  • Strength and failure of adhesively bonded carbon composite-to-aluminum single-lap joints were studied by experiment. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of various parameters such as curing pressure for bonding, overlap lengths, and adherend thickness on the failure loads and modes of the bonded Joints with dissimilar materials. Experimental results show that the bonding pressure for composite-to-aluminum dissimilar materials should be 4 atm at the lowest. Failure load of the joints increases as the overlap length increases, but the strength (failure load divided by bonded area) decreases rapidly after the overlap width-to-length ratio is greater than 1. When the adherend thickness increase to double, bonding strength increase $12{\sim}55%$. Major failure mode of the joints is the delamination in the composite laminate and the location of delamination goes deeper into the laminates as the bonding pressure and overlap length increase.

  • Nano-composite solders have been studied to improve the properties of Pb-free solder joints. The nanoparticles in the composite solders were carbon nanotubes(CNTs), metals (Ag, Ni, Cr, etc.), ceramics (SiC, $ZrO_2$, $TiB_2$, etc.). To fabricate the nano-composite solders, mechanical mixing methods and in-situ fabrication method has been used for well-dispersed nano phase. The characteristic properties of the nano-composite solders were high creep resistance, low undercooling, low IMC growth rate and fine microstructures. More researches on the nano-composite solders are required to improve the processibility and the reliability of the nano-composite solder joints.

  • A finite element method based on the two-dimensional progressive failure analysis considering material nonlinearity is presented for characterizing the strength and failure of the unidirectional-fabric hybrid laminated composite joints under pin loading. The 8-node laminated shell element is incorporated in the updated Lagrangian formulation. Failure criteria including the Maximum Stress and Tsai-Wu are used in conjunction with the complete unloading stiffness degradation method. For the verification, joint tests are conducted for the specimens with two different ply-number ratios of UD composite to fabric composite. Although there are some differences depending on ply-number ratios, the finite element model using the maximum stress criterion considering nonlinear material behavior predicts the failure strength best.

  • As a preliminary study for the three dimensional failure analysis of composite joints, the three dimensional stress analysis on a pin-loaded unidirectional-fabric hybrid composite joints are performed. The contact and frictions between composite plate and metal bush are considered in the finite element method by NASTRAN. Experiments are conducted to validate the accuracy and feasibility of the finite element technique for 25 specimens with 5 different geometries. The finite element and experimental results show the bush cap induces the unsymmetric deformation, stress distribution, and failure behavior through the thickness. The experiment also shows the failure loads are higher in the joint with bush cap than without it.

  • This paper presents an experimental study to assess the effectiveness of using ferrocement to strengthen deficient beam-column joints. Ferrocement is proposed to protect the joint region through replacing concrete cover. Six exterior beam-column joints, including two control specimens and four strengthened specimens, are prepared and tested under constant axial load and quasi-static cyclic loading. Two levels of axial load on column (0.2fc'Ag and 0.4fc'Ag) and two types of skeletal reinforcements in ferrocement (grid reinforcements and diagonal reinforcements) are considered as test variables. Experimental results have indicated that ferrocement as a composite material can enhance the seismic performance of deficient beam-column joints in terms of peak horizontal load, energy dissipation, stiffness and joint shear strength. Shear distortions within the joints are significantly reduced for the strengthened specimens. High axial load (0.4fc'Ag) has a detrimental effect on peak horizontal load for both control and ferrocement-strengthened specimens. Specimens strengthened by ferrocement with two types of skeletal reinforcements perform similarly. Finally, a method is proposed to predict shear strength of beam-column joints strengthened by ferrocement.

  • This paper presents a useful in-plane structural analysis of low-rise blind-bolted composite frames with semi-rigid joints. Analytical models were used to predict the moment-rotation relationship of the composite beam-to-column flush endplate joints that produced accurate and reliable results. The comparisons of the analytical model with test results in terms of the moment-rotation response verified the robustness and reliability of the model. Abaqus software was adopted to conduct frame analysis considering the material and geometrical non-linearities. The flexural behaviour of the composite frames was studied by applying the lateral loads incorporating wind and earthquake actions according to the Australian standards. A wide variety of frames with a varied number of bays and storeys was analysed to determine the bending moment envelopes under different load combinations. The design models were finalized that met the strength and serviceability limit state criteria. The results from the frame analysis suggest that among lateral loads, wind loads are more critical in Australia as compared to the earthquake loads. However, gravity loads alone govern the design as maximum sagging and hogging moments in the frames are produced as a result of the load combination with dead and live loads alone. This study provides a preliminary analysis and general understanding of the behaviour of low rise, semi-continuous frames subjected to lateral load characteristics of wind and earthquake conditions in Australia that can be applied in engineering practice.

  • Application of composite structures on naval ships strongly depends on the mechanical strength and collapse behavior of the T-joints of the whole structure. Because of the weight advantages over single skin composite and bolt fastening joining, three types of T-joints using both honeycomb sandwich composite and adhesive bonding were suggested to determine the effect of T-joint configuration. It was found that joining with a urethane foam block and overlaminates using the secondary co-bonding technique improves T-joint strength.

  • As the use of composites has become popular in recent years, the design of the composite joints has become a very important research area because the structural efficiency of the composite structure is determined by its joints, not by its basic structures. In this paper, presented comparisons of numerical results by the FAI(Failure area index) method[9] and measured data for a various geometric shapes and stacking sequence justify the validity of the FAI method. The FAI method is shown to produce very favorable comparisons with measured failure loads of mechanically fastened composite joints with the difference well within 9.96% for all II cases investigated.

  • The connection of the steel structure serves to transmit external forces to the main components. The same is true for the behavior of modular systems composed mainly of steel or composite members. In this study, the joint performance of the composite and steel modules proposed was evaluated. The analytical models of the two joint types were constructed and were subjected to cyclic loading to assess the safety and the energy dissipation capacity of the joint types. The analysis results of the joints showed that the joints of the modular systems remain stable when the joint rotation reached the seismic performance limit state of the 0.02 rad required for steel intermediate moment frame. It was also observed that the joint of the composite modular system showed higher energy dissipation capacity compared with the steel modular system.

  • The failure strengths and modes in carbon fiber reinforced polymeric composites, with two serial bolt-fastened composite joints, were investigated to evaluate the typical joint configurations of composite components. The parametric studies were performed experimentally at room temperature dry and elevated temperature wet, $82.2^{\circ}C$ on several different laminate configurations. Based on the experimental data presented, two basic load-displacements curves are observed. Each failure mode has the characteristic curve. It is showed that the bearing failure mode occurs in elevated temperature wet condition. It is analysed that the strength of bearing failure mode is not highly depending on the effective modulus of specimen. The failure strength at elevated temperature wet is decreased by the cause of interfacial deterioration between fiber and matrix with moisture absorption.
