  • Steel lining board usually is used as a floor on the temporary steel bridges. It also is installed in the subway construction site. However, in particular in subway construction, renovations and site of old bridges, these steel lining board structures have a problem such as noise, accidents and slip hazards. So steel composite lining board is being developed to solve this problem. Steel composite lining board consists of compressive concrete showing excellent performance in slip, durability, resistance and noise, lower tensile and shear steel showing high safety, effective and superior workability in many respects. Steel composite lining board structure gradually is used in many construction sites, because it has a high quality such as durability, little noise and slip. In this study, flexural tests of steel composite lining board in accordance with welding patterns were conducted to compare the performance of the structure.

  • A huge offshore structures such as immersed tunnel, ice-resisting wall are continuously subjected to large force from water pressure, wave action and impact loads. Composite steel-concrete structure of sandwich system has profitable advantages for a huge offshore structures. This composite structures should exhibit a high degree of strength and ductility, because of concrete confining effect and the property of steel plate. Therefore, it endures large deformation and absorbs a great deal of energy until failure. In this study, nonlinear analysis for composite steel-concrete structure of sandwich system was carried out, and certify the effects of various parameters, elastic·plastic behavior characteristic, load-carrying and failure mechanism.

  • Fire is one of the environmental parameters affecting the structure causing element internal forces to change, as well as reducing the strength of the materials. One of the common types of floors in tall steel structures is the steel concrete composite slab. Shear connectors are used in steel and concrete composite beam in various shapes also has played significant role in a burning fire event of building with a steel concrete composite beam. The current study has reviewed the effects of temperature raising on the angle connector behavior through the use of push out tests and monotonic static force. The results have shown (1) the ductility of the samples is acceptable based on EC4 standard; (2) temperature raising has reduced the stiffness; (3) the shear ductility increment; and (4) the shear capacity reduction. Also, the amount of angle shear connector resistance has been decreased from 18.5% to 41% at ambient temperature up to $850^{\circ}C$.

  • A number of desirable characteristics concerning excellent durability, aesthetics, recyclability, high ductility and fire resistance have made stainless steel a preferred option in engineering practice. However, the relatively high initial cost has greatly restricted the application of stainless steel as a major structural material in general construction. This drawback can be partially overcome by introducing composite stainless steel-concrete structures, which provides a cost-efficient and sustainable solution for future stainless steel construction. This paper presents a preliminary numerical study on stainless steel-concrete composite beam-to-column joints with bolted flush endplates. In order to ensure a consistent corrosion resistance within the whole structural system, all structural steel components were designed with austenitic stainless steel, including beams, columns, endplates, bolts, reinforcing bars and shear connectors. A finite element model was developed using ABAQUS software for composite beam-to-column joints under monotonic and symmetric hogging moments, while validation was performed based on independent test results. A parametric study was subsequently conducted to investigate the effects of several critical factors on the behaviour of composite stainless steel joints. Finally, comparisons were made between the numerical results and the predictions by current design codes regarding the plastic moment capacity and the rotational stiffness of the joints. It was concluded that the present codes of practice generally overestimate the rotational stiffness and underestimate the plastic moment resistance of stainless steel-concrete composite joints.

  • Making full use of material strength, maintaining sufficient ductility of structural components, and ensuring simple and robust connections are crucial to the development of steel-concrete composite structures. The steel-tubed concrete structure uses thin-walled steel tube to provide confinement, so that the strength and ductility of the concrete core are improved. Meanwhile, the thin-walled steel tube is terminated at the beam-column joint to avoid the local buckling problem and simplify the connections between steel tube and RC members. A brief overview of the development of steel-tubed concrete structures is presented. Through the discussion on the structural behavior of steel-tubed concrete and the introduction of typical practical projects, the prospects for future research are highlighted.

  • In this paper, a simplified approach based on critical temperature for fire resistance design of steel-concrete composite beams is proposed. The method for determining the critical temperature and fire protection of the composite beams is developed on the basis of load-bearing limit state method employed in current Chinese Technical Code for Fire safety of Steel Structure in Buildings. Parameters affecting the critical temperature of the composite beams are analysed. The results show that at a definite load level, section shape of steel beams, material properties, effective width of concrete slab and concrete property model have little influence on the critical temperature of composite beams. However, the fire duration and depth of concrete slab have significant influence on the critical temperature. The critical temperatures for commonly used composite beams, at various depth of concrete and fire duration, are given to provide a reference for engineers. The validity of the practical approach for predicting the critical temperature of the composite beams is conducted by comparing the prediction of a composite beam with the results from some fire design codes and full scale fire resistance tests on the composite beam.

  • This paper presents the thermal problems of steel-concrete composite structure and the basic references in placing concrete into the structure. Based on the analytical investigation, application of the composite structure has the effect of highly decreasing the temperature difference between the center section and the surface section of the structure, though its application has little influence on the decrement of the maximum temperature under the same using material and placing temperature. Meanwhile, its application causes the section decrement of a concrete structure, and in the section which the decrement ratio is relatively large, the restraint action by a old concrete structure takes place highly tensile stresses over a tensile strength. And, the stress is concentrated on sharp edges of the steel-concrete boundary. Both restraint action and stress concentration considerably decrease the reduction effect of the temperature difference. Therefore, the prediction of thermal response and the reasonable steps are required through the simulation considering the factors and the sections related to those problems.

  • An experimental investigation of composite beams composed of wide flange steel and precast concrete is presented. The bottom flange of the steel section is encased in precast concrete. The composite beams tested in this study were designed to reduce the depth of the slab and beam. The slabs are constructed on top of the edges of the Structural Composite Hybrid System, instead of on top of the steel flange, decreasing the depth of the beams. When concrete is cast on the metal deck plate located on the edges of the precast concrete, the weight of the concrete slabs and other construction loads must be supported by the contacts between the steel and the precast concrete. This interface must not exhibit bearing failures, shear failures, and failures caused by torque due to the loading of the precast concrete. When the contact area between the concrete and the bottom flange of the steel beam is small, these failures of the concrete are likely and must be prevented. The premature failure of precast concrete must not also be present when the weight of the concrete slabs and other construction loads is loaded. This paper presents a load carrying capacity of Structural Composite Hybrid System in order to observe the failure mode. The symmetrically distributed loading that caused the failure of the composite beam was found. The paper also provides design recommendations of such type of composite structure.

  • Ultra-lightweight cement composite (ULCC) with a compressive strength of 60 MPa and density of $1,450kg/m^3$ has been developed and used in the steel-concrete-steel (SCS) sandwich structures. This paper investigates the structural performances of SCS sandwich composite beams with ULCC as filled material. Overlapped headed shear studs were used to provide shear and tensile bond between the face plate and the lightweight core. Three-dimensional nonlinear finite element (FE) model was developed for the ultimate strength analysis of such SCS sandwich composite beams. The accuracy of the FE analysis was established by comparing the predicted results with the quasi-static tests on the SCS sandwich beams. The FE model was also applied to the nonlinear analysis on curved SCS sandwich beam and shells and the SCS sandwich beams with J-hook connectors and different concrete core including ULCC, lightweight concrete (LWC) and normal weight concrete (NWC). Validations were also carried out to check the accuracy of the FE analysis on the SCS sandwich beams with J-hook connectors and curved SCS sandwich structure. Finally, recommended FE analysis procedures were given.

  • Topology optimization of steel and concrete composite based on truss-like material model is studied in this paper. First, the initial design domain is filled with concrete, and the steel is distributed in it. The problem of topology optimization is to minimize the volume of steel material and solved by full stress method. Then the optimized steel and concrete composite truss-like continuum is obtained. Finally, the distribution of steel material is determined based on the optimized truss-like continuum. Several numerical results indicate the numerical instability and rough boundary are settled. And more details of manufacture and construction can be presented based on the truss-like material model. Hence, the truss-like material model of steel and concrete is efficient to establish the distribution of steel material in concrete.
