  • In the Nakdong River plain a very thick clayey soils are covered widely. Since the early 1990's, some huge reclamation projects have been performed for the development of industrial and residential complexes and so on. Despite a large number of soil investigations have been carried out for the projects, the geotechnical properties have never been elucidated well, so that the settlements of the ground due to the mischaracterized properties were greatly underestimated. Therefore, it has been needed to evaluate definitely the characteristics of the clayey soils, particularly for the compressibility characteristics to help understand the settlement behavior. For the compressibility characteristics of the Pusan clays, physical index and consolidation tests were conducted on the reconstituted and undisturbed samples. Using the result of physical index, the Pusan clays could be divided into two different units, which have different depositional environments. According to the concepts of Burland (1990) and Nagaraj et. al. (1990), the intrinsic state line and field compression curve of the Pusan clays could be established. It could be found from their concepts that the Pusan clays are under the cemented and young normally consolidated state and largely consisted of two units. The cementation of the clays was as well identified by compression index ratio (Tsuchida et. al.,1991) and sensitivity (Leroueil et. al.,1983).

  • One-Dimensional Nonlinear Consolidation Model(NCM) ivas developed by using an Extended Power Function Model, which could represent the compressibility of soils. A nonlinear finite element program for NCM was developed to analyze the porewater pressure dissipation and the settlement of saturated soils. Parameters used in compressibility model could be easily obtained from conventional oedometer test data. This model has been applied to Yansan-Mulgum area for the comparison with the results of CONSOL program and that of Terzaghi theory. A Good The rates of consolidation predicted by this model and CONSOL were faster than that of conventional Tergaghi theory, for they consider the nonlinear characteristics of soils. Consolidation curves of this model were located between Terzaghi and CONSOL curves. Consolidation curves near drainage boundary, where effective stress valied rapidly, seemed to reflect the variations of compressibility of sails. Consolidation curves near drainage boundary obtained from this model were composed of two parabolic curves. Intersection of the parabolic curves occurred when effective stress reached the value of preconsolidation stress. Moreover, thin model could be used to represent the effect of magnitude of applied load. whereas CONSOL and Terazghi theory could not.

  • It's essential process to study non-linear material function related to characteristics of compressibility and permeability when we predict the consolidation behavior of soft clay ground. In this study, laboratory tests were conducted to find out the material function using marine clay. Standard oedometer test and Rowe cell test were performed with conditions, which were classified into vertical drainage only, radial drainage only and vertical-radial drainage case. Modified oedometer test equipment was developed to find out the material function and special extrusion device was originated to minimize the sample disturbance effect. Reliability of the results in modified oedometer test could be confirmed by comparing with the Rowe cell's one. Effective stress - void ratio - permeability relations were analyzed using all testing results. As a result, void ratio with effective stress level could be expressed by the power function and permeability with void ratio could be expressed by exponential function. In soft clay with high initial water content and low shear strength, non-linear characteristics related to compressibility and permeability varied with wide range by the effective stress levels. It's important to note that non-linearity of the material function should be considered at prediction of the consolidation behavior.

  • In this paper, effects of the acidification of ground and the chemical additive materials-ferric oxide, calcium chloride and calcium sulphate on the compressibility characteristics of the marine clay treated with quick lime were investigated. The rapid inflection point method was carried out. Results showed that the compression index of the untreated marine clay increased as the pH of pore water decreased. Also, the preconsolidation pressure, the coefficient of consolidation and the coefficient of permeability of the untreated marine clay decreased with pH of pore water. In the case of the marine clay treated with the quick lime-calcium chloride, the compression index decreased and the coefficient of consolidation and the coefficient of permeability increased. Specially, the preconsolidation pressure of sample treated with the quick lime-ferric oxide was higher than that of another samples.

  • According to the field measurement of dredging-reclaimed land, the actual self-weight consolidation settlement has been frequently reported to be less than the predicted values based on the laboratory tests results. The author estimates that one of the reasons is the reduction of the compressibility due to the sedimentation of the dredging material, Furthemore, the aging effect is ignored in the consolidation characteristics of the very low stress range as a pump dredging-reclaimed land. In this paper, a series of seepage consotidation tests has been carried out by applying the seepage force to the specimen prepared by sedimentation in consolidmeter in order to clarflfy the aging-effect on the compressibility of dredging clayey soil, Also, with a view to overcome unstable consolidation solution occurring in the case where the initial water content is higher as pumpdredging reclaimed land, the finite difference analysis technique using predictorforrector method is suggested that it gets good agreement with ezperimental results. Finally, the compressibility of the dredging clayey soil is depended on self-weight consolidation time.

  • Strain energy function of the isoprene rubber was accurately determined by the experiments of uniaxial tension, planar tension, biaxial tension and volumetric compression. Deformation behavior of alternatively laminated structure of elastomer and reinforced aluminium layers, was analysed by Finite Element method. As a result, Ogden strain energy function obtained from the experiments describes the hyperelastic characteristics of the rubber very well. The compressibility of the rubber reduces axial stiffness of the structure. The axial stiffness of alternatively laminated structure being larger than shear stiffness. Which enables the structure to be shear-deformed easily.

  • High-resolution numerical study is carried out to investigate the flame stability of the turbulent supersonic combustion in a Dual-Combustion Ramjet (DCR). The auto-ignition in a shear layer between hydrogen/carbon-monoxide syngas and air was studied at elevated enthalpy condition. Comparison of a constant area combustor and a combustor with a small divergence angle shows that the supersonic combustion has a characteristics of the lifted flame and its stability is influenced significantly by the compressibility.

  • The hydrodynamic characteristic of transonic motion projectiles with different head diameters are investigated by numerical simulation. Compressibility effect in liquid-phase water are modeled using the Tait state equation. The result shows that with increasing of velocity the compression waves transfer to shock waves, which cause the significant increasing of pressure and decreasing the dimensions of supercavities. While the increasing of head diameter, the thickness, the vapor volume fraction and the drag coefficient of supercavities are all enhanced, which is conducive to the stability of transonic-speed projectiles. The cavity dynamics of the different head projectiles are compared, and the results shows when Mach number is in high region, the truncated cone head projectile is enveloped by a cavity which results in less drag and better stability.

  • Crushable sandy soil grounds are widely found along the coast throughout the world. The ground composed of lime sand, which is characterized by the material with high compressibility due to particle crushing contains carbonate calcium. In this study, in order to clarify the characteristics of the particle crushing as related to the strength and deformation properties of sands, isotropic compression test was carried out on three different types of carbonate sands and a silica sand. A crushability index, K, is proposed in connection with the yielding and particle crushing stress of sands at various relative densities under isotropic compression. It is concluded that the representative crushability index, K, associated with the soil particle strength, can be a key factor in preliminary parameters in evaluating soil crushability.

  • Strength and compressibility characteristics of Light-Weighted Foam Soil (LWFS) are experimentally investigated in the paper. LWFS is composed of the dredged soils, cement and air foam to reduce unit-weight and to increase compressive strength. For these purposes, both unconfined compression tests and triaxial compression tests are carried out fer artficially prepared specimens of LWFS with various initial water contents, cement contents, mixing ratio of silty dredged soils and different confining stresses. The experimental results of LWFS indicate that the stress-strain relationship and the compressive strength are strongly influenced by cement contents rather than intial water contents of the edged soils. In this paper, the normalizing scheme considering the ratio of initial water contents, cement contents, and air foam contents has been proposed to evaluate the relationship between compressive strength of LWFS and a normalized factor.
