  • The development of computer-integrated design systems that fully support structural design process needs the computerization of structural design at the preliminary design stage. The objective of this paper is to develop a prototype system for preliminary design of reinforced concrete structures. This study focuses on the development of a natural design process oriented GUI(Graphic User Interface) and a representation of an experienced knowledge. The prototype system has been currently implemented using the objected-oriented programming concepts, the program language(i.e.,Visual C++) and the expert shell(i.e., Intelligent Rules Element).

  • Drift design using resizing techniques can be a very practical method in drift design of high-rise buildings since it cannot require sensitivity analysis and structural re-analysis. Resizing techniques has used the cross sectional areas as design variable and supposed that displacement participation factors are inversely proportional to structural weights. Efficiency of resizing techniques based on displacement participation factors may depend on proper selection of sectional properties as design variables. In this study, two different drift design methods with the different sectional properties as design variables are presented and applied to a 20-story structure.

  • The basic rules and principles for designing structures with composite materials are briefly and intensively presented. The proposed design steps are explained. For preliminary design, use of quasi-isotropic properties is proposed. The validity of this proposal will be reported by separate papers.

  • An optimal robust design methodology has been developed to minimize the warpage in a decorating panel of monitor molded by the plastic injection. For the associated methodology, the Taguchi's Design Of Experiment (DOE) based on orthogonal arrays and Signal-to-Noise Ratio is combined with commercial simulation tools f3r injection molding. An optimal robust design solution is statistically resulted from the computational simulation. The related experiment was done for evaluations of the warpage in the decorating panel part of monitor. This research showed that the warpage under the applied optimal design conditions was comparatively reduced.

  • An optimized bidet nozzle design to form the required swirl water jet is proposed with the help of numerical analysis. The bidet can do the cleaning process of human body by water injection and the speed/pressure/injection angle/magnitude of swirl intensity of water jet determine the cleaning capability and personal subjective feeling. The objective of this research is to design optimal water injection nozzle to make stable swirl intensity. The effect of individual design variables are analyzed from the basic design and the final design is deduced to make high performance water jet within the pre-determined operation conditions.

  • Cross-flow fans are widely used in various applications, due to their large capacity of mass flow and size compactness. The flow field of the cross-flow fan is, however, complex and has many design parameters. Thus, the general design guide has not been sufficiently established yet and the design strategies of cross-flow fans have been based on experiments. In the present study, the performance and their two-dimensional flow characteristics are numerically analyzed by using the STAR-CD(commercial computational fluid dynamics code). The simulation is done by varying the several design parameters such as the impeller blade shapes and the gap between the stabilizer and impeller. The computational results are compared with the experimental data at the fan outlet region. Finally some helpful guides for the optimum design of cross-flow fans are proposed.

  • Web development has multidisciplinary features involving diverse team members. Owing to the diverse backgrounds, however, there may be communication problems among web team members, especially between designers and programmers. Programmers often use a graphical modeling notation to communicate their designs. The graphical modeling concepts can also be helpful to designers, but most designers generally find graphical modeling notations hard to understand. We, therefore, propose an interactive computer-aided collaborative web design system including revised web graphical model notations to improve communication between web designers and programmers. We have designed and implemented a computational prototype to validate the approach and illustrate how the prototype works using concrete examples.

  • Synectics is one of several techniques used to enhance brainstorming by taking a more active role and introducing metaphor and structure into the process. It is unclear at what level of specificity this should be formulated as a pattern. This thesis reviews recent computational as well as experimental work on analogical reasoning based on synectics. New results regarding information processing of analogical reasoning stages, major computational models and recent attempts to compare these models are reviewed. Computational models are also discussed in the computational as well as cognitive psychology perspectives. Future directions in analogical reasoning research are proposed. The following import is the need to accommodate the typology and normal assessment in the concrete circumstances where actual reasoning and problem solving take place. In order to get to this end, we used computational models by Thagard who take the stand of ‘Computational Philosophy of Science’, which assumes ‘Weak AI’ to explicate what constitute the very pecularity of Analogical Reasoning.
