Very frequently the compressible flow in an extinction nozzle of gas circuit breaker is simulated under no arc assumption, which can be reasonable for both high and low current breakings. In the present study, computations are performed to investigate the major features of the compressible flows inside the arc extinction nozzle of gas circuit breaker. A fully implicit finite volume scheme is applied to solve the two-dimensional, steady, compressible, Wavier-Stokes equations. The computed results are validated with the previous experimental data available. Several types of turbulence models are explored to reasonably predict the complicated flows inside the arc extinction nozzle. The obtained results show that the shock wave boundary layer interaction inside the nozzle significantly influences the whole performance of the gas breaker.
In this paper, we present the exact Riemann solver for the compressible liquid-gas two-phase shock tube problems. We hereby consider both isentropic and non-isentropic two-phase flows. The shock tube has a diaphragm in the mid-section which separates the liquid medium on the left and the gas medium on the right. By rupturing the diaphragm, various waves are observed on the phasic field variables such as pressure, density, temperature and void fraction in the form of rarefaction wave, shock wave and material interface (contact discontinuity). Both phases are treated as compressible fluids using the linearized equation of state or the stiffened-gas equation of state. We solve several shock tube problems made of a high/low pressure in the liquid and a low/high pressure in the gas. The wave propagations are well resolved by the exact Riemann solutions.
This paper presents the computational method for analyzing the compressible flow fields in a high voltage gas circuit breaker. There are many difficult problems in analyzing the gas flow in GCB due to complex geometry, moving boundary, shock wave and so on. In particular, the distortion problem of the grid due to the movement of moving parts can be worked out by the fixed grid technique. Numerical simulations are based on a fully implicit finite volume method of the compressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations to obtain the pressure, density, and velocity through the entire interruption process. The presented method is applied to the real circuit breaker model and the pressure in front of the piston is good agreement with the experimental one.
Carboxy-guns are used for rapid and precise injection of $CO_2$ gas to the target skin area using external power source. In the design of carboxy-gun, the most important thing is how to precisely control injection volume of $CO_2$ gas. This paper deals with the control scheme of injection volume of carboxy-gun using solenoid valve. First the amount of volume that passes through the solenoid valve under on-off time ratio control is estimated based on the assumption of compressible gas flow. The flow rate of gas is experimentally measured under the varying pressure of the gas reservoir. Two results showed good correlation to each other, thus demonstrating the validity of the volume control strategy.
Critical nozzle has been frequently employed to measure the flow rate of various gases, but hydrogen gas, especially being at high-pressure condition, was not nearly dealt with the critical nozzle due to treatment danger. According to a few experimental data obtained recently, it was reported that the discharge coefficient of hydrogen gas through the critical nozzle exceeds unity in a specific range of Reynolds number. No detailed explanation on such an unreasonable value was made, but it was vaguely inferred as real gas effects. For the purpose of practical use of high-pressure hydrogen gas, systematic research is required to clarify the critical nozzle flow of high-pressure hydrogen gas. In the present study, a computational fluid dynamics(CFD) method has been applied to predict the critical nozzle flow of high-pressure hydrogen gas. Redlich-Kwong equation of state that take account for the forces and volume of molecules of hydrogen gas were incorporated into the axisymmetric, compressible Navier-Stokes equations. A fully implicit finite volume scheme was used to numerically solve the governing equations. The computational results were validated with some experimental data available. The results show that the coefficient of discharge coefficient is mainly influenced by the compressibility factor and the specific heat ratio, which appear more remarkable as the inlet total pressure of hydrogen gas increases.
The method of mass flow rate measurement using a critical nozzle is well established in the flow satisfying ideal gas law. However, in the case of measuring high-pressure gas flow, the current method shows invalid discharge coefficient because the flow does not follow ideal gas law. Therefore an appropriate equation of state considering real gas effects should be applied into the method. The present computational study has been performed to give an understanding of the physics of a critical nozzle flow for high-pressure hydrogen gas and find a way for the exact mass flow prediction. The two-dimensional, axisymmetric, compressible Navier-Stokes equations are computed using a fully implicit finite volume method. The real gas effects are considered in the calculation of discharge coefficient as well as in the computation. The computational results are compared with the previous experimental data and predict well the measured mass flow rates. It has been found that the discharge coefficient for high-pressure hydrogen gas can be corrected properly adopting the real gas effects.
When a leak occurs in the buried pipelines, The leak locations are able to detected by using the vibration sensors. These leak detection system, intended for incompressible fluid, such as water, are of using the wave propagation velocity and a signal arrival time delay between the sensors. In this paper, to develop a leak location detection system for a compressible fluid such as gas, the conventional detection methods have been studied, improved, and verified through the experiment using the compressed air. It confirmed that it is possible to detect the leak location for compressible fluid in the buried pipelines and to be applicable to the development of a leak location detection system in buried pipelines for gas.

The code developed using a pressure-based method for unified conservation laws of incompressible/compressible fluids is expanded to handle moving or deforming body boundaries using the hybrid Cartesian/immersed boundary method. An instantaneous pressure field is calculated from a pressure Poisson equation for the whole fluid domain, including the compressible gas region. The polytropic gas is assumed for the compressible fluid so that the energy equation is decoupled. Immersed boundary nodes are identified based on edges crossing body boundaries. The velocity vector is reconstructed at the immersed boundary node using an interpolation along the assigned local normal line. The developed code is validated by comparing the time histories of pressure and wave elevation for sloshing in a rectangular and a membrane-type tank. The validated code is applied to simulate air cushion effects in a rectangular tank under sway motion. Time variations of pressure fields are analyzed in detail as the air pocket pulsates. It is shown that the contraction and expansion of the air pocket dominate the pressure loads on the wall of the tank. The present results are in good agreement with other experimental and computational results for the amplitude and the decay of the pressure oscillations measured at the pressure gauges.

Results of flat plate compressible boundary layer calculation, based on discrete formulation of DSMC method, are presented in low Mach number and low Knudsen number range. The free stream is a uniform flow of pure nitrogen at various Mach numbers in low pressures (i.e. rarefied gas). Complete thermal accommodation and diffuse molecular reflections are used as the wall boundary condition, replacing unreal no-slip condition used in continuum calculations. In the discrete formulation of DSMC method, there is no need to use ad hoc assumptions on transport properties like viscosity and thermal conductivity, instead viscosity is calculated from values of other field variables (velocity and shear stress). Also the results are compared with existing self-similar continuum solutions. In all Mach number cases computed, velocity slip is most pronounced in regions near the leading edge where continuum formulation renders the solution singular. As the boundary layer develops further downstream, velocity slips asymptote to values that are between 10 to 20% of the magnitude of free stream velocity. When the free stream number density is reduced, so the gas more rarefied, the velocity slip increases as expected.

Pneumatic levitation is based upon Bernoulli's principle. However, this method is known to require a large gas flow rate that can lead to an increase in the cost of products. In this case, the gas flow rate should be increased, and the compressible effects of the gas may be of practical importance. In the present study, a computational fluid dynamics method has been used to obtain insights into Bernoulli levitation flows. Three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations in combination with the SST k-${\omega}$ turbulence model were solved using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. The gas flow rate, workpiece diameter, and clearance gap between the workpiece and the circular cylinder were varied to investigate the flow characteristics inside. It is known that there is an optimal clearance gap for the lifting force and that increasing the supply gas flow rate results in a larger lifting force.
