Recent trend of popularity of CAE(Computer Aided Engineering) tools and its availability, partly contributed by significant price reduction of H/W and SW, makes us believe CAE has already established terra firma as de jure tools, enablint the design improvement in the manufacturing am. However, if your jobs are required to be working closely with engineers located in the front line of manufacturing site, CAE is observed far from popularity, still being regarded as exclusive tools for engineers holding advanced degrees. Conventional methodologies depending on knowledge that was accumulated thorough trial and errors, depending primarily on engineering tables and formulas or proprietary know-how, are preferred as the de factor standard under the roof of contemporary development shops. Samsung camera, having stared its business since early 、80, has accumulated enough technological strength to compete in the world market. As today's consumers demand more sophisticated featured-lighter weight, built-in multi zoom and miniature size fitting in the palm-from camera manufacturer, so should Samsung camera respond to ever-delicate consumer's needs with great flexibility. Consequently conventional designers, without sophisticated analytical tools, with encounter solving the critical design factors that have never been treated as seriousness-marginal safety factors induced by reduced size of parts. In the study, CAE results of boss and gears were demonstrated as examples, which confirms the facts that the simple analysis done by front line designers, can bring distinguishable effects on the potential improvements of design and on the consequential influences on the future design process-simulation before actual tooling and productions.
In the product design process computer-aided engineering and optimization tolls are widely utilized in order to reduce the total development time and cost. Since several simulation tools are involved in the process, information losses, omissions, or errors are common and the importance of seamless information exchange among the tools has been increased. In this work, ISO STEP standards are adopted to represent the neutral format for structural analysis and optimization. The schema of AP209 defined the information of finite element analysis is used and the new schema is proposed to describe the information of structural optimization based on the STEP methodology. The schema is implemented by EXPRESS, information modeling language, and ST-Developer is employed to generate C++ classes and STEP Rose Library by using the schema denoted. To substantiate the proposed approach, the information access interfaces of the finite element modeling software (FEMAP), structural optimization software(GENESIS) and in-house topology optimization program are developed. Examples are shown to validate the information exchange of finite element analysis and structural optimization using STEP standards.
Recently three-dimensional (3-D) die design and production process has been widely introduced into the tooling shops of automotive manufacturers to reduce time-to-production of brand-new automobiles. 3-D solid models created in CAD systems are used not only for various simulations for design verification, but also for NC tool path generation to machine dies and their Styrofoam patterns. However, a lot of time and cost will be required to build solid models for dies if designers use only the generalized modeling capabilities of commercial 3-D CAD systems. To solve this problem, it is necessary to customize 3-D CAD system for the specific die design and manufacturing process. This paper describes a dedicated 3-D CAD system based on Unigraphics for die design for automotive body panels. The system provides not only 3-D design capabilities, but also standard part libraries, to enhance design productivity. The design process modeling technology has been introduced to facilitate redesign of the die for the modified panel. By introducing this system, dies can be designed more rapidly in the 3-D space, and their solid data can be directly transferred to CAM tools for NC tool path generation and simulation tools for virtual manufacturing.
The industrial environment for shipbuilding in 21st century requires increase in few type of ships and marine structures, international cooperation and globalization, while virtual enterprise environment is rapidly establishing. On the other hand, more and more efforts will be spent on internet based distributed and collaborative environment rather than being spent on unit level automations such as CAD, CAM and CAE, and the link between them. Recent internet technology and information technology in heterogeneous environment are being applied in shipbuilding industry as well as in other industries. While these technology are rapidly adopted in major shipyards, many small and medium-sized shipyards does not have enough resources to introduce system designed for large enterprise. In this paper, a prototype of Internet technology based basic planning system is implemented for the small and medium sized shipyards based on the internet technology and concurrent engineering concept. First, the system is designed from the user requirements. Then standardized development environment and tools are selected. These tools are used for defining and evaluating core application technologies for the system development. This can guarantee the survival of small and medium-sized shipyards in 21st century industrial environment.
Parametric modeling is one of BIM's characteristics and BIM have being utilized for constructability analysis, energy efficiency analysis, and so on in diverse construction field. However, parametric information's interoperation is not solved until now because different BIM tools have specific algorithm and methods to generate geometric information. To solve the problem, previous research suggested IFC-XML methodology. In this paper, authors studied connections between IFC-XML structure and script-based modeling commends to make libraries in commercial BIM tools such as ArchiCAD$^{TM}$ and Digital Project$^{TM}$. In addition, they made commends mapping tables to exchange geometry information of architectural components. Moreover, mapping system was developed to certify the mapping tables which is classified modeling commends. Finally, translated architectural component model was confirmed using exchanged geometry information in browser.
Presented in the paper is a reservation based dispatching rule to achieve the on-time delivery in system LSI (large scale integrated circuit) semiconductor fabrication (FAB) with urgent orders. Using the proposed reservation based dispatching rule, urgent lots can be processed without waiting in a queue. It is possible to achieve the on-time delivery of urgent orders by reserving a proper tool for the next step in advance while urgent lots are being processed at the previous step. It can cause, however, tardiness of normal lots, because the proposed rule assign urgent lots first. To solve this problem, the proposed rule tries to find the best tool for the reservation in the tool group, which can minimize idle time, and the reservation rule is applied at all tools except for photolithography tools (bottleneck). $MOZART^{(R)}$ which is developed by VMS solutions are used for simulation experiments. The experimentation results show that the reservation based dispatching rule can achieve the on-time delivery of normal lots as well as urgent lots.
Recently, an unprecedented emerging infectious disease has rapidly spread, causing a global shortage of wards. Although various temporary beds have appeared, the supply of wards specializing in infectious diseases is required. Negative pressure isolation wards should maintain their function even after an earthquake. However, the current seismic design standards do not guarantee the negative pressure isolation wards' operational (OP) performance level. For this reason, some are not included in the design target even though they are non-structural elements that require seismic design. Also, the details of non-structural elements are usually determined during the construction phase. It is often necessary to complete the stability review and reinforcement design for non-structural elements within a short period. Against this background, enhanced performance objectives were set to guarantee the OP non-structural performance level, and a computerized tool was developed to quickly perform the seismic design of non-structural elements in the negative pressure isolation wards. This study created a spreadsheet-based computer tool that reflects the components, installation spacing, and design procedures of non-structural elements. Seismic performance review and design of the example non-structural elements were conducted using the computerized tool. The strength of some components was not sufficient, and it was reinforced. As a result, the time and effort required for strength evaluation, displacement evaluation, and reinforcement design were reduced through computerized tools.
The swept volume, the region of a moving object, is applied in many fields such as valid paths for motions of tools, visualization in robot paths and interference tests for parts assembling or disjointing. The shape of a swept volume depends on an generators computed with normal vectors of an object and velocity vectors of a motion. Although free-from surfaces are widely used to represent geometric models in CAD, computing the generators for a free-form object is a formidable task. Previous approaches exploit the closed form expressions of generators but limited to planer or quadric faces. In this paper, we propose the algorithm to compute swept volumes generated by free-form objects in screw motions. For the algorithm a tracing method is applied to the computation of generators. It considers curvatures of surfaces of an object to increase the computational accuracy. We implemented our algorithm in the CATIA V.5 environment to test the validity of our algorithm and to generate examples.
An approach to providing computational support with an expert shell is discussed with the scope of an industrial wire harness design, especially at a manufacturing stage. Key issues include the development of an architecture that supports a frequent design change among engineers associated with different parts of the wiring design process and the development of hierarchical representations that capture the different characteristics (e.g., connectivity, configuration) of the harnesses. The abstraction of design information results in features, while the abstraction of drawing elements leads to the definition of objects. These abstractions are essential for efficient transactions among people and computer tools in a domain that involves numerous interacting constraints. In this paper the strategy for the problem decomposition, the definition of features, and the ways in which features are shared by various operations and design changes, are discussed. We conclude with a discussion of some of the issues raised by the project and the steps underway to address them.
An optimal robust design methodology has been developed to minimize the warpage in a decorating panel of monitor molded by the plastic injection. For the associated methodology, the Taguchi's Design Of Experiment (DOE) based on orthogonal arrays and Signal-to-Noise Ratio is combined with commercial simulation tools f3r injection molding. An optimal robust design solution is statistically resulted from the computational simulation. The related experiment was done for evaluations of the warpage in the decorating panel part of monitor. This research showed that the warpage under the applied optimal design conditions was comparatively reduced.
