This paper presents the results of a series of tests carried out on hollow and concrete-filled coldformed steel sections subjected to axial and bending forces. The effects of eccentricity ratio and strength of in-fill on the behaviour of these sections were studied. A total of forty-eight medium sized columns and six beams were tested to failure. Extensive measurements of material properties, strains, axial shortening and lateral deflection were carried out. Interaction of local and overall buckling was observed in the tests. Failure mode observations were local buckling coupled with overall buckling. A description of the specially fabricated end fixtures for applying eccentric loading to the columns and to simulate pinned end condition is also presented. The experimental results of hollow columns are compared with the existing Indian, British and American codes of practice and the results of concrete-filled columns are compared with EC4 recommendations. It is seen that in the case of hollow columns predictions based on British and American codes of practice and in the case of concrete-filled columns predictions based on EC4 recommendations agree reasonably well with the experimental results. From the experiments it is seen that the provision of in-fill substantially increases the ultimate load carrying capacity of the order of one and a half to two times and the increase in strength of the in-filled concrete from a low grade concrete of compressive strength 24.94 MPa to a high grade concrete of compressive strength 33.26 MPa increases the ultimate load carrying capacity by one and a half times irrespective of the eccentricity of loading.
In this study, the suitability of CFGD(concrete faced gravefill dam) was investigated by examining the strength and deformation characteristics of a gravelfill material, a CFGD main fill material, and comparing them with those of several rockfill dam materials. The gravelfill material exhibited similar strength and deformation properties to those of the main fill materials of existing stable large rockfill dams. Since not only CFGD has environmental and economic advantages over CFRD, but its main fill material compares favorably with those of the existing stable CFRDs, CFGD may be the best choice when natural gravel materials are abundant in the vicinity of the dam construction location.
Field measurements were carried out in this study to investigate the behavior of cut and cover tunnel such as the distribution and the magnitude of the earth pressure during back fill process of the ground material. Three kinds of measuring instruments, such as the earth pressure load cell, the concrete strain gauge and the reinforcing bar meter of embedded type in concrete structure were installed and measured. Earth pressure load cells, installed after construction of the tunnel lining, measure the outside forces acting on the tunnel lining with radial directions. Three load cells were installed at the crown, the right and the left shoulder of the tunnel, respectively. Three sets of reinforcing bar meter were installed in the double reinforcements of the tunnel lining and their locations were the same with the position of the earth pressure load cells. Concrete strain gauge was installed only one site of the upper compressive part at the tunnel crown. Based on the measuring results in the field, the deformation and the earth pressure acting on the tunnel lining were investigated with the back fill process of the ground material. Considerations on the validity of the measuring results were paid. For the analysis of measurements, after dividing back fill process into three steps, various factors which affect on the behavior of tunnel lining were investigated at each step.
When surface Concrete Face Rock fill Dam constructs than existent center core type rock fill dam, it is much prevalent form in domestic these day by quality control of that is profitable and weather condition etc. of coreZone. C.F.R.D is less research about seismic survey(Refractional Seismic Prospectin, Resistivity Prospecting) of levee body than fill dam. Thus as C.F.R.D seismic survey is less, safety of that consist is short most development flue is high reason. That is not checking target of minuteness safety diagnosis and so on by short operation period. Wish to analyze inquiry incidental and difference with center core type dam and acquire C.F.R.D preservation administration upper necessary inquiry condition forward hereafter.
This paper is a report on the research of experimental model test of Andong Fill Dam, which has been planned by the Government of Korea as a project, of its over-flowing capacity in spillway, creation of minus pressure and structure of anti-water impulse in over-flow weir. Andong Fill Dam is one of the project of master development plant for water resources, locating at Nakdong River side of Korea, and is aimed to have a multi-purpose dam for flood-control, irrigation, water power, urban and industrial water supply. This dam is planned to erect in fill-dam type due to the improper soil foundation and condition for concrete dam. The refore for the proper and advantageous points, this is designed as center core fill dam. By a model minimized of Andong Fill Dam, held an experimental model test on water quentity of reservir, discharges of overflow part, low pressure and anti-water impulse of overflow part, which was conducted an experiment by flowing aspects through each section of spillway to find the changes of water pressure and that of water level, and corrected the section of each part in order to conduct a check on the creation of minus pressure not to be over acted to the allowable bundary of the section structure; and for the prevention of concentated scouring at the down stream side of flow.
This thesis studied effect of zoning on seepage flow in concrete faced gravel-fill dam (CFGD) designed to have selected main rockfill or gravel-fill zone, Zone 3Bs with higher permeability to enhance the safety against accidental water infiltration into the dam. For this purpose, centrifuge model tests with two cases, with and without Zone 3Bs, were performed in order to investigate the necessity and the function of Zone 3Bs. Model dams were made by soil samples with modified coefficients of permeability and concrete faced slab was simulated with aluminum alloy. Water infiltration was simulated by rising water table over cracks on the facing. Behaviors of model dams were measured by LVDTs, strain gages, pore water pressures and cameras. Form the results of centrifuge tests, it was found out that the Zone 3Bs acts as a protection of main gravel-fill zone by inducing flow paths for infiltrated water into it as well as by draining off the infiltrated water out of the dam in a short time.
The construction waste concrete produce from the demolished concrete structures. These waste concrete materials are useful and valuable for fill and subgrade and are considered to use as the subgrade material of the road. To use the subgrade of the road with the waste concrete, the several experiments involved with compaction test and laboratory C. B. R. etc. are performed. These experiments are compared with criteria of the road construction manual. It is shown that the quality of the construction waste concrete satisfies that of the subgrade mentioned in the road construction manual.
Recently, the use of composite steel plate concrete structural modules filled with concrete between steel plates of complex internal structure, in which a large amount of studs are installed, is increasing in order to reduce the weight and to increase workability of structures such as LNG storage tanks. However, in Korea, there is no systematic criterion for evaluating the construction performance of composite steel plate concrete structural modules. Therefore, in this study, we propose a filling guideline of concrete for composite steel plate structural module. For this purpose, high filling performance concrete with general strength range was formulated and tested for filling ability and permeability for each formulation. Rheology analysis was performed to quantitatively evaluate the flow characteristics of concrete. The reliability of $T_{500}$ and plastic viscosity was evaluated to reflect the results of each test, and a guideline for high filling concrete satisfying the reliability of 0.9 or more was derived by reflecting the results of the study on the relationship between the $T_{500}$ and plastic viscosity. Through final fill-box test, filling performance was verified and guidelines were suggested.
Earth and rock fill dam is our typical dam because of their inherent flexibility and adaptability to various fundation conditions. In order to secure structural safety, rockfill materials are used angular particles obtained by blasting parent rock or rounded particles collected from river beds. Concrete-faces rockfill dams(CFRD) and Concrete-faces gravelfill dams(CFGD) have become popular in the last 20 years as s result of their good performance and low cost compared with the rockfill dam. These Dams are also constructed by the materials. A key factor in the design of the dams is the deformations induced during construction and upon reservoir filling. These can be predicted using the stress-strain and strength properties can be adequately define. However the stress-strain properties of rockfill are difficult to determine because the properties are affected by such factors as particle grading, size and shape of particles, stress conditions, and particle crushing. In our study, testing of the behavior of the rockfill materials are essential prerequisites to the realistic analysis and design of the CFGD. This paper deals with laboratory testing of particle crushing among the study.
