Nearly 400 composite railway bridge decks of a new kind belonging to the trough type with U-shaped cross section have been constructed in Belgium over the last fifteen years. The construction of these bridge decks is rather complex with the preflexion of precambered steel girders, the prestressing of a concrete slab and the addition of a 2nd phase concrete. Until now, they have been designed with a classical computation method using a pseudo-elastic analysis with modular ratios. Globally, they perform according to the expectations but variability has been observed between the measured and the computed camber of these bridge decks just after the transfer of prestressing and also at long-term. A statistical analysis of the variability of the relative difference between the measured camber and the computed camber is made for a sample of 36 bridge decks using no less than 10 variables. The most significant variables to explain this variability at prestressing are the ratio between the maximum tensile stress reached in the steel girders during the preflexion and the yield strength and the type of steel girder. For the same sample, the long-term camber under permanent loading is computed by two methods and compared with measurements taken one or two years after the construction. The camber computed by the step-by-step method shows a better agreement with the measured camber than the camber computed by the classical method. The purpose of the paper is to report on the statistical analysis which was used to determine the most significant parameters to consider in the modeling in order to improve the prediction of the behaviour of these composite railway bridge decks.

Structural tests of the PSC Beam bridge using high strength concrete, concrete compressive strength 700kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, are conducted for the application including durability and serviceability of the bridge. Current design safety factors with respect to the jacking force and the service design load DB-24 are applied to the design of the bridge. Concrete compressive strength 700kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, girder depth 2.3m, girder space 3.2m, span length 20m, and slab thickness 27cm are selected for the bridge test. The Bulb-Tee section of the girders is applied instead of I section because it is well known more stable to the longer span(40m). Static load test(4 beams) with composite and non-composite section, and fatigue load test(1 beams) with composite section are conducted. Crack moment, ultimate load, deflections with load steps, and strains of the beam section for those bridges are investigated. The structural test results of the bridges showed a good performance for a safety and a serviceability.
Traffic flow capacity of some old road bridges is insufficient due to limited deck width. In such cases bridge deck widening is a common solution. For multi-girder reinforced concrete (RC) bridges it is possible to add steel-concrete composite girders as the new outermost girders. The deck widening may be combined with bridge strengthening thanks to thickening of the existing deck slab. Joint action of the existing and the added parts of such bridge span must be ensured. It refers especially to the horizontal plane at the interface of the existing slab and the added concrete layer as well as to the vertical planes at the external surfaces of the initially outermost girders where the added girders are connected to the existing bridge span. Since the distribution of the added concrete is non-uniform in the span cross-section the structure is particularly sensitive to the added concrete shrinkage. The shrinkage induces shear forces in the aforementioned planes. Widening of a 12 m long RC multi-girder bridge span is numerically analysed to assess the influence of the added concrete shrinkage. The analysis results show that: a) in the vertical plane of the connection of the added and the existing deck slab the longitudinal shear due to the shrinkage of the added concrete is comparable with the effect of live load, b) it is necessary to provide appropriate longitudinal reinforcement in the deck slab over the added girders due to tension induced by the shrinkage of the added concrete.
Since Modern bridges have a tendency to make the spans continuous and longer, the effect of concrete shrinkage and creep is very important and must be evaluated appropriately for the durability and safety of steel-concrete composite bridges. However, highway design specification in current use prescribes $180^{1\;2}$ as the final shrinkage strain. which is for less value than one resulted from many experimental researches and cause some problems in the construction of composite bridges due to the understimation of shrinkage strain. Thus, in this paper nonlinear analysis with time-steps applying the CEB-FIP(90) provision have been conducted for plate girder bridge, box girder bridge and Preflex beam bridge and the linear equivalent shrinkage strain for the design of composite bridges. which produces the stress equal to the values from the nonlinear analysis, has been calculated by comparing the results with the values following highway design specification. The results yield appropriately double values than $180^{1\;2}$ which highway design specification prescribes.
This study examines the influence of curved, steel, I-girder bridge configuration on girder end reactions and cross frame member forces during seismic events. Simply-supported bridge finite element models were created and examined under seismic events mimicking what could be experienced in AASHTO Seismic Zone 2. Bridges were analyzed using practical ranges of: radius of curvature; girder and cross frame spacings; and lateral bracing configuration. Results from the study indicated that: (1) radius of curvature had the greatest influence on seismic response; (2) interior (lowest radius) girder reactions were heavily influenced by parameter variations and, in certain instances, uplift at their bearings could be a concern; (3) vertical excitation more heavily influenced bearing and cross frame seismic response; and (4) lateral bracing helped reduce seismic effects but using bracing along the entire span did not provide additional benefit over placing bracing only in bays adjacent to the supports.
A through-railway bridge with an inclined girder has recently been applied to optimize the cross-section of a slender bridge structure in railway bridges. To achieve the additional cross-section optimization effect by the bolted end-plate connection, it is necessary to investigate the application of the bolted end-plate tension connection between the inclined girder and the crossbeam. This basic study was conducted on the application of the bolted end-plate moment connection of crossbeams to half-through girders with inclined webs. The combined behavior of vertical deflection and rotational behavior was observed due to the effect of the web inclination in the inclined girder where the steel crossbeam was connected to the girder by the bolted end-plate moment connection. Therefore, in the experiment, the deflection of the inclined girder was 1.77-2.93 times greater than that of the vertical girder but the lateral deflection of the inclined girder was 0.4 times less than that of the vertical girder. Moreover, the tensile stress of the upper bolts in the inclined girder with low crossbeams was clearly 0.81 times lower than that of the vertical girder. According to the results, the design formula for vertical girders does not reflect the influence of the web inclination. Therefore, this study proposed the design procedures for the inclined girder to apply the bolted end-plate moment connection of the crossbeam to the inclined girder by reflecting the design change factors according to the effect of the web inclination.

In this paper, flexural test, girder-connection test and barrier-connection test for the pultruded composite bridge deck of hollow section, were carried out and its structural characteristics were evaluated. In the flexural test specimen, deflection was measured at center of the span and strains were measured at various locations to see the structural behavior up to the failure. In addition, finite element analysis was performed for the flexural test specimen and the results were compared with experiments, and load carrying capacity was evaluated. Also, field load test was conducted for the demonstration plate girder bridge and other field applications were described.

This study was performed to propose design bending moment formula for long-span slab on a composite two-girder bridge. FEM models representing slab spaning between 4m and 12m were analyzed, and parameters such as girder flexibility and orthotropy of slab were considered. By regression of the parametric analyses results, the moment formula that can predict the design moment with reasonable margin of safety and correctness was developed. The research also showed that the design bending moment from Korean Bridge Design Code overestimated the design moment for the span length under gm, and underestimated for the span length over 9m.

The temperature difference of deck and girder is one of the major factors that affect the stress distribution of a section, and therefore, the design of a composite girder bridge. However, domestic design codes of highway and railway bridges, respectively, present different shapes of design equations regarding the temperature difference, which may induce some confusion to the designers. In this study, each design equation is investigated on a theoretical basis and compared together. Some other methodologies such as finite element method and other equations from a different point of view are also taken into account for further comparison. An example of a railway bridge is presented to verify the result of each scheme.
There are more than 800 railway steel plate girder bridges which are in use and the total length is approximately 50 km. Among these, it shall be pointed out that non-ballast rail systems which lay on wood sleepers are the most critical members. To strengthen this type of structures, mainly two methods have been applied. The first one is the most typical method which is to replace the girders with slab girder system or steel composite girders and to add ballast. It is not uncommon that the construction cost of substructure is more than ten time higher than that of superstructures and even in this case, the structural uncertainty for the substructures is not diminished. To resolve above mentioned problems, new method was developed to rehabilitate railway steel girder bridge by adding PC-slab using transport equipment. Using this method, substructure strengthen is rarely required because the additional weight to the bridge superstructure is only up to 1.0t/m. Also it was possible to save the construction cost by reducing construction duration and by simplifying the construction process. Experimental construction was performed for Jewon bridge and measurements were performed before and after construction to verify the bridge capacity.
