The rapid growth of the economy recently gas led to increasing social needs for large scaled structures, such as high-rise buildings and long span bridges. In building these large-scaled structures the trend has been to construct foundations beating on or in rock masses in order to ensure stability and serviceability of the structure under several significant loads. However. when designing the drilled shaft foundation socketed in rock masses in Korea, the bearing capacity for the pier used to be determined by using the empirical expression, which depends on the compressive strength of the rock, or presumable bearing capacity recommended on foreign references or manuals. In this study, numerical analyses are used to trace rock-socketed pile behavior and are made alike with pile load test result in field. The result of this numerical analyses study have shown that following factors have a significant influence on the load capacity and settlement of the pier. Significant influence first factor of the geometry of the socket as defined by the length to diameter ratio. Second factor of the modulus of the rock both around the socket and below the base. third factor of the condition of the end of the pier with respect to the removal of drill cuttings and other loose material from the bottom of the socket.
This study aims to produce dolomitic hydraulic lime (D-NHL) using domestic low grade dolomitic limestone and to determine the effect of adding blast furnace slag (BFS) and gypsum as part of an investigation of the hydration properties of D-NHL to increase the mechanical properties. The main mineral phases of D-NHL as a hydraulic lime binder were $Ca(OH)_2$, $Mg(OH)_2$, $C_2S$, $C_3S$, and MgO residues. $Ca(OH)_2$ transformed into $CaCO_3$ in D-NHL paste over the period of 28 days, but the carbonation of $Mg(OH)_2$ and the hydration of $C_2S$ did not occur until hydration, after 28 days. Through an investigation of the hydration properties of D-NHL pastes mixed with BFS and gypsum, Al-based compounds such as calcium aluminate hydrates ($C_4AH_{13}$) and ettringite were observed at early hydration time. The compressive strength was improved due to the increased quantities of these hydration products. These results show that good performance results from the application of dolomitic hydraulic lime and that a high value product can be made from domestic waste materials.
This study is focusing on mixing the foamed concrete incorporated by waste expanded polystyrene(W-EPS), investigating the physical properties and offering a proper quality control method to the field engineers. Two types of W-EPS (type A and type B) were studied. Type A (B) had globular (crushed) shape and diameter of 3-5 (1-2) mm. The results show that the flow was suddenly reduced with increasing mixing quantity of two types, but it satisfies KS F 4039 until 60 % of mixing rate. In general, the absorption rate was suddenly reduced with increased mixing quantity of two types especially, in type A. Apparent specific gravity was 0.36∼0.53 and reduced with increasing mixing quantify of type A. But it increased in case of type B. Compressive strength and heat conduction rate increased with mixing with W-EPS than non-mixing W-EPS but reduced with mixing too much W-EPS. Based ong the results, it is believed that mixing with W-EPS can improve the recycle of industrial wastes and produce the high quality foamed concrete.
For a performance-based design of structural walls, it is necessary to develop a rational design method for determining the length and detail of boundary confinement so as to satisfy the given ductility demand. In the present study, the curvature capacity of a structural wall with boundary confinement was estimated considering the effects of various design parameters. The curvature demand of the plastic hinge corresponding to the given design displacement was also determined. By equalizing the curvature capacity to the demand, a design method for determining the length of boundary confinement, was developed. According to the design method, the length of boundary confinement increases as axial compressive load and design displacement increase, and as concrete strength, wall thickness, amount of lateral reinforcement and aspect ratio decrease. A study was performed on details for effective lateral confinement of walls with rectangular cross-section. Based on the findings, design guidelines on spacings of ties and cross-ties were proposed.
When the columns of existing RC structures are repaired with FRP composites, the core concrete of the columns is confined by both materials of steel spirals (or steel hoops) and FRP composites because the FRP composites wrap the existing columns which have been already confined with steel spirals or hoops. As the stress-strain curves of steel and fiber are different to each other, the behavior of concrete columns confined with both steel spiral and FRP composites is also different to that of concrete columns confined with only steel spiral or FRP composites. Twenty four RC cylinders were tested in order to observe the behavior of RC cylinders confined with both materials. The observed results of the test showed that the behavior of the test cylinders confined with both materials was quite different to that of cylinders confined with only one material.
This study was evaluated that fundamental quality properties in the mortar level, as part of a basic study for development of fiber reinforced concrete using basalt fiber. Mortar mixtures used in the experiments used the mortar using cement only and high volume fly ash mortar using fly ash of 50%, was evaluated by comparison. As a experiments results, high volume fly ash mortar using 50% fly ash was effective for improving fiber dispersibility than mortar using cement only, accordingly, it showed that fiber aggregation phenomenon has been greatly reduced. In addition, if the fly ash used much more than 50%, the compressive strength has been shown to decrease of about 30%, fiber length and mixing ratio of basalt fiber was found to have a greater effect on flow properties than mechanical properties.

Investigating the microstructure of hardened cement mixtures with the aid of advanced technology will help the concrete industry to develop appropriate binders for durable building materials. In this paper, morphological, mineralogical and thermogravimetric analyses of autoclave-cured mixtures incorporating ground dune sand and ground granulated blast furnace slag as partial cementing materials were investigated. The microstructure analyses of hydrated products were conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), differential thermal analysis (DTA), thermo-graphic analysis (TGA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The SEM and EDX results demonstrated the formation of thin plate-like calcium silicate hydrate plates and a compacted microstructure. The DTA and TGA analyses revealed that the calcium hydroxide generated from the hydration binder materials was consumed during the secondary pozzolanic reaction. Residual crystalline silica was observed from the XRD analysis of all of the blended mixtures, indicating the presence of excess silica. A good correlation was observed between the compressive strength of the blended mixtures and the CaO/$SiO_2$ ratio of the binder materials.
The purpose of this dissertation was to investigate the effect of mineral admixtures, such as fly ash, blast furnace slag powder, meta kaolin and silica fume, on the basic properties and durability of crushed sand shotcrete, selecting a series of shotcrete mixtures with a variable admixture. Compressive strength increased as the content of mineral admixtures increased, specially it was the most effective when using meta kaolin both at sample specimen and core after shotcreting. Rapid chloride ion permeability test and sulfuric acid resistance test showed that both durability increased as the substitute rate of mineral admixture increased. In air void analysis with image analysis, the targeted the spacing factor and specific surface were not satisfied because air-entrained agent was not used.
The longitudinal axial strain in the plastic hinge region of reinforced concrete (RC) columns influences on the structural behavior of RC structures subjected to reversed cyclic loading. This strain decreases the effective compressive strength of concrete and increases the lateral displacements between stories by causing the elongation of member length. This paper investigated the effects of the axial force on the elongation of a RC member by using a sectional analysis of RC members. The analytical and experimental results indicated that the axial force decreased the axial strain in the plastic hinge region of RC columns. In this study, a model was proposed to predict the axial strain of RC columns. The proposed model considering the effects of axial force ratio consisted of three path types ; Path 1-loading region, Path 2-unloading region, and Path 3-reversing cyclic loading region. The axal strains predicted by the proposed model were compared with the test results of RC columns with various axial force ratios, and agreed reasonably with the observed longitudinal strains.
In this study we experimentally evaluated an impact resistant performance of fiber reinforced concrete in the moment of explosion by high-velocity projectile with emulsion explosive. To assess the impact resistance, we conducted the impact test of high-velocity projectile which reaches an impact speed of 350 m/s and the experiment of contact exploding emulsion explosive. As a result, bending and tensile performance depending on type of PVA, PE fiber (polyvinyl alcohol fiber, polyethylene fiber) and steel fiber affects destruction of rear side in the form of spalling. Destroying the backside of the concrete compressive strength compared to suppress the bending and tensile performance is affected. In addition, the experiment shows that the destruction patterns of concrete specimen producted by high velocity impact and contact explosion are significantly similar. Therefore, it is possible to predict the destruction patterns of specimens in the situation of contact explosion by high-velocity projectile.
