A thermal stresses by heat of hydration was analyzed according to a change of a pour height in reactor containment building. In case of more than 3.6m pouring height a crack index by heat of hydration analysis resulted in less than 1 because there is not a construction joint of vertical direction and for a self-restraint effect of circumferential section shape. Therefore detailed consideration on a mixture proportion of binder type, quantity in concrete and selection of a form in seasonal air temperature is needed for a control of tensile stress by heat of hydration.

This paper reports the physical properties and hydration products of slag cement that was prepared by activating ground granulated blast furnace slag with commercial lime and plaster of Paris (POP) as activators. The consistency, setting times and soundness of various mixes of slag-lime-POP is reported. The hydration products and formation of bonds in the paste during setting were studied with the help of SEM, FTIR and XRD tests and the same are correlated to the hydration process. The setting times of the mixes are found to be lower than that of the value prescribed for ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Borax is used as a setting retarder and a borax content of 0.4 % by mass gives setting times that are normally prescribed for OPC. In the early stages of setting C-A-S-H gels are found in this cementing material instead of C-S-H gel, as generally observed in the OPC.

Carbonation is a natural ageing process for cement. This study focuses on how the carbonation rate varies with selected hydration times and atmospheric conditions during the early stages of reacting dried cement paste. Diffuse reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy is shown to be a suitable technique to monitor the formation of carbonates in cement. Combined with a previously developed freeze drying technique, carbonation can be studied at specific hydration stages. In ambient air both calcium hydroxide and calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) in cement are carbonated. Increased hydration time enhances the carbon dioxide uptake, which indicates that the calcium in the hydration products reacts more easily than the calcium in the clinker phase. In a humid $CO_2$ atmosphere, the carbonation process is so pronounced that it decomposes C-S-H into calcium carbonate and silica. In a moist $N_2$ atmosphere no carbonation occurs, but the sulfate chemistry of the cement seems to be affected due to the formation of ettringite.
This study was intended to examine the possibility of reducing hydration heat by FA substitution and combination of slag (CGS) from coal gasification power generation (IGCC) with mixed aggregate for concrete. The analysis results showed good results if liquidity increases as the ratio of CGS increases, air volume decreases, and compressive strength is mixed up to 25% in the residual aggregate. The results showed that the heat of hydration was reduced compared to plain due to the boron content of CGS as the CGS substitution rate increased, but it was larger due to the combination with FA substitution. It was found that the heat of hydration was reduced.
In domestic construction industry progress, construction and quality control of large structures are considered to be important as the superstructure and mass scale of structures. In the case of mass concrete, high hydration heat caused by cement hydration generates temperature stress by generating internal temperature difference with the concrete surface. These temperature stresses cause cracks to penetrate the concrete structure. A method of lowering the heat generation by incorporating Urea in order to reduce the concrete temperature crack has been proposed. In this study, the heat function coefficient for the FEM temperature crack analysis of the mass concrete containing the element was derived and the adiabatic temperature rise test was carried out according to the incorporation of the element. As a result of this experiment, the maximum temperature of 41 ± 1℃ was obtained irrespective of the amount of urea, and the maximum temperature decreased by 16.9℃ in concrete containing 40kg/㎥ of urea.
Over the past few decades, a considerable number of studies on the durability of concrete have been carried out extensively. A lot of improvements have been achieved especially in modeling of ionic flows. However, the majority of these researches have not dealt with the chloride binding isotherm based on the mechanism, although chloride binding capacity can significantly impact on the total service life of concrete under marine environment. The purpose of this study is to develop the model of chloride binding isotherm based on the individual mechanism. It is well known that chlorides ions in concrete can be present; free chlorides dissolved in the pore solution, chemical bound chlorides reacted with the hydration compounds of cement, and physical bound attracted to the surface of C-S-H grains. First, sub-model for water soluble chloride content is suggested as a function of pore solution and degree of saturation. Second, chemical model is suggested separately to estimate the response of binding capacity due to C-S-H and Friedel's salt. Finally, physical bound chloride content is estimated to consider a surface area of C-S-H nano-grains and the distance limited by the Van der Waals force. The new model of chloride binding isotherm suggested in this study is based on their intrinsic binding mechanisms and hydration reaction of concrete. Accordingly, it is possible to characterize chloride binding isotherm at the arbitrary stage of hydration time and arbitrary location from the surface of concrete. Comparative study with experimental data of published literature is accomplished to validity this model.
