  • Due to the complexity of many of the existing statistical problems found in working with envirommental copmuter simulations (Monte Carlo)have proved to be very informative. However, due to the various types of environmental data(thus the different type of distributions) one can no longer perform simulations based solely upon normal data. So in anticipating this problem, this paper outlines the computer software to generate variates from the various specified dis-tributions.

  • Pneumatic control system has been used mainly for endpoint position control because of the compressibility, viscosity and low output stiffness of air which causes nonlinear flow characteristics. In this paper, pneumatic position control algorithms using fuzzy rule were developed to achieve faster and more stable response than conventional PI control algorithm. The performances of the proposed algorithms were compared by computer simulations with them of PI controller. From those simulations it was shown that the proposed algorithms are more efficient about settling time, steady state error and overshoot than PI control algorithm.

  • This paper presents a position control of ultra-precision machine tool post using piezoelectric material. A stack-type piezoelectric actuator is employed in a hinge-type tool holder. An assumed linear transfer function of the practical nonlinear plant is established through the comparison of transfer functions and step responses in the experiments and the simulations. Several types of feedforward/feedback controllers are designed via computer simulations using the assumed linear transfer function, The position tracking control experiments are undertaken to show the control efficiency of each controller.

  • This paper discusses dynamic characteristics of motion of a pair of multi-degrees of freedom robot fingers executing grasp of a rigid object and controlling its orientation with the aid of rolling contacts. In particular, the discussions are focused on a problem of gain-tuning of sensory feedback signals proposed from the viewpoint of sensorymotor coordination, which consist of a feedforward term, a feedback term for controlling rotational moment of the object, and another term for controlling its rotational angle. It is found through computer simulations of the overall fingersobject dynamics subject to rolling contact constraints that some dynamic characteristics of torque-angular velocity relation may play an important role likely as reported by experimental results in muscle physiology and therefore selection of damping gains in angular velocity feedback depending on the guess of object mass is crucial. Finally, a guidance of gain-tuning in each feedback term is suggested and its validity is discussed by various computer simulations.

  • This paper proposes a new grid-tied power converter for battery energy storage, which is composed of a 2-stage DC-DC converter and a PWM inverter. The 2-stage DC-DC converter is composed of an LLC resonant converter connected in cascade with a 2-quadrant hybrid-switching chopper. The LLC resonant converter operates in constant duty ratio, while the 2-quadrant hybrid-switching chopper operates in variable duty ratio for voltage regulation. The operation of proposed system was verified through computer simulations. Based on computer simulations, a hardware prototype was built and tested to confirm the technical feasibility of proposed system. The proposed system could have relatively higher efficiency and smaller size than the existing system.

  • This paper proposes a new method for dynamic modeling of electrorheological(ER) damper considering fluid compressibility. After describing configuration and operating principle of the ER damper, a quasi-static modeling of the ER damper is conducted on the basis of Bingham model of ER fluid. Subsequently, the dynamic model for describing the ER damper considering compressibility of ER fluid and gas chamber is obtained using the lumped parameter method. This method includes dynamic motions of annular duct, upper chamber, lower chamber and connecting pipe. The hysteresis behavior of the ER damper is evaluated through computer simulations and compared with experimental results. In addition, the hysteresis behavior due to the compressibility of ER fluid and gas chamber is investigated through computer simulations.

  • An efficient sampling method of computer simulation is reviewed. Using the method, several thermodynamic states can be investigated at a time in a single simulation. It is due to the ability of the method to explore the relevant parts of configuration space equally for every state being investigated. The method can be used in simulations of complex systems such as biopolymers which are still greatly hampered by the multi-minima problem. In this article I present a brief theoretical review of the method and illustrate how to realize it in the simulations.

  • We analyze the linear equalizers used in optically amplified on-off-keyed (OOK) systems to combat chromatic dispersion (CD) and polarization mode dispersion (PMD), and we derive the mathematical minimum mean squared error (MMSE) performance of these equalizers. Currently, the MMSE linear equalizer for optical OOK systems is obtained by simulations using adaptive approaches such as least mean squared (LMS) or constant modulus algorithm (CMA), but no theoretical studies on the optimal solutions for these equalizers have been performed. We model the optical OOK systems as square-law nonlinear channels and compute the MMSE equalizer coefficients directly from the estimated optical channel, signal power, and optical noise variance. The accuracy of the calculated MMSE equalizer coefficients and MMSE performance has been verified by simulations using adaptive algorithms.

  • We perform two kinds of computer simulations on polydisperse hard-sphere systems; a molecular-dynamics simulation on atomic systems and a Brownian-dynamics simulation on colloidal suspensions. Analyses of the mean square displacement, the radial distribution function, and the pressure suggest that there exist three phase regions, a liquid phase region, a metastable phase region, and a crystal phase region, where the freezing and melting points are shifted to the values higher than in monodisperse case. It is also shown that the long-time behavior of colloidal suspensions is exactly the same as that of atomic systems.

  • In this paper, research on the mold design of motor housing produced by the HPDC process was conducted using computer simulations and experiments. Recently, automobile parts have been required to be light and have high strength. The die casting process was used to manufacture automotive motor housings. In the die casting process, the control of casting defects is very important. However, it has usually depended on the experience of the foundry engineer. For the analysis of the manufacturing process of motor housing, the finite element method is applied. Through the simulations using commercial software, the filling pattern and product defects could be confirmed. The analysis results obtained from the filling behavior of the casting process agreed with the experimental results. The computer simulation results of filling behavior were reflected in the optimal mold design of motor housing.
