were designed to prevent the steel plate or the ribs from breakaway in the connection of the specimen. As a result of the test, ductile failure behavior of the specimen and the functionality of the tie members were conformed as originally intended. Also, tension tests were performed to evaluate the design appropriateness of two specimens produced to anchor and connect mechanically #14 bars. The two test results showed that the anchorage connection system behaves in elastic limit during the main bars yielded, and the integrity of the designed system was verified.

Studies on restoring force model of concrete filled steel tubular laced column to composite box-beam connections

  • Mega composite structure systems have been widely used in high rise buildings in China. Compared to other structures, this type of composite structure systems has a larger cross-section with less weight. Concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) laced column to box-beam connections are gaining popularity, in particular for the mega composite structure system in high rise buildings. To enable a better understanding of the destruction characteristics and aseismic performance of these connections, three different connection types of specimens including single-limb bracing, cross bracing and diaphragms for core area of connections were tested under low cyclic and reciprocating loading. Hysteresis curves and skeleton curves were obtained from cyclic loading tests under axial loading. Based on these tested curves, a new trilinear hysteretic restoring force model considering rigidity degradation is proposed for CFST laced column to box-beam connections in a mega composite structure system, including a trilinear skeleton model based on calculation, law of stiffness degradation and hysteresis rules. The trilinear hysteretic restoring force model is compared with the experimental results. The experimental data shows that the new hysteretic restoring force model tallies with the test curves well and can be referenced for elastic-plastic seismic analysis of CFST laced column to composite box-beam connection in a mega composite structure system.

  • Green Frame is a column-beam system formed by composite precast concrete column and beam connected with steel buried in both members. During the installation of Green columns, the columns of Green Frame, covering 3 floors per each piece and beams, the eccentricity can be observed due to the construction error and the weight of beam itself. Such eccentricity may have a little influence on a single frame, yet, it can develop critical issues to the installation of subsequent beams or beams on the upper floors in the context of a building as a whole that has multiple frames. These issues lead to delay in frame installation, decrease of productivity and increase of cost, etc. Therefore, this study presents a steel-joint connection method in order to solve the issues. The steel-joint connection method exists on slope plane and reinforcing plate in steel frame buried in composite PC members. Through this method, the issues can be resolved without requiring additional equipment or manpower.

Test of extended thick-walled through-diaphragm connection to thick-walled CFT column

  • The strength and stiffness of the steel beams to concrete-filled tubular columns connections are significantly reduced if the thick-walled components are used. However, the thick-walled tubes used for columns can largely reduce the demand for space and increase the strength-to-weight ratio. This paper describes the cyclic performance of extended through-diaphragm connections between steel beams and thick-walled concrete-filled tubular columns improved with fillets around the diaphragm corners. Test on one full-scale connection was conducted to assess the seismic behavior of the connection in terms of strength, stiffness, ductility, deformation, energy dissipation, and strain distribution. It is shown that the fillets and extended through-diaphragm can alleviate the stress concentration in the connection and thus improve the seismic performance. The test results demonstrate that the through-diaphragm connections with thick-walled concrete-filled tubular columns can offer sufficient energy dissipation capacity and ductility appropriate for its potential application in seismic design.

  • This study is concerning the structural behavior of reinforced concrete filled tubular column to steel H-beam connections with outer diaphram by simplified connection type. The important parameters of this study are the cross-section shape of tubular column and the spacing of hoop (60mm, 30mm, 20mm) and the concrete filled or not. The experimental results are summarized for the strength and displacement of each specimen.

Experimental study on the hybrid shear connection using headed studs and steel plates

  • Although several types of rigid shear connectors have been developed particularly to increase load-carrying capacity, application is limited due to the complicated details of such connection. In this study, push-out tests were performed for specimens with hybrid shear connectors using headed studs and shear plates to identify the effects of each parameter on the structural performance of such shear connection. The test parameters included steel ratios of headed stud to shear plate, connection length, and embedded depth of shear plates. The peak strength and residual strength were estimated using various shear transfer mechanisms such as stud shear, concrete bearing, and shear friction. The hybrid shear connectors using shear plates and headed studs showed large load-carrying capacity and deformation capacity. The peak strength was predicted by the concrete bearing strength of the shear plates. The residual strength was sufficiently predicted by the stud shear strength of headed studs or by shear friction strength of dowel reinforcing bars. Further, the finite element analysis was performed to verify the shear transfer mechanism of the connection with hybrid shear connector.

An investigation of anchorage to the edge of steel plates bonded to RC structures

  • This paper presents the results of an experimental study investigating the effects of anchorage systems used in externally bonded steel plates on the strength and ductility of reinforced concrete structures. In the literature, diagonal steel plates bonded to frames were designed to be more flexible than the connections to eliminate the possible effect of the connection flexibility. However, to better evaluate the performance of the strengthened structures, the strength and behavior of connections should also be considered. The purpose of this study was to experimentally investigate the effects of different connection types of steel plates bonded to the frame using anchors on the strengthened RC structures. For this purpose, eleven specimens were designed to simulate the interior and exterior connection behavior. Two of these were used as the control beams and remaining nine for the investigation of the functionality of the end steel plates. Experimental results show that the load carrying capacity of the strengthened beams is directly related to the connection types of the steel plates. For the interior connections, L-shaped end plates that were strengthened using steel anchors must have adequate stiffness to prevent its shape. While, for the exterior connections, the connection with three anchors carried more load than the other exterior connections.
