  • In steel-concrete composite beams, to improve the cracking resistance of the concrete slab in the hogging moment region, a new type of connector in the interface, named uplift-restricted and slip-permitted screw-type (URSP-S) connector has been proposed. This paper focuses on the behavior of steel-concrete composite beams with URSP-S connectors. A total of three beam specimens including a simply supported beam with URSP-S connectors and two continuous composite beams with different connectors arrangements were designed and tested. More specifically, one continuous composite beam was equipped with URSP-S connectors in negative moment region and traditional shear studs in other regions. For comparison, the other one was designed with only traditional shear studs. The failure modes, crack evolution process, ultimate capacities, strain responses at different locations as well as the interface slip of the three tested specimens were measured and evaluated in-depth. Based on the experimental study, the research findings indicate that the larger slip deformation is allowed while using URSP-S connectors. Meanwhile, the tensile stress reduces and the cracking resistance of the concrete slab improves accordingly. In addition, the overall stiffness and strength of the composite beam become slightly lower than those of the composite beam using traditional shear studs. Moreover, the arrangement suggestion of URSP-S connectors in the composite beam is discussed in this paper for its practical design and application.

  • The permeability of concrete is closely related to the durability and the latter may be expressed by measuring permeability of concrete. According to the results, the permeability of fly ash concrete was lower than that of OPC(PC1) concrete and decreased with increasing fly ash levels(l5%, 30% and 45%). The permeability values of concrete cured in water is significantly lower than those of concrete cured in air, but the differences were reduced with increasing fly ash level. In comparison with OPC(PC1) concrete and high fly ash concrete containing enhanced early strength cements, the latter also had a lower permeability than the former. The permeability of concrete cured in water was decreased with curing time(28 and 180 days) irrespectwe of cement types. However, the trend of results cured in air was opposite to that cured in water due to the rnicrocrackinp: of concrete. It was found that the properties of strength and permeability of concrete were related each other. However, the permeability of concrete was more dependant upon the type of binder used in concrete.

  • In order to use limestone powder as a material for concrete, the mechanical and durability characteristics of cement matrices manufactured by varying the substitution rate were evaluated. In general, limestone powder did not contribute to the cement hydration reaction, so as a result of the compressive strength test of cement mortar using it, the compressive strength decreased as the substitution rate increased. However, as a result of evaluating the durability performance of cement mortar using limestone powder, such as chloride ion penetration resistance, carbonation resistance, and chemical attack resistance, small particles of limestone powder showed superior results compared to the unsubstituted control mortar due to the micro-filler effect of filling the fine pores inside the cement matrix. Therefore, limestone powder is expected to be used as an effective method for improving the durability of concrete. In this study, the durability was evaluated by changing the mixing amount of limestone powder to 0 %, 5 %, 10 %, and 15 %, but it is judged that it is necessary to study in more detail the effect on the durability by changing the end and mixing amount of limestone powder to various levels in the future.

  • This study focused on the influences regarding the use of polyepoxide-based polymer and silica fume (SF) on the fresh and hardened state properties of self-compacting lightweight concrete (SCLC) along with their impacts on electrical resistance and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV). To do so, two series of compositions each of which consists of twelve mixes, with water to binder (W/B) ratios of 0.35 and 0.4 were cast. Three different silica fume/binder ratios of 0, 5%, and 10% were considered along with four different polymer/binder ratios of 0, 5%, 10%, and 15%. Afterwards, the rupture modulus, tensile strength, 14-day, 28-day, and 90-day compressive strength, the UPV and the electrical resistance of the mixes were tested. The results indicated that although the use of polymer could enhance the passing and filling abilities, it could lead to a decrease of segregation resistance. In addition, the interaction of the SF and the polymeric contents enhanced the workability. However, the impacts regarding the use of polymeric contents on fresh state properties of SCLC were more prevalent than those regarding the use of SF. Besides the fresh state properties, the durability and mechanical properties of the mixes were affected due to the use of polymeric and SF contents. In other words, the use of the SF and the polymer enhanced the durability and mechanical properties of SCLC specimens.

  • Steel-concrete-steel composite structures with bidirectional webs (SCSBWs) are used in large-scale projects and exhibit good mechanical performances and constructional efficiency. The shear behaviors of SCSBW deep beam members in key joints or in locations subjected to concentrated forces are of concern in design. To address this issue, experimental program is investigated to examine the deep-beam shear behaviors of SCSBWs, in which the cracking process and force transfer mechanism are revealed. Compared with the previously proposed truss model, it is found that a strut-and-tie model is more suitable for describing the shear mechanism of SCSBW deep beams with a short span and sparse transverse webs. According to the experimental analyses, a new model is proposed to predict the shear capacities of SCSBW deep beams. This model uses strut-and-tie concept and introduces web shear and dowel action to consider the coupled multi mechanisms. A stress decomposition method is used to distinguish the contributions of different shear-transferring paths. Based on case studies, a simplified model is further developed, and the explicit solution is derived for design efficiency. The proposed models are verified using experimental data, which are proven to have good accuracy and efficiency and to be suitable for practical application.

  • Chloride is one of the most common threats to reinforced concrete (RC) durability. Alkaline environment of concrete makes a passive layer on the surface of reinforcement bars that prevents the bar from corrosion. However, when the chloride concentration amount at the reinforcement bar reaches a certain level, deterioration of the passive protection layer occurs, causing corrosion and ultimately reducing the structure's safety and durability. Therefore, understanding the chloride diffusion and its prediction are important to evaluate the safety and durability of RC structure. In this study, the chloride diffusion coefficient is predicted by machine learning techniques. Various machine learning techniques such as multiple linear regression, decision tree, random forest, support vector machine, artificial neural networks, extreme gradient boosting annd k-nearest neighbor were used and accuracy of there models were compared. In order to evaluate the accuracy, root mean square error (RMSE), mean square error (MSE), mean absolute error (MAE) and coefficient of determination (R2) were used as prediction performance indices. The k-fold cross-validation procedure was used to estimate the performance of machine learning models when making predictions on data not used during training. Grid search was applied to hyperparameter optimization. It has been shown from numerical simulation that ensemble learning methods such as random forest and extreme gradient boosting successfully predicted the chloride diffusion coefficient and artificial neural networks also provided accurate result.

  • The aim of the research is to evaluate the possibility of using coal gasification slag (CGS) as a combined aggregate for concrete mixture. To achieve this goal, the fundamental properties and the durability of concrete were analyzed depending on various combining ratio of CGS into both fine aggregate with favorable gradation and relatively coarse particles. According to the results of the experiment, slump and slump flow were increased with content of CGS regardless of crushed fine aggregate with good and poor gradations while the air content was decreased. For the compressive strength of the concrete, in the case of using the crushed aggregate with good gradation, increasing CGS content decreased compressive strength of the concrete, while when the concrete used crushed aggregate with poor gradation, the compressive strength was the maximum at 50% of CGS content. As a durability assessment, drying shrinkage was decreased and carbonation resistance was improved by increasing CGS content. On the other hand, for freeze-thawing resistance, CGS influenced adverse effect on freeze-thawing resistance. Therefore, it is known that an additional air entrainer is needed to increase the freeze-thawing resistance when CGS was used as a combined aggregate for concrete.

  • Deterioration induced by the freezing and thawing in concrete often leads to the reduction in concrete durability by the cracking or surface spalling. In this paper, the deterioration prediction model for concrete structures subjected to the irregular freeze-thaw was proposed from the results of accelerated laboratory test using the constant temperature condition and acceleration factor from the in-situ weather data.

  • An experimental study is carried out to investigate the characteristics of concrete containing high volume fly ash. The compressive and tensile strength of fly ash concrete is slightly lower than those of ordinary concrete between 7and 28 days, however, the long-term compressive strength is significantly higher at 180 days. In durability, the high volume fly ash concretes are generally higher resistance of freeze and thaw and lowe chloride penetration, however, the depth of carbonation is increased with increasing fly ash content.
