  • A comparison of the functional components underlying photoperiodism and circadian rhythmicity in the same species is an interesting issue in the context of unravelling clock mechanisms. In the present study, covering or surgical removal of the compound eyes was performed to localize photoreceptors for photoperiodism to control reproductive diapause and for entrainment of circadian locomotor rhythms in the blow fly Protophormia terraenovae. Intact flies showed a long-day photoperiodic response. When the compound eyes were covered by silver paint, diapause incidence increased under diapause-averting conditions of a long-day photoperiod and constant light, as if flies were kept under constant darkness. Covering of a medial region of the head capsule or solvent painting of the compound eyes gave no significant effects. When the compound eyes were removed, flies did not distinguish the photoperiod, whereas removal of antennal lobes or ocelli did not affect the photoperiodism. Intact flies showed a freerunning rhythm under constant darkness. The rhythm entrained to light-dark (LD) cycles with light of high and low intensity. When the compound eyes and ocelli were surgically removed, the rhythm entrained to LD cycles with light of high intensity but freeran under LD cycles with light of low intensity. The results suggest the retinal pathways are involved in photoperiodism and that flies use both retinal and extraretinal pathways for rhythm entrainment. Under dim light-LD cycles, the retinal pathways mainly mediate rhythm entrainment. Retinal photoreceptors seem to be used both for photoperiodism and entrainment of the rhythm.

  • The Rates of formation and heats of activation for the intermatallic Compound Layers between Cold rolled sheet and molten aluminium &ath (adding small amounts of silicon) has been determined by Continous aluminizing method in the temperature range of 680$^{\circ}$ to 760$^{\circ}C$ and with immerssion time. The structure of the intermetallic Compound Layers was the shape of "Tongues" in pure Al-Bath and Al-Bath Containing 1% Si, But in Al-5% Si Bath was "Band" the Composition of the intermetallic Compound Layers were checked by microhardness measurements and X-Ray probe micro analyzer. FeAl intermetallic Compound layer was found to be uniform in pure Al-Bath and Al-5% Si Bath, But Fe Al intermetallic Compound Layer was shown in Al-1% Si Bath. The growth Rates of the intermetallic Compound Layers was most rapidly increased at Temperatures from 720$^{\circ}$ to 760$^{\circ}C$, at the immorsion time above 60 Second in pure Al-Bath, But in Al-1% Si Bath was solwly increased for the same conditions, and then in Al-5% Si Bath was hardly effected by these experimental condition. Heasts of activation of 29, 46 Kcal per mole which calculuted from Layer growth experiments were found in pure Al-Bath, Al-1% Si Bath respectively.

  • The present study was carried out to examine the changes in functional properties of cholesterol-removed compound whipping cream made by $\beta$-CD treated cream and palm oil. Six different ratios of cream to palm oil (10:0 as control, 9:1, 8:2, 7:3, 6:4, and 5:5, v/v) were tested. The overrun percentage increased with an increased amount of palm oil. When the ratio of cream to palm oil was 10:0 (control), the overrun was 130%, which was significantly lower than other ratios reached to 150%. Foam instability was measured as 3.1 ml defoamed cream in control, however, the value of foam instability decreased with an increase of palm oil addition. The TBA value of cholesterol-removed compound whipping cream increased from 0.08 to 0.13 with no addition of palm oil during 4 wk storage. When the ratio of cream to palm oil was 5:5, TBA value increased dramatically at 3 wk and thereafter. Among sensory characteristics, texture value increased with higher amount of palm oil, however, flavor and overall preferences were opposite. Above results indicated that partial substitution of palm oil in manufacture of cholesterol-removed compound whipping cream resulted in a stable foam development with little adverse effect on flavor and lipid oxidation during storage. The present study showed a possible application in manufacture of cholesterol-removed compound whipping cream, which may be effective in other foods.

  • This study aimed to examine the anti-candidal efficacy of a novel ketone derivative isolated from Diaporthe sp. ED2, an endophytic fungus residing in medicinal herb Orthosiphon stamieus Benth. The ethyl acetate extract of the fungal culture was separated by open column and reverse phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The eluent at retention time 5.64 min in the HPLC system was the only compound that exhibited anti-candidal activity on Kirby-Bauer assay. The structure of the compound was also elucidated by nuclear magnetic resonance and spectroscopy techniques. The purified anti-candidal compound was obtained as a colorless solid and characterized as 3-hydroxy-5-methoxyhex-5-ene-2,4-dione. On broth microdilution assay, the compound also exhibited fungicidal activity on a clinical strain of Candida albicans at a minimal inhibitory concentration of $3.1{\mu}g/ml$. The killing kinetic analysis also revealed that the compound was fungicidal against C. albicans in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. The compound was heat-stable up to $70^{\circ}C$, but its anti-candidal activity was affected at pH 2.

  • Recently the method of basal compound fertilizer (N : P : K = 18.2 : 9.8 : 35.0) Placement has been changed from banding to broadcasting in tobacco cultivation. The effects of the compound fertilizer placement, level of fertilizer and additional urea application on the agronomic characteristics, two chemical compositions and physical Properties of burley tobacco(Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. KB 108) were investigated at Chonju Experiment Station, Korea Ginseng and Tobacco Research Institute in 1995-1996. Six treatments consisted of (1) band (method of fertilizer Placement) + In kg/10a(compound fertilizer) + 0(additional urea applied), (2) broadcast+140+0, (3) broadcast+140+25, (4) band+180+0, (5) broadcast+180+0, and (6) broadcast +180+25. The additional urea was applied at hilling. No significant differences were detected between banding and broadcasting method of compound fertilizer Placement in field 9rowth, wield, organoleptic qualify(price Per kilogram), chemical composition and Physical properties of cured leaf, The increased compound fertilizer by 30%(40k/10a) or the additional urea application by 25kg per 10a produced slightly higher yield than the recommended amount of basal compound fertilizer without additional urea application did. It also increased the total alkaloid content of cured leaf. It is recommended that no more basal fertilizer above the recommended amount and no additional urea application are needed in burley tobacco fertilization, even though the method of basal fertilizer placement being chanced from banding to broadcasting. Key words : Nicotiana tabacum, fertilizer placement, additional urea.

  • In the case of dipping the Ni-Resist cast iron into molten aluminum with iron content, the thickness of intermetallic compound was remarkably increased with increasing iron content. The thickness was shown by following equation in the range of 1-3% iron content; $x=22.5t^{1/2}+4.47{\cdot}t{\cdot}(Fe%)$. where, x is thickness(${\mu}m$), t the time (minute), Fe% the iron w/o. When the Ni-Resist cast iron was dipped into the molten aluminum containing zinc content, the intermetallic compound thickness was also increased with increasing zinc contents. And thickness was represented by the following equation in the range of 2-10% zinc content; $x=3.46t^{1/2}+0.27{\cdot}t{\cdot}(Zn%)$. However, in the case of dipping the Ni-resist cast iron into molten aluminum with silicon content, the thickness of intermetallic compound was decreased with increasing silicon content, as shown in the following equation; $x=7.17t^{1/2}-0.15{\cdot}t{\cdot}(Si%)$. The intermetallic compound formed onto Ni-Resist cast iron was identified to be $FeAl_3\;and\;Fe_3Al$. As the result of hardness measurement, the peak hardness appeared in the intermetallic compound at near interface of the cast iron and the compound.

  • This study proposes a new method of analyzing the burnup credit in boiling water reactor spent fuel assemblies against various operating parameters. The operating parameters under investigation include fuel temperature, axial burnup profile, axial moderator density profile, and control blade usage. In particular, the effects of variations in one and two operating parameters on the curve of effective multiplication factor ($k_{eff}$) versus burnup (B) are, respectively, the so-called single and compound effects. All the calculations were performed using SCALE 6.1 together with the Evaluated Nuclear Data Files, part B (ENDF/B)-VII238-neutron energy group data library. Furthermore, two geometrical models were established based on the General Electric (GE)14 $10{\times}10$ boiling water reactor fuel assembly and the Generic Burnup-Credit (GBC)-68 storage cask. The results revealed that the curves of $k_{eff}$ versus B, due to single and compound effects, can be approximated using a first degree polynomial of B. However, the reactivity deviation (or changes of $k_{eff}$, ${\Delta}k$) in some compound effects was not a summation of the all ${\Delta}k$ resulting from the two associated single effects. This phenomenon is undesirable because it may to some extent affect the precise assessment of burnup credit. In this study, a general formula was thus proposed to express the curves of $k_{eff}$ versus B for both single and compound effects.
