This paper aims to investigate the effects of replacing cement with ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) in self compacting concrete in the fresh and hardened state. The performance of SCC in moderate climate is well investigated but few studies are available on the effect of hot environment. In this paper, the effect of initial water-curing period and curing conditions on the performance of SCC is reported. Cement was substituted by GGBFS by weight at two different levels of substitution (15% and 25%). Concrete specimens were stored either in a standard environment (T=$20^{\circ}C$, RH=100%) or in the open air in North Africa during the summer period (T=35 to $40^{\circ}C$; R.H=50 to 60%) after an initial humid curing period of 0, 3, 7 or 28 days. Compressive strength at 28 and 90 days, capillary absorption, sorptivity, water permeability, porosity and chloride ion penetration were investigated. The results show that the viscosity and yield stress are decreased with increasing dosage of GGBFS. The importance of humid curing in hot climates in particular when GGBFS is used is also proved. The substitution of cement by GGBFS improves SCC durability at long term. The best performances were observed in concrete specimens with 25% GGBFS and for 28 days water curing.
Concrete structures stand in poor surrounding than it has ever been met before, because they are installed in severe conditions such as chloride penetration. $CO_2$ gas, water and so on. Therefore, the countermeasure to efficiently protect from the deterioration of concrete structures should be urgently considered. From this point of view, this study was aimed to develop surface treatment systems for concrete structures, which cover physical properties, long term durability and economic consideration. Developing the optimal surface treatment materials, powder type polymer or liquid type polymer was added to inorganic base materials. Three surface treatment materials which had shown best results in primary tests were selected and durability tests were fulfilled. Consequently optimum surface treatment material was developed. The surface treatment materials, which were developed through this study, can efficiently extend the service life of concrete structures. As a result, the life cycle cost should be reduced and the waste of material resources would be cut down.
An attempt is made to develop an eco-friendly concrete with ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and pond ash as partial replacement materials for cement and fine aggregate, respectively without compromising the strength and durability. Sixteen concrete mixes were developed by replacing cement and fine aggregate by GGBS and pond ash, respectively in stages of 10%. The maximum replacement levels of cement and fine aggregates were 50% and 30% respectively. Experimental results revealed that the optimum percentage of GGBS and pond ash replacement levels were 30% and 20% respectively. The optimized mix was used further to study the flexural behavior and durability properties. Reinforced Concrete (RC) beams were cast and tested under a four-point bending configuration. Also, the specimens prepared from the optimized mix were subjected to alternate wet and dry cycles of acid (3.5% HCl and H2SO4) and sulphate (10% MgSO4) solutions. Results show that the optimized concrete mix with GGBS and pond ash had a negligible weight loss and strength reduction.
Ternary blended concrete containing both fly ash and granulated blast furnace slag is initial cost effective, and environment friendly. Furthermore, it has many technical advantages such as improvement of long term compressive strength, rheology property, reduction of hydration heat, etc. However, use and data on the performance of ternary blended concrete are limited, and it is necessary to study on the adoption of this technology. This study examined the durability performance of ternary blended concrete comparing with binary blended concrete and ordinary portland concrete. From the results of this study, it was concluded that ternary blended concrete is very suitable to submerged zone under maine environment.
Recent long-span bridges, such as Kwang-Ahn Grand bridge, Seo-Hae Grand Bridge, Young-Jong Grand Bridge, etc, have been designed and constructed near the shore. Thus, it needs to analyze the durability of marine concrete structures which are exposed to severe chloride environments. It is well known that corrosion of reinforcement steel in concrete is one of the major factors for the durability of concrete structures. The objective of this experimental study is to investigate the performance of impressed current system and corrosion inhibitors for the corrosion protection of reinforced concrete structures. Concrete test specimens were made with various test parameters, such as cover depth, steel diameter, compressive strength, direction and frequency of notch. For the efficient evaluation of these corrosion protection systems, these tests have been carried out in the shore.
Reinforced concrete structures covered creek for road vehicle located in urban areas have been experiencing corrosion of concrete and reinforcing steel caused by $H_2S$ gases generated by anaerobic bacterial. H2S gases react with oxygen and water to form sulfuric acid ($H_2SO_4$). This acid chemically attacks concrete, and sulfate ions penetrate into the concrete, causing rebar corrosion. In this work, to determine the conditions of RC culvert boxes which were constructed in the 1970s, various tests were conducted, including carbonation depth, compressive strength, half-cell potential measurements, and XRD analyses. Results indicated that the concrete deterioration was caused by sulfate attack and rebar corrosion. This paper discusses the evaluation on the durability of reinforced concrete structures covered creek for road vehicle.
Long-term durability of the reinforced concrete structures exposed to marine environment deteriorates seriously by the attack of the chloride ion from see water results in corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete. Their coating effect is aluminum oxide-isocyanate-based coating material, resistance of chloride penetration, carbonation and freezing and thawing resistance were compared to acryl-based coating material and sealer type o waterproofing material. Aluminum oxide-isocyante-based and acryl-based coating material show higher resistance to chloride penetration and carbonation than the sealer type do waterproofing material and aluminum oxide-isocyanate-based coating resist about 99% of chloride penetration. Resultants to the accelerated test for freezing and thawing, coating concrete show higher resistance than non-coating concrete, respectively.
Recently, there has been a intensive social interest for concrete structures with respect to durability by carbonation, chemical attack etc. Specially, the deterioration of concrete due to chemical attack in environments such as Wastewater Treatment Facilities is important factors degrading the durability of concrete structure. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate on deterioration of Wastewater Treatment Facilities concrete to chemical attack through instrumental analysis such as XRD, SEM and EDS. According to the results of this study. Wastewater Treatment Facilities concrete to chemical attack due to $So_{4}^{2-},\;Mg^{2+}$ ions founded out to appear deterioration materials peak : ettringite/thaumasite. gypsum and brucite peak.
Concrete structures have been damaged by salt, carbonization, freezing and thawing and the others. Therefore, it is needed to protect durability and performance according to the appropriate materials and methods in the concrete structures. In general, several types of polymer and silicate are used as protecting deterioration agents of concrete structures, but these agents have many problems because of low durability and properties. In this study, It developed the deterioration restraining agent using polycondensed silicate and monomer that can block a deterioration cause such as $CO_2$ gas, salt and water from the outside and enhance waterproofing ability by reinforcing the concrete surface when applying it to concrete structures. Also, it developed the systems for improving concrete performance using a deterioration restraining agent.
Recently, reinforced concrete structures exposed to severe enviroment are increased in metropolitan area. The acid rain and CO2 penetrated towad rebar, thus rebar corrosion occurred. The corrosion of rebar in concrete is, as in most corrosion processes, an electrochemical nature. The corrosion may severely affect on durability and service life of such a concrete structures. This study was performed for the purpose of acquiring data about corrosion condition and considering a countermeasure to prevent rebar from corroding due to carbonation of concrete. An accelerated car bonation testing procedure was applied to measure the evolution of carbonation and rebar corrosion with time for various water-binder ratios and cement types.
