  • A method for automatic extraction of 2-dimensional finite element connectivities by searching the shortest closed path from a certain node to the starting node was developed. Only the best path among the possible paths was probed. The uniqueness and validity of the extracted path were examined. The proposed method was proved to be complete. Examples show that the proposed method can extract elements exactly from the irregular mesh which can not be handled easily by the conventional automatic mesh generation.

  • In this paper, three dimensional linear conforming variable-finite elements are presented with the aid of a smoothed integration (a class of stabilized conforming nodal integration), for mnltiscale mechanics problems. These elements meet the desirable properties of an interpolation such as the Kronecker delta condition, the partition of unity condition and the positiveness of interpolation function. The necessary condition of linear exactness is fully relaxed by employing the smoothed integration, which renders us to meet the linear exactness in a straightforward manner. This novel element description extend the category of the conventional finite elements space to ration type function space and give the flexibility on the number of nodes of element which are fixed in the conventional finite elements. Several examples are provided to show the convergence and the accuracy of the proposed elements, and to demonstrate their potential with emphasis on the multiscale mechanics problems such as global/local analysis, nonmatching contact problems, and modeling of composite material with defects.

  • As economic rapid growth, large structures are damaged by defects from design and construction process of the formation and environments. Therefore, safety diagnosis and monitoring skills are bringing importance into relief and legislate for safety diagnosis of large structures. However, the existing monitoring systems are difficult by using wire cable because of cost, error of date, location, revise. In this paper, wireless sensor network which are accelerator, temperature sensor system using ubiquitous had been field test on Sea-Hea Grand bridge. We compare accelerator, temperature sensor system with wire and wireless sensor network.

  • The variable node plate bending element, ie, the element with one or two additional mid-side nodes is used in the analysis of mat foundation to generate the nearly ideal grid model in which more nodes are defined near the column location. The plate bending element used in this study is the one based on Mindlin/Reissner plate theory with substitute shear strain field and the nodal stresses of that element are obtained by the local smoothing technique. The interaction of the soil material with the mat foundation is modeled with Winkler springs connected to the nodal points in the mat model. The vertical stiffness of the soil material are represented in terms of a modulus of subgrade reaction and are computed in the same way as to the computation of consistent nodal force of uniform surface loading. Several mesh schemes were proposed and tested to find the most suitable scheme for mat foundation analysis.

  • In this paper, we propose a parallel collaborative sphere decoder with a scalable architecture promising quasi-maximum likelyhood performance with a relatively small amount of computational resources. This design offers a hardware-friendly algorithm using a modified node operation through fixing the variable complexity of the critical path caused by the sequential nature of the conventional sphere decoder (SD). It also reduces the computational complexity compared to the fixed-complexity sphere decoder (FSD) algorithm by tree pruning using collaboratively operated node operators. A Monte Carlo simulation shows that our proposed design can be implemented using only half the parallel operators compared to the approach using an ideal fully parallel scheme such as FSD, with only about a 7% increase of the normalized decoding time for MIMO dimensions of $16{\times}16$ with 16-QAM modulation.

  • The post-peak analysis of concrete structures is carried out using a nine-node Reissner-Mindlin(RM) shell element which is formulated by using degenerated solid concepts. In order to avoid element deficiencies inherited in the standard RM shell element, assumed strains are adopted in the present shell element. A microscopic material model is adopted to represent the inelastic characteristic of concrete material. In particular, a concrete softening model is introduced to this material model. The arc-length control method is used to trace the post-peak behaviour of concrete structures. From the numerical test of the single-edge-notched beam, the present shell element shows a reasonable agreement with experimental data.

  • A versatile flat shell element has been developed by combining a membrane element with drilling degree-of-freedom and a plate bending element. This element is formulated by the enhanced displacement field with the additional non-conforming displacement modes. Thus the element possesses six degrees-of-freedom (DOF) per node which permits an easy connection to other six DOF elements as well as the improvement of the element behavior. In plate bending part, this element is established by the combined use of the addition of non-conforming modes, the reduced (or selective) integration scheme, and the construction of the substitute shear strain fields. The achieved improvement may be attributable to the fact that the merits of these individual techniques are merged into the new element in a complementary manner. In membrane part, this element shows better membrane behavior as the nonconforming displacement mode is added to drilling mode.

  • Application of the flat shell element with drilling D.O.F to linear buckling analysis of thin-walled structures is presented in this paper. The shell element has been developed basically by combining a membrane element with drilling D.O.F. and Mindlin plate bending element. Thus, the shell element possesses six degrees-of-freedom per node which, in addition to improvement of the element behavior, permits an easy connection to other six degrees-of-freedom per node elements(CLS, Choi and Lee, 1995). Accordingly, structures like folded plate and stiffened shell structure, for which it is hard to find the analytical solutions, can be analyzed using these developed flat shell elements. In this paper, linear buckling analysis of thin-walled structures like folded plate structures using the shell elements(CLS) with drilling D.O.F. to be formulated and then fulfilled. Subsequently, buckling modes and the critical loads can be output. Finally. finite element solutions for linear buckling analysis of folded plate structures are compared with available analytic solutions and other researcher's results.

  • According to the relative stiffness between the half-space and plate or loading condition, some parts of the plate can be separated from the half-space. The finite element procedure to determine the contact area by considering the distribution of contact pressure between plate and the elastic half-space is developed. The vertical surface displacements of the elastic half-space can be obtained through the integrations of the Boussinesq's solution for a point load. The rectangular plate on the elastic half-space is modeled by the 8-node rectangular and 6-node triangular elements and the Mindlin plate theory is used in oder to consider the transverse shear effect. In this study, the contact area may be determined approximately by the analysis with rectangular elements. From this results, the mesh pattern is modified by using triangular and rectangular elements. The contact area can be determined by the new mesh pattern with a relatively sufficient accuracy.

  • The boundary/finite element analysis for the seismic wave amplifications due to nonhomogeneous alluvial deposits was performed in this study. For numerical analysis, the homogeneous linear elastic soil half-space was modeled by using the 3-node isoparametric boundary elements and the inhomogeneous alluvial deposit was modeled by using the 8-node isoparametric finite elements. The two elements at interface were coupled together by the equilibrium condition of the tractions and the compatibility condition of the displacements. As a prarmetric variable, the incident angle and the dimensionsless frequency of the SH, P and SV-waves and the shear wave velocity ratio and the mass density ratio between the half-space and the alluvial deposit were selected.
