  • In order to recover pure alumina from black dross, leaching of mechanically activated black dross with NaOH solution resulted in an aluminate solution containing a small amount of Si(IV). Selective adsorption of Si(IV) onto hydrotalcite was investigated from 5 M NaOH solution where the concentration of Al(III) and Si(IV) was 13000 and 150 mg/L, respectively. Only Si(IV) was selectively loaded onto hydrotalcite, while Al(III) remained in the solution. Effect of the calcination treatment of hydrotalcite and concentration of calcined hydrotalcite and NaOH on the loading of Si(IV) was investigated. Although the loading percentage of Si(IV) was low from 5 M NaOH solution, most of the Si(IV) was removed by adjusting the concentration of NaOH by 48 times dilution with water when the concentration of calcined hydrotalcite was higher than 4.5 g/L. The loading of Si(IV) onto calcined hydrotalcite followed Freundlich adsorption isotherm.

  • This study explored the possibility of forming a coating layer containing alginic acid on the surface of a magnesium alloy to be used as a biomaterial. We formed a coating layer on the surface of a magnesium alloy using a plasma electrolytic oxidation process in an electrolytic solution with different amounts of alginic acid (0 g/L ~ 8 g/L). The surface morphology of all samples was observed, and craters and nodules typical of the PEO process were formed. The cross-sectional shape of the samples confirmed that the thickness of the coating layer became thicker as the alginic acid concentration increased. It was confirmed that the thickness and hardness of the sample significantly increase with increasing alginic acid concentration. The porosity of the surface and cross section tended to decrease as the alginic acid concentration increased. The XRD patterns of all samples revealed the formation of MgO, Mg2SiO4, and MgF2 complex phases. Polarization tests were conducted in a Stimulate Body Fluid solution similar to the body's plasma. We found that a high amount of alginic acid concentration in the electrolyte improved the degree of corrosion resistance of the coating layer.

  • This paper compares the inhibition properties of aspartic and lactic acid salts with nitrite ions and their effect on critical chloride concentration. The tests were carried employing carbon steel specimens in saturated lime solution with varying pH in the range between13 to 13.6. The critical chloride concentration was estimated through multiple specimen potentiostatic tests at potentials in the usual range for passive rebar in the alkaline concrete of atmospheric structures. During tests, chloride salt was added every 48 h until all the specimens showed localized attacks. The cumulative distribution curves, i.e. the number of corroded specimens as a function of the chlorides concentration was obtained. Furthermore, IR spectra were recorded for the evaluation of the presence of the organic inhibitors on the passivity film. The results confirmed the inhibitory effect of 0.1M aspartate comparable with nitrite ions, at a similar concentration. Addition of calcium lactate did not result in an increase in the critical chloride concentration. However, the formation of a massive scale containing the substance that could reduce the corrosion propagation was observed.

  • The performance of an electrodialyzer for concentrating seawater is predicted by means of a computer simulation, which includes the following five steps; Step 1 mass transport; Step 2 current density distribution; Step 3 cell voltage; Step 4 NaCl concentration in a concentrated solution and energy consumption; Step 5 limiting current density. The program is developed on the basis of the following assumption; (1) Solution leakage and electric current leakage in an electrodialyzer are negligible. (2) Direct current electric resistance of a membrane includes the electric resistance of a boundary layer formed on the desalting surface of the membrane due to concentration polarization. (3) Frequency distribution of solution velocity ratio in desalting cells is equated by the normal distribution. (4) Current density i at x distant from the inlets of desalting cells is approximated by the quadratic equation. (5) Voltage difference between the electrodes at the entrance of desalting cells is equal to the value at the exits. (6) Limiting current density of an electrodialyzer is defined as average current density applied to an electrodialyzer when current density reaches the limit of an ion exchange membrane at the outlet of a desalting cell in which linear velocity and electrolyte concentration are the least. (7) Concentrated solutions are extracted from concentrating cells to the outside of the process. The validity of the computer simulation model is demonstrated by comparing the computed results with the performance of electrodialyzers operating in salt-manufacturing plants. The model makes it possible to discuss optimum specifications and operating conditions of a practical-scale electrodialyzer.

  • In this study, we calculated the redistribution of vacancy concentration in metal specimens induced by stress-induced diffusion at a high temperature. To deduce the governing equation, we associated the unit volume change equation of strains with a differential equation of vacancy concentration as a function of stress using the stress-strain relationship. In this governing equation, we considered stress as the only chemical potential parameter to stay in the scope of this study, which provided the vacancy concentration equation as of stress gradient in metals. The equation was then mathematically delineated to derive a analytical solution for a transient, one-dimensional diffusion case. With the help of Korhonen's approximation and the boundary conditions, we successfully deduced a general solution from the governing equation. To visualize the feasibility of our solutions, we applied the solution to two different stress-induced cases - a rod with fixed concentrated stresses at both ends and a rod with varying concentrated stresses at both ends. Although it is necessary to legitimatized the model in the future for improvement, our results showed that the model can be used to interpret the location of structural defects, the formation of vacancy, and furthermore the high temperature behavior of metals.

  • In this study, pork loin was cured for 20 days in the 2$^{\circ}C$ curing solution with the salt concentration of 3, 5, 7 and 9% respectively, and the effects of salt concentration and curing time on myofibrillar protein extractability (MPE), myofibrillar fragmentation index (MFI), water holding capacity (WHC), salt content, and palatability of pork loin were investigated. The pork loin cured in the 3, 5 and 7% curing solution showed the increased level of MPE and WHC up to 20 days of curing time, and the increased level of MFI up to 16 days of curing time. Also those values increased with the increasing salt concentration, regardless of the curing time. The pork loin cured in the 9% curing solution did not show any consistency in the results. The boiled cured pork loin showed better color up to 16 days of curing time, as the salt concentration of curing solution increased. The color of pork loin cured in the 3% curing solution was not uniform. The pork loin cured in the 9% curing solution showed good color, but its flavor and palatability were unacceptable. The palatability of pork loin could be improved significantly by curing it in the 5% curing solution for 16 days, and in the 7% curing solution for 12 days.

  • This paper investigated the effects of ionic strength in the medium on a preconcentrator for a protein sample with low concentration. The preconcentration chip was designed and fabricated using a polydimethylsiloxane replica through standard lithophotography. A glass substrate is silanized prior to functionalizing the nanoparticles for self-assembly at a designed region. Due to the overlap of electrical double layers in a nanofluidic channel, a concentration polarization effect can be achieved using an electric field. A nonlinear electrokinetic flow is induced, resulting in the fast accumulation of proteins in front of the induced ionic depletion zone, so called exclusion-enrichment effect. Thus, the protein sample can be driven by electroosmotic flow and accumulated at a specific location. The chip is used to collect fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled bovine serum albumin (FITC-BSA) diluted in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) buffer solution. Different concentrations of the buffer media were studied herein. Fluorescence intensity images show that the buffer concentration of 4 mM is more appropriate than all the other ones. The sample of FITC-BSA with an initial concentration of $10{\mu}M$ in the 4 mM PBS solution increases its concentration at the desired region by up to 50 times within 30 min, demonstrating the results in this investigation.

  • Cd-Pb thin films were electrodeposited from a diluted chloride solution using stainless steel rotating disc electrode. The linear sweep voltammograms of the single metallic ions show that electrodeposition of these ions was mass transfer control due to the plateau observed for different rotations at concentration (50 and 200 ppm). The voltammograms of binary system elucidate that electrodeposition process always start at cathodic potential located between the potential of individual metals. Currents transients measurements, anodic linear sweep voltammetry (ALSV) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to characterize the electrocryatalization process and morphology of thin films. ALSV profiles show a differentiation for the dissolution process of individual metals and binary system. Two peaks of dissolution Cd-Pb film were observed for the binary system with different metal ion concentration ratios. The model of Scharifker and Hills was used to analyze the current transients and it revealed that Cd-Pb electrocrystalization processes at low concentration is governed by three-dimensional progressive nucleation controlled by diffusion, while at higher concentration starts as a progressive nucleation then switch to instantaneous nucleation process. AFM images reveal that Cd-Pb film electrodeposited at low concentration is more roughness than Cd-Pb film electrodeposited at high concentrated solution.
