The accumulated displacements and fatigues of rock are increased by the stress-hysteresis, induced from repeated frost-thawing. Also the shear strength is decreased by them continuously. The stress-hysteresis is affected by the atmospheric temperature changes, whose behavior is visco-elasticity, usually. Therefore, to do ideal body analysis, Kelvin model could be used to analyze the frost-thawing behavior in winter. In general, rock slope failure occurs by the deterioration of rocks, which is caused by the repetition of freezing-thawing process. In order to keep the safety of such rock mass structures the deterioration process of rock needs to be described quantitatively using some meaningful parameters. In this work, the deterioration process in freezing-thawing cycle of tuff, which is a famous soft porous rock, is investigated through laboratory tests and successfully described as a differential equation for the change of porosity. And then, the deterioration of the mechanical properties of rock, such as Young's modulus and uniaxial compressive strength, are quantitatively described as a function of the porosity.

A suitability of a thixotropic grout developed in this study has been examined through laboratory tests on strength, segregation, and viscosity. The thixotropic grout is a mixture of two types of liquid components. The A-liquid component consists of cement, water, and MG-A and the B-liquid component consists of scarlet, water, and MG-B. Unconfined compressive strength of specimens prepared with a prefer mix-proportion satisfied a design criteria for the backfilling of tail voids. A material segregation phenomenon under water condition was not observed in the thixotropic grout whereas it was observed in the existing silica-type grout. In addition, viscosity tests have been rallied out on the thixotropic grout to verify the capability of a long-distance delivery in the field. Both the A-liquid component and the B-liquid component maintained a viscosity of below 2,000 cP for 120 minutes. This experimental result confirms that two liquid components guarantees a long-distance delivery in tile field application.

The research analyzes and investigates conventional concrete, hydration heat, set, and mechanical properties by making high flowing self-compacting concretes of binary blend and ternary blend as one of evaluations about the properties of the hydration heat of high flowing self-compacting concrete with a strength of 30, 50, and 70 MPa. In addition, it estimates concrete adiabatic temperatures by calculating a thermal property value of powder obtained by measuring a heat evolution amount for powder used in concrete, a thermal property value of concrete obtained by conducting a simple adiabatic temperature test, and a normal thermal property value of material used in concrete, using a simple equation. Moreover, it analyzes and investigates the hydration heat property of high flowing self-compacting concrete and the thermal stress caused by hydration heat by conducting a 3D temperature stress analysis for the hydration heat and the adiabatic temperature obtained by temperature analysis, using MIDAS CIVIL 06 program.

Urbanization and industrialization have significantly increased the amount of solid waste produced in recent decades, posing considerable disposal problems and environmental burdens. The practice of waste utilization in concrete has gained popularity among construction practitioners and researchers for the efficient use of resources and the transition to the circular economy in construction. This study employed Lytag aggregate, an environmentally friendly pulverized fuel ash-based lightweight aggregate, as a substitute for natural coarse aggregate. At the same time, fly ash, an industrial by-product, was used as a partial substitute for cement. Concrete mix M20 was experimented with using fly ash and Lytag lightweight aggregate. The percentages of fly ash that make up the replacements were 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%. The Compressive Strength (CS), Split Tensile Strength (STS), and deflection were discovered at these percentages after 56 days of testing. The concrete cube, cylinder, and beam specimens were examined in the explorations, as mentioned earlier. The results indicate that a 10% substitution of cement with fly ash and a replacement of coarse aggregate with Lytag lightweight aggregate produced concrete that performed well in terms of mechanical properties and deflection. The cementitious composites have varying characteristics as the environment changes. Therefore, understanding their mechanical properties are crucial for safety reasons. CS, STS, and deflection are the essential property of concrete. Machine learning (ML) approaches have been necessary to predict the CS of concrete. The Artificial Fish Swarm Optimization (AFSO), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), and Harmony Search (HS) algorithms were investigated for the prediction of outcomes. This work deftly explains the tremendous AFSO technique, which achieves the precise ideal values of the weights in the model to crown the mathematical modeling technique. This has been proved by the minimum, maximum, and sample median, and the first and third quartiles were used as the basis for a boxplot through the standardized method of showing the dataset. It graphically displays the quantitative value distribution of a field. The correlation matrix and confidence interval were represented graphically using the corrupt method.

Water pipes manufactured using existing Portland cement suffer from the problem of rapid deterioration and reduced durability due to the hydration product of cement being vulnerable to acids. Therefore, in this study, water pipes were manufactured using slag and fly ash, which are industrial by-products from various industries, and their characteristics were analyzed. As a result of the experiment, slump in unhardened concrete tended to increase due to the ball bearing action of fly ash, and the amount of air was reduced due to unburned coal, indicating that measures for frost resistance were needed. In addition, the initial strength of the compressive strength was increased through steam curing, and the results were equal to or better than OPC when mixing more than 50 % of slag. The acid resistance results showed that the mass reduction rate was less than 5 %, showing excellent durability performance, and the bending failure load of the water pipe also exceeded the KS standards, so it is judged to be commercializable.

The use of TiO2 photocatalyst in the production of concrete blocks for the purpose of nitrogen oxide reduction is an issue of controversy due to the conflicting evidence on its effectiveness. Efforts have been made to reduce the level of nitrogen oxides in the environment by using of titanium dioxide (TiO2). This study examined the effect of incorporating activated carbon into concrete blocks on the reduction of nitrogen oxides released into the atmosphere and the durability of the blocks. The efficiency of photocatalyst was enhanced through the addition of a surrounding conductive substance. The addition of activated carbon resulted in a significant increase in the electrical conductivity of photocatalytic blocks and improved durability. The cement mixture using 5 % TiO2 and 15 % activated carbon exhibited the optimal mixing ratio for the purpose of nitrogen oxide removal. The effect of the addition of conductive carbon to the photocatalytic blocks was discussed with the results of conductivity, flexural and comprssive strength and nitrogen oxide removal test. The relationship between the addition of conductive carbon to the photocatalytic blocks and its resulting effects have been studied by several tests, including conductivity, flexural and compressive strength, and nitrogen oxide removal.

This paper aims to evaluate the quality characteristics and healing performance of precast concrete incorporating self-healing technology as a key technique for the construction of smart cities. The study found that precast concrete mixed with hybrid capsules exhibited a tendency of reduced slump and air content, impacting the quality characteristics. Specifically, the slump decreased by up to 14 %, and the air content by up to 9 %. Moreover, the inclusion of hybrid capsules in the concrete resulted in a maximum decrease of 16 % in compressive strength and 18 % in flexural strength. However, the introduction of hybrid capsules significantly enhanced the crack healing performance. The assessment through water permeability tests showed that the healing rate of 0.3 mm crack width after a 28-day healing period improved as the mixing ratio increased, with the healing rates at 1 %, 3 %, and 5 % hybrid capsule mixtures observed to increase by approximately 16 %, 25 %, and 32 %, respectively.
In this study, in order to improve the fire resistance performance of structures in case of fire in buildings and structures, PVA fibers and the ZnO particles combined with mesoporous nano silica (MSNs) were mixed with cement mortar, and the specimen was exposed to a temperature range of 20~1100℃. Then the residual compressive strength and weight change rate were measured to determine whether the fire resistance performance changed. As a result of the study, it was found that mixing mesoporous nano silica and PVA fiber together did not contribute to improving the fire resistance performance of cement mortar. On the other hand, mixing 0.5% of mesoporous nano silica and 0.1 vol% of PVA fiber showed the best improvement test results, showing that it was advantageous for fire resistance performance.
Determination of jointed rock mass properties plays a significant role in the design and construction of underground structures such as tunneling and mining. Rock mass classification systems such as Rock Mass Rating (RMR), Rock Mass Index (RMi), Rock Mass Quality (Q), and deformation modulus (Em) are determined from the jointed rock masses. However, parameters of jointed rock masses can be affected by the tunnel depth below the surface due to the effect of the in situ stresses. In addition, the geomechanical properties of rocks change due to the effect of metamorphism. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to apply correlation analysis to investigate the relationships between rock mass properties and some parameters related to the depth of the tunnel studied. For this purpose, the field work consisted of determining rock mass parameters in a tunnel alignment (~7.1 km) at varying depths from 21 m to 431 m below ground surface. At the same excavation depths, thirty-seven rock types were also sampled and tested in the laboratory. Correlations were made between vertical stress and depth, horizontal/vertical stress ratio (k) and depth, k and Em, k and RMi, k and point load index (PLI), k and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS), Em and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), UCS and PLI, UCS and BTS. Relationships were significant (significance level=0.000) at the confidence interval of 95% (r = 0.77-0.88) between the data pairs for the rocks taken from depths greater than 166 m where the ratio of horizontal to vertical stress is between 0.6 and 1.2. The in-situ stress parameters affected rock mass properties as well as metamorphism which affected the geomechanical properties of rock materials by affecting the behavior of minerals and textures within rocks. This study revealed that in-situ stress parameters and metamorphism should be reviewed when tunnel studies are carried out.
Evaluating the performance of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) stands as a pivotal juncture in the domain of hard rock mechanized tunneling, essential for achieving both a dependable construction timeline and utilization rate. In this investigation, three advanced artificial neural networks namely, gated recurrent unit (GRU), back propagation neural network (BPNN), and simple recurrent neural network (SRNN) were crafted to prognosticate TBM-rate of penetration (ROP). Drawing from a dataset comprising 1125 data points amassed during the construction of the Alborze Service Tunnel, the study commenced. Initially, five geomechanical parameters were scrutinized for their impact on TBM-ROP efficiency. Subsequent statistical analyses narrowed down the effective parameters to three, including uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), peak slope index (PSI), and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS). Among the methodologies employed, GRU emerged as the most robust model, demonstrating exceptional predictive prowess for TBM-ROP with staggering accuracy metrics on the testing subset (R2 = 0.87, NRMSE = 6.76E-04, MAD = 2.85E-05). The proposed models present viable solutions for analogous ground and TBM tunneling scenarios, particularly beneficial in routes predominantly composed of volcanic and sedimentary rock formations. Leveraging forecasted parameters holds the promise of enhancing both machine efficiency and construction safety within TBM tunneling endeavors.
