  • Existing method protruding strands that are embedded in PHC pile to connect pile head and foundation slab shows poor constructibility. As this causes crack and damage in pile head and casualties often occurs in construction site during the work, alternative method called one-cutting method, in which pile above the ground surface and strands embedded in pile are completely cut and pile head is reinforced with rebar for connection with foundation slab, is currently adopted. However, the capacity of details for these methods are not mechanically proved. In this study, in order to suggest proper details of reinforcement for one-cutting method, failures due to lack of shear resistance between infilled concrete and PHC pile are analyzed through experiments and embedded depth with infilled concrete inside PHC pile is suggested. Assuming that slip failure strength is 0.4MPa, which is obtained from experiment conservatively, to have rebar yielded before slip failure, minimum depth of infilled concrete for PHC 450 and PHC 500, need to be 600mm above, and for PHC 600, 1,000mm above.

  • The working load at pile is sometimes subjected to not only compression load but also lateral load and uplift forces. Pile foundation is essential and uplift load can be applied because of buoyancy, a typhoon, wind or seismic forces. This study was carried out to determine the uplift capacity of concrete pile foundation driven in clay. Pile was driven in clay, between pile and clay adhesion factor was estimated, and it is the mean value between the cast-in-situ-pile and steel pipe pile. When pile foundation is loaded for long time, creep behavior occurs. The behavior of creep is originated from the clay creep contacted with pile. The creep behavior of pile foundation embedded in clay is heavily depended on the thickness of clay around the pile shaft, pore water pressure in clay, and creep behavior of clay.

  • Pile load tests using Osterberg cells (O-cell) were conducted on cast-in-place concrete piles founded in oil sand fill and in situ oil sand at an industrial plant site in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. Interpreted pile test results show that very high pile shaft resistance (with the Bjerrum-Burland or Beta coefficient of 2.5-4.5) against oil sand could be mobilized at small relative displacements of 2-3% of shaft diameter. Finite element simulations based on linear elastic and elasto-plastic models for oil sand materials were used to analyze the pile load test measurements. Two constitutive models yield comparable top-down load versus pile head displacement curves, but very different behaviour in mobilization of pile shaft and end bearing resistances. The elasto-plastic model produces more consistent matching in both pile shaft and end bearing resistances whereas the linear elastic under- and over-predicts the shaft and end bearing resistances, respectively. The mobilization of high shaft resistance in oil sand under pile load is attributed to the very dense and interlocked structure of oil sand which results in high matrix stiffness, high friction angle, and high shear dilation.

  • Europe and US which have more restrictive regulations than Korea about the noise and vibration during construction are using Auger-cast Pile to reduce the problem relating with noise and vibration. However Auger-cast Pile has problems like difficult quality control and low bearing capacity. In Europe, Displacement in-situ concrete Pile has been used to sove that problems since 1990s, and Korea has performed the test construction in 1997 and it has been used as the real structural foundation since 1998. Test and real construction results verified that the allowable capacity of the pile(diameter = 410mm) is between 70 and 100ton. Though De Beer & Van Imps design method utilizing CPT result is used to calculate the bearing capacity of the Displacement in-situ Pile, Korea is dependant upon the SPT as the sounding test, so design method utilizing SPT result is necessary to promote the application of the pile. To find out reasonable design method using SPT result, rearing capacity of the pile constructed in sand and clay in Korea was calculated using Meyerhof, SPT-CPT translation method, Nordlund, Douglas and DM-7 method, and the calculation results were compared to the load test result. Analysis result shows that SPT-CPT translation method is more reliable than others and economical design can be possible because it considers efficiently the friction capacity of Displacement in-situ Pile.

  • The pile construction method is changing from the pile driving operation to the injected precast pile method. It is to prevent environmental damage and to minimize complaints caused by noise. Therefore, economic alternatives optimized for the injected precast pile method are required. In this study, the enhanced spun reinforced concrete piles manufactured by high strength materials were proposed. Experimental tests were conducted to evaluate their structural safety and nonlinear finite element analysis was performed to improve the reliability of experimental results. The experimental results and the analytical results were in good agreement with each other and the proposed enhanced spun reinforced concrete pile has better performance than that required by the design. However, the performance of the joint using the existing method used in the PHC pile was considered to be insufficient.

  • In this paper, the analysis of a numerical study of pile-soil interaction subjected to axial and lateral loads is presented. An analysis of the composite pile-soil system was performed using the finite difference (FD) software LPILE. Two three dimensional, finite element (FE) models of pile-soil interaction have been developed using Abaqus/Cae and SAP2000 to study the effect of lateral loading on pile embedded in clay. A lateral displacement of 2 cm was applied to the top of the pile, which is embedded into the concrete pile cap, while maintaining a zero slope in a guided fixation. A comparison between the bending moments and lateral displacements along the depth of the pile obtained from the FD solutions and FE was performed. A parametric study was conducted to study the effect of crucial design parameters such as the soil's modulus of elasticity, radius of the soil surrounding the pile in Abaqus/Cae, and the number of springs in SAP2000. A close correlation is found between the results obtained by the FE models and the FD solution. The results indicated that increasing the amount of clay surrounding the piles reduces the induced bending moments and lateral displacements in the piles and hence increases its capacity to resist lateral loading.

  • Feasibility studies of a reinforced concrete (RC) deep pile foundation system with the compressed air energy storage (CAES) technology were conducted in previous studies. However, those studies showed some technical limitations in its serviceability and durability performances. To overcome such drawbacks of the conventional RC energy pile system, various steel-concrete composite pile foundations are addressed in this study to be utilized as a dual functional system for an energy storage medium and load-resistant foundation. This study conducts finite element analyses to examine the applicability of various composite energy pile foundation systems considering the combined effects of structural loading, soil boundary forces, and internal air pressures induced by the thermos-dynamic cycle of compressed air. On this basis, it was clearly confirmed that the role of inner and outer tubes is essential in terms of reliable storage tank and better constructability of pile, respectively, and the steel tubes in the composite pile foundation can also ensure improved serviceability and durability performances compared to the conventional RC pile system.

  • Pretensioned spun high strength concrete (PHC) pile has to be quality-controlled and provided an adequate concrete cover to assure high load carrying capacity, impact resistance, economy, and durability. During spun pre-casting, the pile section is divided into several segregated layers such as laitance, paste, mortar, and concrete layers. Greater the thickness of segregated layers, more difficult it is to guarantee the capacity and the durability of PHC pile. The experimental study was performed to investigate the effects of centrifugal condition on the segregated layers of materials and the compressive strength of concrete for PHC pile. The considering factors in the test were centrifugal time and magnitude of centrifugal force. These factors have been found to have greater influence on the segregation than the concrete strength. The moderate centrifugal condition has to be considered to maintain quality assurance in the production of PHC pile, especially to provide the adequate concrete cover over its tendons.

  • The High Strength Concrete REsearch Team of the Dong-Ah Construction R&D Institute has achieved the preactical use of the PHC pile manufacture technique at the Dong-Ah Chang-dong PC Plant. Components of the high strength concrete are used high strength cement, admixtures(water reducing high range admixture, micro silion fume, fly ash, gypsum). The design strength required 800kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ was developed raging from 870kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ to 1010kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The new manufacture procedure of HPC pile which include placing, molding, steam curing is able to apply a current PC pile manufacture procedure easily without using the high pressure steam curing.
