Simulation of vibrations of Ting Kau Bridge due to vehicular loading from measurements

  • The Ting Kau Bridge in Hong Kong is a cable-stayed bridge comprising two main spans and two side spans. The bridge deck is supported by three towers, an end pier and an abutment. Each of the three towers consists of a single reinforced concrete mast strengthened by transverse cables and struts. The bridge deck is supported by four inclined planes of cables emanating from anchorages at the tower tops. In view of the heavy traffic on the bridge, and threats from typhoons and earthquakes originated in areas nearby, the dynamic behaviour of long-span cable-supported bridges in the region is always an important consideration in their design. Baseline finite element models of various levels of sophistication have been built not only to match the bridge geometry and cable forces specified on the as-constructed drawings but also to be calibrated using the vibration measurement data captured by the Wind and Structural Health Monitoring System. This paper further describes the analysis of axle loading data, as well as the generation of random axle loads and simulation of vibrations of the bridge using the finite element models. Various factors affecting the vehicular loading on the bridge will also be examined.

Analysis on Bond Characteristics of Reinforcements for UHPC Hybrid Cable-Stayed Bridge Deck Joints (초고성능 콘크리트 하이브리드 사장교 바닥판 접합부 철근의 부착 성능에 대한 해석)

  • Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC), which is characterized by its high strength and advanced ductile behavior that is much superior to those of convention concrete, is a useful material to make thinner and longer bridges. The precast segmental construction method utilizing UHPC has been mainly studied because cast-in-place UHPC is very difficult and complicate to be achieved. As a part of those research, the structural performance evaluation of different types of joint connection method for hybrid cable-stayed bridge utilizing UHPC by using nonlinear analyses is performed in this study. The bond stress at joint is obtained by section force analyses for a 600 m cable-stayed bridge deck, and compared with the required bond stress at joint. Analysis results show that the U Type connection and straight type connection resist the highest ultimate load and bond strength, respectively. In addition, all considered joint connection systems satisfy the bond performances at joint required in the final stage of cable-stayed bridge utilizing UHPC.

  • Fatigue performance of a precast FRP-concrete composite deck with long span economically applicable to a cable-stayed bridge was evaluated. From the experiment, it is verified that the precast FRP-concrete composite deck has sufficient fatigue performance.

  • This paper presents the assessment of 7-wire strand monitoring using acoustic emission technique for bridges. 7-wire strand is widely used construction materials to provide additional tensile force to bridges. PSC (PreStressed Concrete) bridge and cable-stayed bridge are representatives for such cases. However, as the bridge aging progresses recently, corrosion problems of strand are emerging. For this reason, various NDT (Non-Destructive Test) methods for cable inspection are being studied and applied to the field. One of the NDT methods, acoustic emission technique, is known as an effective technique to detect cable damage and breakage. In this study, to evaluate the applicability of acoustic emission technique to bridges, acoustic emission signals according to damage of the strand were acquired and analyzed by tensile test. Moreover, The optimal AE sensor type was selected for field application. As a result, it is considered that the acoustic emission technique will be able to detect corrosion breakage and signs of rupture.

  • Since the modal pushover analysis (MPA) is introduced by A.K.Chopra in 2002, it has been the leading procedure for the seismic evalution of structures. However it has scarcely used on bridge structures dueing to its inherent limitation. In this paper, MPA is applied on cable-stayed bridges to check its applicability on such structures.

Each of the three towers consists of a single reinforced concrete mast which reduces its section in steps, and it is strengthened by transverse cables and struts in the transverse vertical plane. The bridge deck is supported by four inclined planes of cables emanating from anchorages at the tower tops. In view of the threat from typhoons, the dynamic behaviour of long-span cable-supported bridges in the region is always an important consideration in their design. This paper is devoted to the ambient vibration measurements of the bridge for evaluation of dynamic characteristics including the natural frequencies and mode shapes. It also describes the modelling of the bridge. A few finite element models are developed and calibrated to match with the field data and the results of subsequent structural health monitoring of the bridge.

Mechanical performance and design optimization of rib-stiffened super-wide bridge deck with twin box girders in concrete

  • The present study fundamentally investigated the mechanical performance of the rib-stiffened super-wide bridge deck with twin box girders in concrete, which is a very popular application to efficiently widen the bridges with normal span. The shear lag effects of the specific cross-sections were firstly studied. The spatial stress distribution and local stiffness of the bridge deck with twin box girders were then investigated under several typical wheel load conditions. Meanwhile, a comparative study for the bridge deck with and without stiffening ribs was also carried out during the investigation; thereby, a design optimization for the stiffening ribs was further suggested. Finally, aiming at the preliminary design, an approximate methodology to manually calculate the bending moments of the rib-stiffened bridge deck was analytically proposed for engineers to quickly assess its performance. This rib-stiffened bridge deck with twin box girders can be widely applied for concrete (especially concrete cable-stayed) bridges with normal span, however, requiring a super-wide bridge width due to the traffic flow.

Design & Construction of PSC Box-Girder Bridge with Central Suspension by Extradosed Cables and Constant Girder Depth (중앙일면식 케이블과 등형고를 갖는 Extradosed PSC 교량의 설계 및 시공)

  • The recent development of PSC girder bridges are mostly dedicated for optimization of self-weight, simplification of girder section for easy construction and minimization of maintenance efforts. Moreover some of those bridges are required as a landmark facility which raises the image of locality and harmony with surroundings. An extradosed bridge is one of the best alternates which not only covers the longer span than PSC box girder and also performs the role of landmark facility with much cheaper cost than cable stayed bridge. Hyundai is carrying out the construction of unique style extradosed bridge which have central suspension system and uniform girder depth named Keong-An grand bridge on the Sungnam-Janghowon Express highway. In this paper, major process of design and construction features of Keong-An bridge is presented.
