Prediction of Corrosion Threshold Reached at Steel Reinforcement Embedded in Latex Modified Concrete with Mix Proportion Factor (배합변수에 따른 라텍스 개질 콘크리트 내에 정착된 보강철근의 부식개시시기 예측)

  • This study were predicted the corrosion threshold reached at steel reinforcement in latex modified concrete(LMC) which were applied the agricultural hydraulic concrete structures. Accelerated testing was accomplished to the evaluate the diffusion coefficient of LMC mix, and the time dependent constants of diffusion. Also, the average chloride diffusion coefficient was estimated. From the average chloride ion diffusion coefficient, the time which critical chloride contents at depth of reinforcement steel was estimated. Test results indicated that the corrosion threshold reached at reinforcement in LMC were effected on the mix proportion factor including cement contents, latex content, and water-cement ratio. Especially, the average chloride diffusion coefficient, the corrosion threshold reached at reinforcement in LMC were affected by the all mix proportion factor.

Development of mix design method for geopolymer concrete

  • This study proposes a mix design method for geopolymer concrete (GPC) using low calcium fly ash and alccofine, with the focus on achieving the required compressive strength and workability at heat and ambient curing. Key factors identified and nine mixes with varied fly ash content (350, 375 and $400kg/m^3$) and different molarity (8, 12 and 16M) of NaOH solutions were prepared. The cubes prepared were cured at different temperatures ($27^{\circ}C$, $60^{\circ}C$ and $90^{\circ}C$) and tested for its compressive strength after 3, 7 and 28 days of curing. Fly ash content has been considered as the direct measure of workability and strength. The suggested mix design approach has been verified with the help of the example and targets well the requirements of fresh and hardened concrete.

  • This paper presents a study on the selection of optimal mix proportions for producing lightweight pre-foam concrete as a substitute for Autoclaved Lightweight Concrete (ALC) without the accelerated curing. The study was conducted using a rapid hardening binder made from by-products of the steel industry as the primary raw material. The experimental results established the optimal mix proportions, which included retarder content, water/binder ratio, foam content, and fiber inclusion amount, for the production of lightweight foam concrete. The optimal mix proportion was determined to have a retarder content at the minimum amount required to secure the working time, W/B of 35%, a foam content limited to 65% or less, and a fiber inclusion amount of 0.05% or less.

  • The hardening of concrete after setting is accompanied with nonlinear temperature distribution caused by development of hydration heat of cement. Especially at early ages, this nonlinear distribution has a large influence on the tensile cracking. As a result, in order to predict the exact temperature distribution in concrete structures it is required to examine thermal properties of concrete. In this study, the coefficient of air convection for concrete mix of nuclear power plant, which presents thermal transfer between surface of concrete and air, was experimentally investigated with variables such as velocity of wind and types of form. The coefficient of air convection obtained from experiment increases with velocity of wind, and its dependance on wind velocity is varied with types of form. This tendency is due to a combined heat transfer system of conduction through form and convection to air. The coefficient of air convection for concrete mix of nuclear power plant obtained from this study was well agreed with the existing models.

  • Covering mortar as a filter for permeable polymer concrete is necessary for good permeability from filtration continuously. Therefore, this paper is intended as an evaluation of the mechanical properties and permeability of permeable polymer concrete covered with polymer mortar as a filter. An optimum permeable polymer concrete is selected in various mix proportions, and three different polymer mortars were cast immediately following on the casting of the base permeable polymer concrete. And they are tested for compressive and flexural strengths, adhesion in tension, hardening shrinkage and permeability . From the test results, binder and filler contents in mix proportions had a great influence on the permeability of polymer concretes. The mechanical properties of permeable polymer concretes covered with polymer mortars using crushed stone are superior to other filters, and hardening shrinkage is the smallest in filters. It is apparent that adhesion between the base permeable polymer concrete and polymer mortar is affected by the degree of hardening shrinkage. From this study, proper mix proportions can be recommended in the consideration of properties of the permeable polymer concrete.

  • Quality control of ready-mixed concrete is most important in the production step because, the performance of hardened concrete is revealed due to ready-mixed concrete. Hardened concrete has several properties physically. Above all things compressive strength of concrete has a greate effect in the design of structures, analysis, and durability. Compressive strength is simple predicted by w/c up to date, but there are some limits because different compressive strengths can be revealed in the same w/c. Therefore this study contributes to the quality control of ready-mixed concrete through statistical analysis for the relation between mix factors in mix design and compressive strength, predictable equation for compressive strength.

  • Lightweight concrete is known for its advantage of reducing the self-weight of the structures, reducing the areas of sectional members as well as making the construction convenient. Thus the construction cost can be saved when applied to structures such as long-span bridge and high rise buildings. However, the lightweight concrete requires specific mix design method that is quite different from the typical concrete, since using the typical mix method would give rise the material segregation as well as lower the strength by the reduced weight of the aggregate. In order to avoid such problems, it is recommended to apply the mix design method of self-compacting concrete for the lightweight concrete. Experimental tests were performed as such compressive strength, dry shrinkage and carbonation of high strength lightweight self-compacting concrete.

Optimum Mix Proportion of the High Strength and Self Compacting Concrete Used Above-Ground LNG Storage Tank (지상식 LNG 저장탱크용 고강도 자기충전 콘크리트의 최적배합에 관한 연구)

  • This study is to performed to find the optimum mix proportion of the high strength and self compacting concrete for the above-ground LNG storage tank construction and field application. If LNG storage tank wall thicknesscan be reduced, the construction cost and quality can be improved by using self-compacting high strength concrete with compressive strength 60~80 MPa. For this purpose, low heat cement (Type IV) and class F fly ash are used in concrete mix to control hydration heat, flowability, and viscosity. Mix design variables of unit water, fly ash replacement ratio, water-binder ratio, and fine aggregate ratio are selected and tested for material properties and manufacturing cost of the concrete. Also, fly ash replacement ratio is considered using confined water ratio test. The test results showed that the optimum mix proportion of the self-compacting high strength concrete characteristics are as follows. 1) In case of the concrete with specified compressive strength of 60 MPa, the optimum mix proportion is fly ash replacement ratio of 20% and water- binder ratio of 27~30%. 2) In case of the concrete with the strength of 80 MPa, the optimum mix proportion is fly ash replacement ratio of 10% and water-binder ratio 25%. But unit water and fine aggregate ratio are 165 $kg/m^3$ and $51{\pm}2%$, respectively, regardless of the traget concrete compressive strength range. Also, test results showed that concrete manufacturing cost of 60 MPa and 80 MPa concrete require additional costs of 14~22% and 33%, respectively, compared to the manufacturing cost of 40 MPa concrete. Therefore, application of the self-compacting high strength concrete has proven to be economical in the perspective of the material cost, quality control, and site management.

Sustainable concrete mix design for a target strength and service life

  • Considering the well known environmental issues of cement manufacturing (direct and indirect levels of $CO_2$ emissions), clinker replacement by supplementary cementing materials (SCM) can be a very promising first step in reducing considerably the associated emissions. However, such a reduction is possible up to a particular level of SCM utilization, influenced by the rate of its pozzolanic reaction. In this study a (4-step) structured methodology is proposed in order to be able to further adjust the concrete mix design of a particular SCM, in achieving additional reduction of the associated levels of $CO_2$ emissions and being at the same time accepted from a derived concrete strength and service life point of view. On this note, the aim of this study is twofold. To evaluate the environmental contribution of each concrete component and to provide the best possible mix design configuration, balanced between the principles of sustainability (low environmental cost) and durability (accepted concrete strength and service life ). It is shown that such a balance can be achieved, by utilising SCM by-products in the concrete mix, reducing in this way the fixed environmental emissions without compromising the long-term safety and durability of the structure.

An Experimental Study on the Improvement of Durability for the Foundation Concrete under Cold Weather Condition (혹한지역 기초 콘크리트의 내구성 향상을 위한 실험 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide the optimum mix design of cold weather concrete to be placed at the foundation structures in substation. The basic performance tests including slump and slump flow, air content, compressive strength and freezing & thawing resistance were conducted for cold weather concrete by varying with W/C ratios such as 40%, 50% and 60% and air contents such as 3%, 4%, 5% and 6%. The effect on durability of concrete corresponding to the increasing amount of air content and W/C ratio was evaluated and the optimum mix design was recommended. From this study, the concrete mix design containing 6% of air content and 45% of W/C ratio is recommended for the foundation concrete of substation.
