  • This paper presents an integrated procedure to predict the temperature and moisture distributions in hardening concrete considering the effects of temperature and aging. The degree of hydration is employed as a fundamental parameter to evaluate hydro-thermal-mechanical properties of hardening concrete. The temperature history and temperature distribution in hardening concrete is evaluated by combining cement hydration model with three-dimensional finite element thermal analysis. On the other hand, the influences of both self-desiccation and moisture diffusion on variation of relative humidity are considered. The self-desiccation is evaluated by using a semi-empirical expression with desorption isotherm and degree of hydration. The moisture diffusivity is expressed as a function of degree of hydration and current relative humidity. The proposed procedure is verified with experimental results and can be used to evaluate the early-age crack of hardening concrete.

  • In marine and coastal environments, penetration of chloride ions is one of the main mechanisms causing concrete reinforcement corrosion. Currently, most of experimental investigations about submerged penetration of chloride ions are started after the four weeks standard curing of concrete. The further hydration of cement and reduction of chloride diffusivity during submerged penetration period are ignored. To overcome this weak point, this paper presents a numerical procedure to analyze simultaneously cement hydration reaction and chloride ion penetration process. First, using a cement hydration model, degree of hydration and phase volume fractions of hardening concrete are determined. Second, the dependences of chloride diffusivity and chloride binding capacity on age of concrete are clarified. Third, chloride profiles in hardening concrete are calculated. The proposed numerical procedure is verified by using chloride penetration test results of concrete with different mixing proportions.

  • In the design of reinforced concrete beams, it is a standard practice to use the yield stress of the steel reinforcement for the evaluation of the flexural strength. However, because of strain hardening, the tensile strength of the steel reinforcement is often substantially higher than the yield stress. Thus, it is a common belief that the actual flexural strength should be higher than the theoretical flexural strength evaluated with strain hardening ignored. The possible increase in flexural strength due to strain hardening is a two-edge sword. In some cases, it may be treated as strength reserve contributing to extra safety. In other cases, it could lead to greater shear demand causing brittle shear failure of the beam or unexpected greater capacity of the beam causing violation of the strong column-weak beam design philosophy. Strain hardening may also have certain effect on the flexural ductility. In this paper, the effects of strain hardening on the post-peak flexural behaviour, particularly the flexural strength and ductility, of reinforced normal- and high-strength concrete beams are studied. The results reveal that the effects of strain hardening could be quite significant when the tension steel ratio is relatively small.

  • This paper presents the experimental study on hardening process of high-strength and high-flowable concrete. The experiments were performed to investigate any unfavorable construction situations since the actual concrete placement has been scheduled in cold weather period, so that the high quality concrete construction is convinced to be successfully carried out. The tests were conducted using 600nm and 1000nm height of steel tube to simulate the practical concrete filled steel tube columns according to the following variables as: the categories of chemical admixtures, curing temperatures and curing schemes. The test results were analyzed in terms of hardening speed, internal heat of hydration and history of strength gain. This paper emphasizes the importance of curing schemes on durability and the use of hardening accelerators on strength gain.

  • Many different polymer based concrete materials are known today, but the large setting or hardening shrinkage of polymer concrete is a problem to overcome in their practical applications. The setting shrinkage reaches about five to ren times he drying shrinkage ordinary cement concrete, i.e, 50 to $60\times10^{-4}$. This paper deals with a reduction in the hardening shrinkage of unsaturated polyester resin concrete which is treated with respect to shrinkage-reducing agent content, S/a ratio and catalyst content, and tested for length change during hardening, and flexural and compressive strength. It is show that the change of shrinkage-reducing agent content and S/a ratio affected the length change of the unsaturated polyester resin concrete during hardening.

  • In this study, effects of fluosilicate salt based chemical admixture(MZ) on the watertightness and hardening properties of concrete were investigated. Mix proportions for experiment were modulated at 0.55 of water to cement ratio and addition amount of MZ to $2.0\%$ at intervals $0.5\%$. Compressive strength, porosity and microstructure of hardened concrete cured at several days were executed to evaluate watertightness and hardening properties. It is ascertained that watertightness and hardening properties of concrete could be improved by an adequate addition of fluosilicate salt based chemical admixture.

  • Computational procedure within the framework of return mapping technique has been presented to integrate the constitutive behavior of a concrete model. Developed by Ohtani and Chen, this concrete model is based on multiple hardening concept, and is rate-independent and associative. Consistent tangent operator suitable for finite element analysis is derived to preserve the rate of convergence. Accuracy of the integration technique is verified and compared with available experimental data. Computational efficiency is demonstrated by comparing with results based on elasto-plastic tangent.

  • In recent years, due to the construction boom the demand of cement is increasing suddenly and the use of imported cement is inevitable. But, because the quality of imported cement varies quite a lot, many problems have been encountered in construction fields. These problems include hardening retardation, lower early strength and crack of concrete. The object of this study is to explain causes for hardening retardation from a construction field case and propose a solution

  • A plasticity-based concrete model is proposed. The failure surface is elliptic in the ${\sigma}-{\tau}$ stress space. Independent hardening as well as softening is assumed in tension, compression, and shear. The nonlinear inelastic action initiates from the origin in the ${\sigma}-{\varepsilon}$(${\tau}-{\gamma}$) diagram. Several parameters are incorporated to control hardening/softening regions. The model is incorporated into a nonlinear finite element program along with other classical models. Several examples are solved and the results are compared with experimental data and other failure criteria. "Reasonable results" and stable solutions are obtained for different types of reinforced concrete oriented structures.
