  • In order to find out the potential of LP gas as a substitute fuel for small fm engine, experiments were carried out with a four-stroke spark-ignition engine which was modified from a kerosene engine mounted on the power tiller. Performance characteristics of kerosene and LP gas engine such as torque, volumetric efficiency fuel consumption rate, brake thermal efficiency, exhaust temperature, and carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions were measured and analyzed under various levels of engine speed and compression ratio. The results were summarized as follows. 1. It showed that forque of LPG engine was 41% lower than that of kerosene engine with the same compression ratio, but LPG engine with compression ratio of 8.5 it was showed similar torque level to kerosene engine with compression ratio of 4.5. 2. Fuel consumption of LPG engine was reduced by about 5.1% and thermal efficiency was improved by about 2% compared with kerosene engine with the same compression ratio. With the incrasing of compression ratio in LPG engine fuel consumption rate decreased and thermal efficiency increased. 3. Exhaust temperature of LPG engine was about 15% lower than that of kerosene engine. Concenrations of emissions from LPG engine was affected insignificantly by compression ratios, and carbon monoxide emissions from the LPG engine was not affected by engine speed so much. The carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions from LPG engine were about 94% and 66% lower than those of kerosene engine, respectively.

  • The object level image compression is a useful technology for reducing the necessary data and manipulating individual objects. In this paper, we propose a new image object compression algorithm that uses the quadratic programming (QP) method to reduce the compressed data. The results indicate the superiority of the proposed QP based algorithm over the low pass extrapolation (LPE) method of MPEG-4.

  • Thoracic spinal actinomycosis causing epidural abscess and significant spinal cord compression is very rare. A case is presented of a 56-year-old woman with rapid progressive upper back pain and weakness in both legs without evidence of systemic infection. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a thoracic epidural enhancing lesion at the T1-T5 level. After decompression by laminectomy, precise diagnosis was accomplished using specific histopathological studies of the surgical specimens. A histopathologic findings showing typical Actinomyces sulfur granules surrounded by acute inflammatory cells. The clinical radiological findings of spinal actinomycosis closely resemble metastatic tumors and other infectious processes. Delay in diagnosis and treatment can significantly worsen the condition of patient.

  • This paper describes the image data compression based on the image decomposition. We reduced the processing time using the segmentation based on the distribution of grey level, and obtained high compression rate using the Huffman run-length coding for the segmented image, and the 2-Dimensional least square curve fitting and the shift coder for each region.

  • This paper presents a simple method to implement a complete on-line portable wireless holter including an electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring, processing, and communication protocol. The proposed algorithm significantly reduces the hardware resources of threshold estimation for ECG compression, using the standard deviation updated with each new input signal sample. The new method achieves superior performance in terms of hardware complexity, channel occupation and memory requirements, while keeping the ECG quality at a clinically acceptable level.

  • In this paper, we propose the Min-hash Assisted Delta-compression Engine(MADE) to improve the lifetime of NAND flash-based storages at the device level. MADE effectively reduces the write traffic to NAND flash through the use of a novel delta compression scheme. The delta compression performance was optimized by introducing min-hash based LSH(Locality Sensitive Hash) and efficiently combining it with our delta compression method. We also developed a delta encoding technique that has functionality equivalent to deduplication and lossless compression. The results of our experiment show that MADE reduces the amount of data written on NAND flash by up to 90%, which is better than a simple combination of deduplication and lossless compression schemes by 12% on average.

  • The pulse compression technique using Linear FM signal is commonly used for improving the performance of both the detection range and range resolution in radar system. In general, the compressed LFM waveform has relatively large sidelobe level which may prevent a target from being detected when strong jammer or clutter signal is near the target signal. In this paper, we propose a new weighting method which uses the square-root weight to suppress the sidelobe level. Typical applications are missile seekers and tracking radar systems where target tracking range is available prior to the signal processing. By computer simulation, we show that the performance of the proposed method is better than that of the conventional weighting methods in terms of sidelobe suppression.

  • In this work, an improved method of EZW is suggested for efficient compression and transmission of image data. Here, coding efficiency is accomplished by embedded coding of significant coefficients using lower-level insignificant coefficients, and coding time is decreased by pre-coding of lower-level coefficients in coefficient detection. In simulation of designed architecture, the performance improvement of 1dB PSNR is confirmed compared with the results by the original En method.

  • An image data compression method for a digital VCR must satisfy special requirements such as high speed playback. various edting capabilities and error concealment to provide immunity to tape dropouts. Taking these requirements requirements into consideration, this paper proposes a new interframe subband coding algorithm for a digital VCR. In the proposed method, continuous input images are fist partitioned into four frequency bands. The lowest frequency subband is coded with 3-D block adaptive quantization that removes the level redundancy within each level. The other higher frequency subbands are coded by an intraframe coding method using the property of the human visual system. To keep reasonable image quality in high speed palyback, a segment forming method in the frequency domaing is also proposed Computer simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has the potential of achieving virtually lossless compression in normal play and produces an image with less mosaic errors in high speed play.

  • A numerical prediction was performed to clarify the air motion in the cylinder of an axisymmet-ric four-stroke reciprocating engine at its intake and compression stage. A scheme of finite volume method is used for the calculation. Modified $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is adopted and wall function is applied to the grids near the wall. The predicted mean velocity and rms velocity profiles showed a reasonable agreement with an available experimental data at its intake and compression stage. The predicted in-cylinder flow fields show that a strong turbulent twin vortex structure is pro-duced during induction but it commences to decay rapidly around inlet valve closure. The mean velocity continues to fall to a low level during compression but the turbulence intensity attains an approximate constant level.
