Recent developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and computational intelligence have made it viable in the construction industry and structural analysis. This study usesthe Adaptive Network-based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) as a modelling tool to predict the strain in tie section for High Strength Self Compacting Concrete (HSSCC) deep beams. 3773 experimental data were collected. The input data andits corresponding strains in tie section as output data were recorded at all loading stages. Results from ANFIS are compared with the classical linear regression (LR). The comparison shows that the ANFIS's results are highly accurate, precise and satisfactory.
Nowadays, the pushover analysis technique is becoming a very useful tool for the prediction of inelastic behavior of structures in the seismic evaluation of existing buildings in the world. However, the reliability of this analysis method has not been fully checked by the test results. The objective of this study is to verify the correlation between the analytical and experimental response of a high-rise masonry infilled reinforced concrete frame using DRAIN-2DX program and the test results performed previously. This study concludes that the strength and stiffness of members can be predicted with quite high reliability while the ductility capacity of members can not be described reasonably.
In this paper, flexure behavior of steel fiber reinforcement ultra high performance cementations composites (SFR-UHPCC) has been analyzed by equivalent stress block. Pulling-out tensile force of steel fiber with concrete matrix was induced. An appropriate flexure evaluation formula, i.e. semi-analytical formula, was established based on rectangular cross section beam for comparing with shear capacity and ultimate load of SFR-UHPCC beam. Finally, the semi-analytical formula has been simplified for the convenience of design work. Experimental results and theoretical shear strength are shown to compare with the formula proposed by this paper. The theory formula has a good prediction of failure type of SFR-UHPCC.
This paper presents the structural behavior of CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced polymer) strengthened CFT (concrete-filled steel tubes) columns under axial loads. Circular and square specimens were selected to investigate the retrofitting effects of CFRP sheet on CFT columns. Test parameters are cross section of CFT, D/t (B/t) ratios, and the number of CFRP layers. The load and ductility capacities were evaluated for each specimen. Structural behavior comparisons of circular and rectangular section will be represented in the experimental result discussion section. Finally, ultimate load formula of CFRP strengthened CFT will be proposed to calculate the ultimate strength of CFRP strengthened circular CFT. The prediction values are in good agreement with the test results obtained in this study and in the literature.
In this paper, an analytical model is proposed to predict the shear strenth of RC beams strengthened by FRP. This predictional model is composed of two basic models-the upper bound theorem for shear failure (shear tension or shear compression criteria) and a truss model based on the lower bound theorem for diagonal tension creteria. Also, a simple flexural theory based on USD is used to explain flexural failure. The major cause of destruction of RC beams shear strengthened by FRP does not lie in FRP fracture but in the loss of load capacity incurred by rip-off failure of shear strengthening material. Since interfacial shear stree between base concrete and the FRP is a major variable in rip-off failure mode, it is carefully analyzed to derive the shear strengthening effect of FRP. The ultimate shear strength and failure mode of RC beams, using different strengthening methods, estimated in this predictional model is then compared with the result derived from destruction experiment of RC beams shear strengthened using FRP. To verify the accuracy and consistency of the analysis, the estimated results using the predictional model are compared with various other experimental results and data from previous publications. The result of this comparative analysis showed that the estimates from the predictional model are in consistency with the experimental results. Therefore, the proposed shear strength predictional model is found to predict with relative accuracy the shear strength and failure mode of RC beams shear strengthened by FRP regardless of strengthening method variable.
This study aims to develop a cost-based high-performance concrete (HPC) mix optimization system based on an integrated approach using artificial neural networks (ANNs) and genetic algorithms (GA). ANNs are used to predict the three main properties of HPC, namely workability, strength and durability, which are used to evaluate fitness and constraint violations in the GA process. Multilayer back-propagation neural networks are trained using the results obtained from experiments and previous research. The correlation between concrete components and its properties is established. GA is employed to arrive at an optimal mix proportion of HPC by minimizing its total cost. A system prototype, called High Performance Concrete Mix-Design System using Genetic Algorithm and Neural Networks (HPCGANN), was developed in MATLAB. The architecture of the proposed system consists of three main parts: 1) User interface; 2) ANNs prediction models software; and 3) GA engine software. The validation of the proposed system is carried out by comparing the results obtained from the system with the trial batches. The results indicate that the proposed system can be used to enable the design of HPC mix which corresponds to its required performance. Furthermore, the proposed system takes into account the influence of the fluctuating unit price of materials in order to achieve the lowest cost of concrete, which cannot be easily obtained by traditional methods or trial-and-error techniques.
The limited availability of raw materials and increasing service demands for pavements pose a unique challenge in terms of pavement design and concrete material selection. The self-compacting rubberized concrete (SCRC) can be used in pavement design. The SCRC pavement slab has advantages of excellent toughness, anti-fatigue and convenient construction. On the premise of satisfying the strength, the SCRC can increase the ductility of pavement slab. The aim of this investigation is proposing a new method to predict the crack growth and flexural capacity of large-scale SCRC slabs. The mechanical properties of SCRC are obtained from experiments on small-scale SCRC specimens. With the increasing of the specimen depth, the bearing capacity of SCRC beams decreases at the same initial crack-depth ratio. By constructing extended finite element method (XFEM) models, crack growth and flexural capacity of large-scale SCRC slabs with different fracture types and force conditions can be predicted. Considering the diversity of fracture types and force conditions of the concrete pavement slab, the corresponding test was used to verify the reliability of the prediction model. The crack growth and flexural capacity of SCRC slabs can be obtained from XFEM models. It is convenient to conduct the experiment and can save cost.
