A Study on Science Teachers' Practices and Perceptions of Using Analogies (과학 교사들의 비유 사용 실태 및 인식 조사)

  • We examined how science teachers in middle schools practiced and perceived using analogies. A survey was administered to obtain 131 teachers' responses from 22 middle schools in Seoul. Most science teachers used analogies frequently in their instructions, and had positive attitudes toward the effect of analogies. They agreed that relevant figures should be presented with analogies, analogy itself should be explained to their students, and something to mislead the students' idea should be mentioned. They also responded that they practiced so in their instructions. However, it was revealed that they neither explained a concept with several analogies nor helped students to make self-generated analogies. Their idea was that proper analogy sources and instructional models were needed for using analogy effectively in science instruction. The teachers with above masters degree explained the analogy itself, and they perceived the needs for supplements and strategies in using analogy more affirmatively. The teachers possessing modern perceptions to science instructions and students' activities rather than classical ones used analogies more frequently and effectively.

Development of an Electric Circuit Transient Analogy Model in a Vertical Closed Loop Ground Heat Exchanger (수직밀폐형 지중열교환기의 회로 과도해석 상사모델 개발)

  • Several numerical or analytical models have been proposed to analyze the thermal response of vertical ground heat exchangers (GHEX). However, most models are valid only after several hours of operation since they neglect the heat capacity of the borehole. Recently, the short time response of the GHEX became important in system simulation to improve efficiency. In this paper, a simple new method to evaluate the short time response of the GHEX by using an analogy model of electric circuit transient analysis was presented. The new transient heat exchanger model adopting the concept of thermal capacitance of the borehole as well as the steady-state thermal resistance showed the transient thermal resistance of the borehole. The model was validated by in-situ thermal response test and then compared with the DST model of the TRNSYS program.

Students' Alternative Conceptions of Plate Boundaries and Their Conception Revision According to Their Reasoning Patterns

  • This study investigated students' alternative conceptions of plate boundaries and their conception revision according to the pattern of students' reasoning. Participants were twenty-two 10th grade high school students. All participants were asked to draw the three types of plate boundaries and to explain their drawings. Nine students participated in the reasoning activity. To this end, a semi-structured interview was conducted during which key questions were asked for the students to individually answer. The key questions used in the reasoning activity were created, by utilizing questions used in the previous studies. The findings revealed that the alternative conceptions of plate boundaries were classified into three levels based on established criteria. Students who attempted a variety of reasoning strategies such as causal reasoning, using an analogy, abductive reasoning, data reconstruction and concept combination, revised their alternative conception to a scientific conception after the reasoning activity. On the other hand, some students could not revise their alternative conceptions because they only conducted an incomplete reasoning strategy. The study also found that they were unable to use other reasoning strategies, either.

New insights in piezoelectric free-vibrations using simplified modeling and analyses

  • New insights are presented in simplified modeling and analysis of free vibrations of piezoelectric - based smart structures and systems. These consist, first, in extending the wide used piezoelectric-thermal analogy (TA) simplified modeling approach in currently static actuation to piezoelectric free-vibrations under short-circuit (SC) and approximate open-circuit (OC) electric conditions; second, the popular piezoelectric strain induced - potential (IP) simplified modeling concept is revisited. It is shown that the IP resulting frequencies are insensitive to the electric SC/OC conditions; in particular, SC frequencies are found to be the same as those resulting from the newly proposed OC TA. Two-dimensional plane strain (PStrain) and plane stress (PStress) free-vibrations problems are then analyzed for above used SC and approximate OC electric conditions. It is shown theoretically and validated numerically that, for both SC and OC electric conditions, PStress frequencies are lower than PStrain ones, and that 3D frequencies are bounded from below by the former and from above by the latter. The same holds for the modal electro-mechanical coupling coefficient that is retained as a comparator of presented models and analyses.

The Influences of Role-Playing Analogy in Chemistry concept Learning (화학 개념 학습에서 역할놀이 비유 활동의 효과)

  • This study investigated the influences of role-playing analogy upon students' scientific conceptual understandings, application abilities, retentions of conception and application, and learning motivation. Four classes of 7th grade at a middle school in Seoul were assigned to control and treatment groups, and taught about 'motion of molecules' for 4 class hours. For the Treatment group, role-playing analogy instruction was used. The traditional instruction was used for the control group. Data analysis indicated that the scores of the treatment group were significantly higher than those of the control group in the tests on the conception, the retention of application, and the confidence. In the tests of the application, attention, and relevance, there were significant interactions between instruction and student' gender. Both female and male students in the treatment group scored significantly higher than those in the control group in the application test. In the case of attention and relevance tests, male students in the treatment group scored significantly higher than those in the control group. Educational implications are discussed.

The Analysis and Comparison of Analogies in High School Science Textbooks (고등학교 과학 교과서에 제시된 비유 분석 및 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the use of analogies in high school science textbooks in explaining abstract science concepts. For this study, the analogies used in high school science textbooks of the 7th science curriculum were analyzed. The analogies were classified into the six following types: the nature of shared attributes, representation, analogy/target abstraction, number of analogies, with and without specified use of analogy, and casual relations. A total of 189 analogies were found in the 7th science textbooks. This means that 16.9 analogies were used for each book. In analyzing the analogies, we found some analogies were appropriate, while others were ambiguous and inadequate in explaining the various science concepts. The number of analogies used varied considerably according to the publishing company and the science domain. For more effective understanding of various science concepts, it is necessary to develop more analogies and research the application of analogy.

An analysis on the Formative Aesthetic of Thierry Mugler' Clothing (Thierry Mugler의 의상에 나타난 조형미 분석)

  • This study analyzed the works, introduced in the collections of Thierry Mugler in an aim to identify formative aesthetic and design concepts. As the data to study the creative concepts and expressions of the designer, fashion photographs were gathered in a focus on collections. The formative aesthetic expressed in the works of Thierry Mugler were characterized by the eroticism and the futurism. The formative aesthetic of eroticism were specified into the sexualism, primitivism and fetishism, and those of futurism were divided into the cosmocorps and the grotesque. The eroticism was based on the design concept on the body of woman. The sexuality was expressed through the design concept of opposing, extreme and conversion method. The primitivism was presented through the design concept of extreme method to express a returning to nature and a nostalgia and an adoration for the past. The pieces, expressed the fetishism, was presented through opposing concepts, such as a bondage and an extreme expose. It was indicated that the design concept of futurism was based on the future. The cosmocorps was expressed through the extreme method by using geometrical formative aesthetic and contrast color combination. The grotesque represented the mysterious and abhorrent futurism through the design concept of depaysment conversion and analogy.

The Characteristics in the Processes of Generating Analogy for Lessons by Pre-Service Science Teachers (예비과학교사가 수업을 위한 비유를 생성하는 과정에서 나타나는 특징)

  • In this study, we investigated the characteristics in the processes of generating analogy for lessons by pre-service science teachers. Eight pre-service teachers at a college of education in Seoul participated in this study. After the workshop of analogy in science education, they generated analogies for lessons. In order to investigate thought processes deeply, we used the think-aloud method and also conducted semi-structured interviews after their activities. Worksheets written by the pre-service teachers were collected. Their activities and interviews were recorded and videotaped. The characteristics in the processes of generating analogy were analyzed in the perspectives of student, analog, and concept. The analyses of the results revealed that they generated analogies to correct students' misconceptions and also considered misconceptions that could be caused by their analogies. They generated analogies using sources with which students are familiar. They also generated concrete and everyday analogies rather than abstract and artificial analogies. There were some cases where they did not clearly grasp the target concepts and expressed the concepts which were not covered in the unit. On the bases of the results, we suggest some educational implications for pre-service science teacher education.

Study on Characteristics of the Development Process of Fashion Design Thinking through the Lexicon (어휘를 통한 패션 디자인 발상 전개 과정의 특성 연구)

  • Creative thinking requires an ability to draw ideas on the given topic in a given time period with concentration. For this, the development process of design concept on the topic was collected through experiments and interviews targeting 10 fashion education experts and 10 clothing majors. After the analysis, the results are as follows: First of all, divergent thinking was done to find as many ideas and possibilities as possible at the step of expanding the topic by analogy. This showed characteristics of spreading thoughts through the spread of lexicon to professional field knowledge of learned, individual's cultural background, other art fields. Second, abstracted and designed words that are expanded and listed by the topic analogy were specified the topic gradually through the free combination method between lexicons. The sentences made by the combination of lexicons were interpreted through the serial listing method, in which the connection between sentences had the meaning of orderly cause and effect form, and the parallel listing method that treated information at once. Third, the few characteristics of the procedure that visualizing into the specific design are as follows. Firstly, the method to transform image that lexicon has into the one appropriate to the topic, the case that reflects external characteristics of selected designed word, and the case which reflects as the extrinsic expression of personal immanent and tactic desires. This study has its means to propose methods and directions to help create more creative and systematic ideas by analyzing the characteristics that appeared during the process of thinking language-oriented design.

Focusing effect of a Metallic Layer according to the Cooling Condition and Height in a Severe Accident (중대사고시 금속용융물층의 냉각 조건과 높이가 열속 집중 현상에 미치는 영향)

  • Focusing effect of a metallic layer in a severe accident depending on the aspect ratios and cooling conditions of top plate and side wall was investigated. Experiments were carried out for Rayleigh numbers and aspect ratio in the range of $8.49{\times}10^7{\sim}5.43{\times}10^9$, 0.135~0.541 respectively. In order to achieve high Rayleigh numbers, the heat transfer experiments were replaced by mass transfer experiments based on the heat and mass transfer analogy. A sulfuric acid-copper sulfate ($H_2SO4-CuSO_4$) electroplating system was adopted as the mass transfer system. The experimental results agreed well with the Rayleigh-Benard natural convection correlations of Dropkin and Somerscales and Globe and Dropkin. When compared with the standard Rayleigh-Benard problem, the cooling by the side wall is even higher than the top. For a shorter height, the interaction between the heated and cooled plumes increases due to decrease of the height. Thus, the heat transfer increases.
