  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete bridge piers and to provide the data for developing improved seismic design criteria. A computer program, named RCAHEST(Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The smeared crack approach is incorporated. In boundary plane at which each member with different thickness is connected. local discontinuity in deformation due to the abrupt change in their stiffness can be taken into account by introducing interface element. The effect of number of load reversals with the same displacement amplitude has been also taken into account to model the reinforcing steel and concrete. The proposed numerical method for the prediction of seismic behavior for reinforced concrete bridge piers is veri fief by comparison with the reliable experimental results.

  • The design of anchorage zone in prestressed concrete cable stayed bridges is very important area due to the more accurate analysis is needed to estimate the behavior. In the study, since the cable anchorage zone in the prestressed concrete cable-stayed bridge is subject to a large amount of concentrated tendon forces, it shows very complicated stress distributions and causes a serious local cracks. Accordingly, It is necessary to investigate the parameters of affecting the stress distribution, such as the cable inclination, the position of anchor plate, the modeling method and the three dimensional effect. The tensile stress distribution of anchorage zone is compared to the actual design condition by varing the stiffness of spring element in the local modeling and an appropriate position of anchor plate is determined. These results would be elementary data to the stress state of anchorage zone and more efficient design.

  • Full-depth precast concrete deck bridge has shear pockets for shear connectors that give composite action with steel girder. Strength and shear stiffness of shear connection that is needed to design shear connectors in case that shear pockets are filled with nonshrink mortar are investigated. In case that simple span full-depth precast concrete deck bridge is designed by allowable stress design, distribution of shear connector is suggested and details of precast panel that is placed on the support are proposed. Appropriate distribution of shear connectors in strength design and fatigue design is investigated through parameter analyses using partial interaction theory. The effects of nonshrink mortar strength is studied using the results of experiments and analyses and adequate strength is proposed.

  • This study was performed to propose design bending moment formula for long-span slab on a composite two-girder bridge. FEM models representing slab spaning between 4m and 12m were analyzed, and parameters such as girder flexibility and orthotropy of slab were considered. By regression of the parametric analyses results, the moment formula that can predict the design moment with reasonable margin of safety and correctness was developed. The research also showed that the design bending moment from Korean Bridge Design Code overestimated the design moment for the span length under gm, and underestimated for the span length over 9m.

  • A methodology, based on fragility functions, is proposed to evaluate the seismic performance of seismic isolated $45^{\circ}$ skewed concrete bridge: 1) twelve types of seismic isolation devices are considered based on two different design parameters 2) fragility functions of a three-span bridge with and without seismic isolation devices are analytically evaluated based on 3D nonlinear incremental dynamic analyses which seismic input consists of 20 selected ground motions. The optimum combinations of isolation device design parameters are identified comparing, for different limit states, the performance of 1) the Seismic Isolated Bridges (SIB) and 2) Not Seismic Isolated Bridge (NSIB) designed according to the AASHTO standards.

  • This study is concerned wiか the practical optimum design of concrete framed structures considering serviceability - deflection, crack, fatigue. The optimizing problems of framed structure are formulated with the objective function and the constraints which take the section properties as the design variables. The objective functions are formulated as the total cost of the structures and the constraints are derived by using the criteria with respect to safety and serviceability based on the part of concrete bridge in the Korea standard code of road bridge. The SLP method is introduced to solve the formulated nonlinear programming problems in this study and tested out through the numerical examples. This developed optimizing algorithm is tested out and examined through the numerical examples for the practical use of design on the concrete framed structures. And their results are compared and analyzed to examine the possibility of optimization, the applicability and the convergency of this algorithm.

  • Due to many advantages such as light weight, fast installation, high durability, composite bridge deck is considered to be one of the promissing alternatives to concrete bridge deck. The paper presents procedures of finite element analysis and laminate design for composite bridge deck of triangular shape for DB24 load. After design of the section glass reinforced composite deck tube of double triangular section with 200mm profile was fabricated with pultrusion and the procedure are presented.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the seismic behavior of circular reinforced concrete bridge piers with confinement steel and to provide the data for developing improved seismic design criteria. Fourteen circular reinforced concrete bridge piers were tested under a constant axial load and a cyclically reversed horizontal load. The accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process may be enhanced by the use of sophisticated nonlinear finite element analysis program. A computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. In the companion paper, the proposed numerical method for the seismic performance assessment of circular reinforced concrete bridge piers with confinement steel is verified by comparison with experimental results.

  • The current encased-concrete deep corrugated steel plate has an arch type plate structure, which is a compressive strength-dominant structure that has a small moment due to its arch shape. Therefore, it increases the strength against compression by adding reinforcements to make concrete-filling spaces for increasing the compressive strength and forming cross sections that contain reinforced concrete. In this study, the safety factor of the new-concept encased-concrete bridge plate member was evaluated by comparing the compressive strength obtained from the compressive tests, flexural tests and the design compressive strength determined by using the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC, 2003), which is a design standard for the encased-concrete bridge plate structures. The results of the safety factor evaluation using the design compressive strength and the test results showed that the safety factor was well above the appropriate value 2.0, which could be adjudged very conservative. If the safety factor based on this study results is considered and applied to the design, economical construction will be possible due to the reduced cross section and construction cost.
