The finite volume method for forging simulation is examined to reveal its possibility as well as its problem in this paper. For this study, the finite volume method based MSC/SuperForge and the finite element method based AFDEX are employed. The simulated results of the homogeneous compression obtained by the two softwares are compared to indicate the problems of the finite volume method while several application examples are given to show the possibility of the finite volume method for simulation of upsetter forging processes. It is shown that the finite volume method can not predict the exact solution of the homogeneous compression especially in terms of forming load and deformed shape but that it is helpful to simulate very complex forging processes which can hardly be simulated by the conventional finite element method.
A real-time joint transform correlator by using JPEG-compressed reference images is proposed as practical solution to storage problem and improvement of processing time of automatic target recognition system [1]. Effects of compression on recognition performance of join transform correlator are quantitatively investigated under situations where the target is suffered from noise and has contrast difference with respect to the reference. Two images with different spatial-frequency contents and contrast were used as the test scenes. The simulation results show that, the recognition performance of joint transform correlator by using the compressed reference images with high spatial-frequency components is more sensitive to noise and contrast difference than the low spatial-frequency image.

This paper presents the analytical results of local buckling of orthotropic I-shape compression members. Employing the equilibrium approach, the characteristic equation for local buckling of I-shape compression member is derived. Using the derived equation, the minimum buckling coefficients with respect to the ratio of width to thickness for the I-shape column are suggested as a graphical form. In addition, the dominant plate component initiating the local buckling of I-shape column is also identified by using the approximate solution and the results are plotted with dotted line on the minimum bucking coefficient curve.

In recent years, some modifications were introduced in the stress-strain relationship of the steel in order to develop a more efficient shear model for reinforced concrete members. The last contribution in this sense corresponding to the Refined Compression Field Theory (RCFT, 2009); this theory proposed a steel constitutive model that has account the tension stiffening area prescribed by technical codes, what simplifies all the design process. However, under certain design conditions supported by such codes, the RCFT model does not provide a real (non-complex) solution for the steel yield strain when the prescribed tension stiffening area is considered; then the load-strain response cannot be computed. In this technical note, the tension stiffening area is fixed in order to guarantee the application of the embedded steel constitutive model for all the standard design range.
With the application and development of biomedical techniques such as next-generation sequencing, mass spectrometry, and medical imaging, the amount of biomedical data have been growing explosively. In terms of processing such data, we face the problems surrounding big data, highly intensive computation, and high dimensionality data. Fortunately, cloud computing represents significant advantages of resource allocation, data storage, computation, and sharing and offers a solution to solve big data problems of biomedical research. In order to improve the efficiency of resource management in cloud computing, this paper proposes a clustering method and adopts Radial Basis Function in order to compress comprehensive data sets found in biology and medicine in high quality, and stores these data with resource management in cloud computing. Experiments have validated that with such a data-compression-based resource management in cloud computing, one can store large data sets from biology and medicine in fewer capacities. Furthermore, with reverse operation of the Radial Basis Function, these compressed data can be reconstructed with high accuracy.
The mechanical properties of Ti-Al intermetallic compounds which contain Mn, Zr, or Cr as the third element have been evaluated by means of hardness and compression tests. Microstructures have also been examined using an optical microscope. The cast structures of Ti-Al alloys are coarsened and the lamellar volume fraction is increased by the additions of Mn or V, but the cast structures are refined by the addition of Zr. Hardness tests of room temperature and compression tests at $600^{\circ}C$ showed that the mechanical properties of Ti-Al alloys were mainly dependent on the volume fraction of the ${\alpha}_2$ phase, grain size and solid solution hardening. However according to the compression test at $1000^{\circ}C$, the yield strength of Ti-Al alloys decreased with an increase in Mn or Cr content, but increased with an increase in the Zr content.
Fractures in the form of micro cracks are commonly found in natural rocks. A rock behaves in a complex way due to fracture; in particular, the anisotropic strength of a rock material is significantly influenced by the presence of these fractures. Therefore, it is essential to understand the failure mechanism of a fractured rock. In this study, a fractured rock is formulated in terms of fabric tensor based on geometric and mechanical simplifications. In this way, position, density and shape of fractures can be determined by the fabric tensor so that rocks containing multi-fractures can successfully be modeled. Also an index to evaluate the degree of anisotropy of a fractured rock is proposed. Hence, anisotropic strength of a rock containing fractures under uniaxial compression condition is estimated through a series of numerical analyses for the multi-fractured model. Numerical investigations are carried out by varying the fracture angle from $0^{\circ}\;to\;90^{\circ}$ and relationship between uniaxial compression strength and the degree of anisotropy is investigated. By comparing anisotropic strength of numerical analysis with analytic solution, this study attempts to understand the failure mechanism of rock containing fractures.

The purpose of the work is to improve comfort of a car seat, especially dynamic comfort which affects driver's discomfort during the long time driving. Definition of dynamic comfort was made before the investigation of which parameter affects seat comfort. In order to optimize design parameters so as to maximize seat comfort as well as to know the cause of discomfort, benchmarking on a target vehicle and competitive vehicles was performed, which showed both the vibration transmission characteristics and the compression set due to dynamic loading should be reduced. As a solution ball rebounds was increased by about 10% of the original foam, which showed reduction of S.E.A.T. value by 10% and of compression set by 60%.
It is reported that mechanical stimulation takes a role in improving cell growth in skeletal system. And various research groups have showed that developed bioreactor to stimulate cell-seeded and threedimensional scaffold. In this study, we designed a custom-made bioreactor capable of applying controlled compression to cell-seeded agarose gel. This device consisted of a circulation system and compression system. In circular system, culture chamber was sealed for prohibiting contamination and media solution was circulated by pump. In compression system, mechanical stimuli were controlled by LabVIEW software and mechanical transfer system. Cell-encapsulated agarose gels were cultured for up to 7 days. There were significant differences between the number of cells grown in dynamic cell culture and in static cell culture from 3 days to 7 days.
This paper shows the solution for an orthotropic disk under the plane strain condition obtained with complex stress functions. These stress functions were induced by Lekhnitskii and expanded by one of the authors. Regarding diametrical compression test, the finite element method poses difficulties in representing the concentrated force because the specimens must be divided into finite elements during calculation. On the other hand, the method shown in this study can exactly represent this force. Some numerical results are shown and compared with those obtained under the plane stress condition for both stress and displacement. This comparison shows that the differences between the tensile stresses occurred under the plane strain condition and also that the differences under a plane stress condition increase as the orthotropy ratio increases for some cases.
