  • One of the major issues in current on-demand routing protocols for ad hoc networks is the high resource consumed by route discovery traffic. In these protocols, flooding is typically used by the source to broadcast a route request (RREQ) packet in search of a route to the destination. Such network-wide flooding potentially disturbs many nodes unnecessarily by querying more nodes than is actually necessary, leading to rapid exhaustion of valuable network resources such as wireless bandwidth and battery power. In this paper, a simple optimization technique for efficient route discovery is proposed. The technique proposed herein is location-based and can be used in conjunction with the existing Location-Aided Routing (LAR) scheme to further reduce the route discovery overhead. A unique feature of our technique not found in LAR and most other protocols is the selective use of unicast instead of broadcast for route request/query transmission made possible by a novel reuse of routing and location information. We refer to this new optimization as the UNIQUE (UNIcast QUEry) technique. This paper studies the efficacy of UNIQUE by applying it to the route discovery of the Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) protocol. In addition, a comparative study is made with a DSR protocol optimized with only LAR. The results show that UNIQUE could further reduce the overall routing overhead by as much as 58% under highly mobile conditions. With less congestion caused by routing traffic, the data packet delivery performance also improves in terms of end-to-end delay and the number of data packets successfully delivered to their destinations.

  • Ensuring both product quality and reducing material cost are important issue for the design of the piping system of an air conditioner outdoor unit. This paper describes a shape optimization that achieves mass reduction of an air conditioner piping system while satisfying two design constraints on resonance avoidance and the maximum stress in the pipes. In order to obtain optimized design results with various analysis fields considered simultaneously, an automated multidisciplinary analysis system was constructed using PIAnO v.2.4, a commercial process integration and design optimization(PIDO) tool. As the first step of the automated analysis system, a finite element model is automatically generated corresponding to the specified shape of the pipes using a morphing technique included in HyperMesh. Then, the performance indices representing various design requirements (e.g. natural frequency, maximum stress and pipe mass) are obtained from the finite element analyses using appropriate computer-aided engineering(CAE) tools. A sequential approximate optimization(SAO) method was employed to effectively obtain the optimum design. As a result, the pipe mass was reduced by 18 % compared with that of an initial design while all the constraints were satisfied.

  • Structural optimization is widely adopted in the design of structures with the development of computer aided design and computer technique recently. By applying the structural optimization in the last decades, designers have gained the design scheme of structures more feasibly and easily. In this paper, an optimal design of one 30-story high rise steel structure is performed considering material non-linearity. Based on finite element analysis and adaptive simulated annealing algorithm, the optimal weight of structure is derived under constraints of allowable yield stress, shear stress and serviceability.

  • Car seat is one the most important element to make comfortable drivability. It can absorb the impact or vibration during driving state. In addition to those factors, it is needed to have enough strength for passenger safety. From energy efficiency and environmental point of view lighter passenger car seat frame becomes hot issue in the auto industry. In this paper, weight optimization methodology is investigated for commercial car seat frame using CAE. Optimized designs for seat frame are developed using commercially available finite element code(ANSYS) and design of experiment method. At first, car seat frame is modelled using 3-D computer aided design tool(CATIA) and simplified for finite element modelling. Finite element analysis is carried out for the case of FMVSS 202 Head Restraint test to check the strength of the original seat frame. Two base brackets are selected as optimized elements that are the heaviest parts in the seat frame. After finite element analysis for the brackets with similar load condition to the previous test optimization technique is applied for 10% to 50% weight reduction. Design of experiment is utilized to obtain optimization design for the bracket based on the modified 50% weight reduction model in which outer shape of the bracket is conserved. Weight optimization models result in the decrease of the strength in spite of weight reduction. The more design points should be considered to get better optimized model. The more advanced optimization technique may be utilized for more parts of the seat frame to increase whole seat frame characteristics in the future.

  • The mechanism synthesis methods, graphical, analytical and computer-aided technique have been proposed for selecting and scaling mechanical system. According to developing computation tools, mechanism could be synthesized much faster and more correct than previous analytical ways by improved techniques. In this paper, the improved synthesis method is proposed to solve body guidance synthesis problem. To perform the mechanism synthesis for body guidance, a planar linkage is modeled as a set of free three bushings located in design space. The values of bushing stiffness and x, y position of bushings yielding a desired functional requirement related to input motion are found by using an optimization technique.

  • From the engineering point of view, a synthesis as well as an analysis technique is explored to search for the improved design of grillage which is common in ship structure. As an approximate analysis method for the grillage, an interaction reaction method is developed and compared with the finite element method. It is found that the discrepancy between these two methods is so negligible that the percent method could be used effectively for the grillage analysis. As an optimization technique, a feasible direction method could be used is combined with the intersection reaction method in order to design a minimum weight optimal grillage. The feasible direction method shows a good numerical performance although it requires more calculation times compared with the direct search method. Finally, the application of multiple objective optimization method to grillage is investigated in order to resolve conflicts existed between the multiple objectives which is a common characteristic of structure design problem. Goal programming method is extended to handle a nonlinear property of constraints and objective functions. It seems that the nonlinear goal programming could help not only to establish a relative importance of each objective, but also enable the designer to choose the best combination of design variables.

  • For the micro-lithography using a KrF excimer laser beam(λ=0.248${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) a mirror system consisting of four spherical surfaces with reduction magnification 5$\times$ is designed. Initially the aplanat condition of the mirror system is considered. And for the further improved performance of the system the distortion free condition and flat field condition within Seidel 3rd order aberrations are added to the above condition. During the process of designing the computer-aided optimization technique is extensively employed. The spherical aberration, coma, field curvature and distortion of the optimized four-spherical mirror system are removed to the diffraction limit, and residual astigmatism and off-axial vignetting are not corrected enough.

  • A general equation by which the Hessian matrix of an error function can be determined directly, has been derived. It was verified to be useful in optimization processes that include the Hessian matrix. A few design examples had shown that this method had accelerated the processes of finding the minimums. The advantage of this technique is the possibility of optimizing functions that composed of both the phases and magnitudes.

  • In this paper, object of experiment is to study on the effect parameters to obtain optimal surface roughness in face turning. Surface roughness is significantly important to be high quality of parts produced by turning process. For this purpose, the optimization of cutting parameters for face turning operation is investigated applying the Taguchi method. An orthogonal array, signal-to-noise, and the analysis of variance are employed to evaluate effect of cutting parameters for face turning. Also confirmation tests were performed to make a comparison between the results predicted from the mentioned correlations and the theoretical results. Cutting experiment is performed without cutting fluid using coated tungsten carbide insert about workpiece of SM45C. And regression analysis technique has been used to study the effects of the cutting parameters.

  • There has been much advancement in the field of aerial cameras for geographical features with the help of drones, image processing power and computer aided optical programs. In this study, we propose a new optical lens design technique which minimizes the amount of ‘the third order Seidel aberration’ for enhancing MTF. In addition, we suggest a new optical lens design which stabilizes the mass-production yield through R.S.M and has robustness secure through the Taguchi method. Eventually, the image processing algorithm of stereo matching is implemented in order to evaluate whether the proposed lens design result meets adequate specifications for the use of dual aerial photographs or not. This paper provides good guidance for the optical design by development of experiments.
