Bioactive Materials and Antioxidant Properties of Fermented Rice-bran Extract (쌀겨발효추출물의 이화학적 특성 및 항산화 작용)

  • This study suggests that fermented rice bran extract contains natural antioxidants. The contents of bioactive materials (e.g., polyphenolic compounds and flavonoids), antioxidative properties (DPPH (α,α'- diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging activity, Fe reducing, Cu reducing power, peroxidation of linoleic acid and rat hepatocyte microsome) were tested by in vitro experimental models using fermented rice bran (FRB) extract. The concentrations of phenolic compound and flavonoid were 19.92 mg/g and 11.56 mg/g, respectively. In oxidation in vitro models using DPPH free radical scavenging activity, (free radical scavenging activity 69.8%) Fe reducing power and Cu reducing power (effect of dose-dependent manner), Fe2+/ascorbate induced linolenic acid peroxidation by ferric thiocyanate and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) methods (inhibition activity 81%), and autooxidation of rat hepatic microsomes membrane (lipid peroxidation inhibition activity 38%), antioxidative activities were stronger in FRB extract than FRS (Fermented Rice and Soybean, positive control) extract and, these effects were dose-dependent manner. From these results, FRB extract was shown to have the most potent antioxidative properties and contain the highest amounts of antioxidative compounds such as phenolic compounds and flavonoids. Overall, these results may provide the basic data to understand the antioxidative properties of fermented rice bran for development of functional foods.

  • Efficiency estimation of toxicity free resistance cable experiments were conducts to understand toxicity free fire ersistance polyolefin insulation material and smoke density characteristic and combustion gas corrosion analysis. A main cause of fire-growth and generating toxic gas when it burns, should be dealt with great care in life safety design. Similar patterned fire incidents such as, Inchon Live-Hof Pub Restaurant as, Sea-land Children Resort have proven that serious loss of lives were caused by hazardous gas generated fire resistance cable materials. In this paper, Referenced documents were ASTM E662 standard test method for specific Ds genalated by solid materials. The furnace control system shall maintain the required irradiance level under steady-state condition with the chamber door closed of 2.5$\pm40.04〔w/$\textrm{cm}^2$〕for 20 min. According to the results of the smoke density analysis of NFR-8 and FR-PVC the highest decomposition flaming smoke density range of NFR-8 and FR-PVC were 25.2 to 37.5 and 51.1 respectively. Nonflaming smoke density range of NFR-8 and FR-PVC were 100.4 to 112.2 and 126.5 to 398.8. Also, the fire gases was occurred carbon monoxide and decomposition than in polyolefin due to incomplete combustion of PVC which has high content of carbon in chemical compound.

  • The possibility of shellfish utilization of juice as seasoning materials was examined through the analyzing proximate compositions and N-containing materials. The amounts of the sucking liquid wastes were estimated as 58,819 tons for oyster, 764 tons for pen-shell, 604 tons for cockle and 3,896 tons for blue-mussel from 1985 to 1990 in Korea. Water contents ranged from 95.2 to $97.4\%$ and crude protein level was $1.0{\sim}1.4\%$. Taurine was the most abundant nitrogenous compound($40{\sim}56\%$) in extracts, and glycine($10.4{\sim}36.1\%$), alanine($4.8{\sim}8.6\%$) and glutamic acid($3.1{\sim}5.3\%$) followed. More than $40\%$ of ADP and AMP as mucleotide were contained in all shellfish samples but pen-shell and cockle had $20\%$ of inosine, also. Glycinebetaine was present in corcentrations of 139.8mg/g in oyster and $45.5{\sim}61.9mg/100g$ in pen-shell, cockle and blue-mussel. Total creatinine and trimethylamine oxide levels were $30.4{\sim}59.1mg/100g$ and $0.82{\sim}47.2mg/100g$, respectively.

Development of Meat-like Flavor by Maillard Reaction with Addition of Natural Flavoring Materials (천연 조미향상물질의 첨가에 의한 Maillard 반응에서 Meat-like Flavor의 개발)

  • Addition of three natural flavoring materials, hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP), hydrolyzed animal protein (HAP) and yeast extract (YE), into 0.2 M cystine-0.1 M lactose-0.1 M maltose solution (control) was studied for development of meat-like flavor by Maillard reaction. The HVP, HAP and YE were added individually at various concentrations and were mixed at selected concentration in order to compare their effects. The absorbance, color, sensory characteristics and volatile compounds of the solutions after the reaction at $100^{\circ}C$ for 8 hr were measured. The results showed that the absorbances of reaction solution at 420 nm and 278 nm were increased as reaction time and the concentration of the natural flavoring material increased. Also ‘L’ values of reaction solutions added with HVP, HAP or YE decreased while the ‘b’ value increased slightly. From the results of sensory evaluation 1.16% HVP, 0.94% HAP, 1.48% YE or 1.16% HVP + 0.94% HAP were selected as the appropriate substrates for the meat-like flavor development. The volatile compounds identified by GC/MS for the control and those added with 1.16% HVP or 1.16% HVP+0.94% HAP were 1 hydrocarbons, 9 aldehydes, 5 ketones, 1 ester, 5 alcohols, 2 aromatics(benzene), 2 furans, 1 sulfur compound.

Attenuation of Atherosclerosis by 3,4-Dihydroxy-Hydrocinnamic Acid in Rabbits by Partial Inhibition of ACAT (토끼에서 ACAT 억제에 의한 3,4-다이하이드록시 하이드로시나믹산의 동맥경화 완화 효과)

  • Polyphenols have been reported to have beneficial effects on cardiovascular disease. A polyphenolic compound, 3,4-dihydroxy-hydrocinnamic acid (3,4-DHHCA), has been shown to have antioxidative and antitumorigenic activities. However, the effect of 3,4-DHHCA on atherosclerosis is still unknown. Herein, we investigated the effects of 3,4-DHHCA on atherosclerosis in New Zealand White rabbits. Broad and fused fatty streak lesions were found in rabbits fed with high-cholesterol diet for 8 weeks. Administration of 3,4-DHHCA reduced atherosclerotic lesion formation and lesional accumulation of macrophage in rabbits fed with cholesterol diet without systemic or local toxicity. Hepatic acyl-coenzyme A: cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT) activity was decreased after treatment with 3,4-DHHCA by 22% in cholesterol diet-fed rabbits compared with the control group. These results indicate that 3,4-DHHCA had antiatherogenic effects in rabbits, possibly by partial inhibition of ACAT.

  • To see the effect of chemical surface modification, the carbon black surfaces were treated with three types of chemicals (KOH, $H_3PO_4$, and benzene). Vulcanization and mechanical properties of a styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) were investigated depending on the chemical treatments. The surface free energy increased considerably with the treatments by both the acid (HCB) and base (KCB), but only a slight increase was observed for benzene treatment(BCB). The BCB showed the highest level of the London dispersive component. The vulcanization reaction was found to be faster in the order of KCB-SBR> BCB-SBR> VCB-SBR(virgin) > HCB-SBR. The difference in minimum and maximum torque of rheocurve, representing the degree of crosslinking, was found to be higher for the BCB-SBR compared to those of VCB-SBR, KCB-SBR, and HCB-SBR. The BCB-SBR and KCB-SBR showed the improved tensile and dynamic mechanical properties. A linear relationship was found to exist between the London dispersive component of surface free energy and mechanical properties.

  • Green-emission intensity of a $Zn_{2-x}Mn_xSiO_4$ phosphor, which is a potential candidate as a green component in PDP device, significantly increases provided that the compound is additionally heat treated at 900$^{\circ}C$ after solid state reaction at 1300$^{\circ}C$. In order to verify origin of such an intensity enhancement after the additional heat treatment in association with the electronic and local structural change at around Mn ions, the Mn K-edge X-ray absorption spectra were recorded. From the analyses of the preedge peak corresponding to $1s{\rightarrow}3d$ bound state transition and XANES spectrum, it is known that most Mn ions are in +2 oxidation state and substitute Zn ion site regardless of the thermal treatment. In addition, EXAFS analyses revealed that Mn ions formed $MnO_4$ tetrahedra with the Mn-O bond length shortened by 0.01${\AA}$ and with reduced Debye-Waller factor in the thermally treated sample.

  • $ZrV_{0.1}Mn_{0.7}Ni_{1.2}$ alloy ingot (bulk alloy) made by the arc melting was found to be consisting of mostly of $ZrV_{0.2}Mn_{0.98}Ni_{1.04}$ matrix alloy and $ZrV_{0.01}Mn_{0.13}Ni_{1.2}$ 2nd phase alloy. The former alloy had the form of the C15 type Laves alloy structure and the latter one had the intermetallic compound structure of $Zr_9Ni_{11}$. In order to investigate the effect of these two phases on the electrochemical charge-discharge characteristics of bulk $ZrV_[0.1}Mn_0.7}Ni_{1.2}$ alloy, the matrix and the 2nd phase alloys were fabricated separately by arc melting method and their electrochemical characteristics were studied and compared with the bulk alloy. It was found that the discharge capacity was the lowest of 160 mAh/g in the 2nd phase alloy. The matrix alloy exhibited 200 mAh/g. Both were lower than that of the bulk alloy of 250 mAh/g. The matrix and the bulk alloys showed a similar properties in the activation stage, the high rate dischargeability and the self discharge characteristics. Also a signigicant capacity decrease was observed after activation in both alloys. Whereas the 2nd phase alloy showed the very different characteristics. This alloy was found to be difficult to activate. However the capacity was remained constant after the activation. Also the self discharge rate was seen to be better than those of the matrix and the bulk alloys.

  • The effect of PCB and BGA pad designs was investigated on the mechanical property of Pb-free solder joints. The mechanical property of solder joint was tested by three different test methods of drop impact tests, bending impact test, and high speed shear test. Two kinds of pad design such as NSMD (Non-Solder Mask Defined) and SMD (Solder Mask Defined) were applied with the OSP finished Pb-free solder (Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu, Sn-1.2Ag-0.5Cu). in the drop impact test and bending impact test, the characterized lifetime showed the same tendency, and SMD design showed better mechanical property of solder joint than NSMD regardless of test method, which was due to the different crack path. The fracture crack on SMD pad was propagated along the intermetallic compound (IMC) layer of solder joint, while the fracture crack on NSMD pad propagated through upper edge of land which shields pattern. In the high speed shear test, pad lift occurred on the solder joint of NSMD. SMD/SMD combination of pad design consequently illustrated the best mechanical property of BGA/PCB solder joint, followed by SMD/NSMD, NSMD/SMD, and NSMD/NSMD.

Electrochemical Stability of Co-Mo and Ni-Mo Intermetallic Compound Electrodes for Hydrogen Electrode of Alkaline Fuel Cell (알칼리형 연료전지의 수소극용 Co-Mo 및 Ni-Mo 금속간화합물 전극의 전기화학적 안정성)

  • The Electrochemical stabilities of the Brewer-Engel type intermetallic compounds of Co-Mo $(35 wt\%)$ and Ni-Mo$(35 wt\%)$ manufactured by the arc-melting method for the hydrogen electrode of $H_2-O_2$ alkaline fuel cell were investigated. Effects of temperature and concentration on the electrochemical behavior of the electrodes in the $80^{\circ}C$ 6 N KOH solution deaerated with $N_2$ gas were studied by electrochemical methods. The effect of overpotential on the electrochemical stabilities of Co-Mo and Ni-Mo intermetallic compounds was also discussed under the normal operation condition of AFC. It was shown that Co-Mo electrode had lower electrochemical stability as compared to Ni-Mo. In the case of Co-Mo electrode, a simultaneous dissolution of cobalt and molybdenum has occurred at low anodic overpotential form equilibrium hydrogen electrode potential, but the dissolution of cobalt was serious, and Co(OH)l layer on the electrode surface formed at the high anodic overpotential. In contrast the Ni-Mo electrode had high electrochemical stability because formation of the dense and thin protective $Ni(OH)_2$ layer prevented the dissolution of molybdenum.
