Dynamic responses of steel composite bridges for the Korean high-speed railway are analyzed by a modal analysis. The bridge is modeled as a simply supported beam structure and a vehicle of TGV-K is modeled using a moving load assumption. When the train is moving on a bridge, its deck shows resonance phenomenon at a critical velocity. However, it is observed that the dynamic response is greatly reduced at a special range of the span length. The results show that the reduction effect should be considered ill designing the railway bridges. A parametric study of tile dynamic response is performed for different span lengths, and specific train speeds train should be considered in designing the high speed railway bridge are suggested.

This study is focused on evaluation of the structural behavior of skewed bridge during earthquake. The variation of natural frequencies and the lateral forces at pier shoes by the skewness and the rotational effect about vertical axis of skewed bridge due to seismic activity are analytically evaluated and identified through case studies. For this purpose, the composite steel girder highway bridges are selected as case study models. The seismic analyses by response spectrum method and time history method are performed for the selected models. It has been recognized that the frequency of longitudinal model increased as the skew angle decreased, while the lateral mode frequency showed the opposite trends. When the skew angle decreased, longitudina seismic forces of the bridge at the pier were increased but decreased in transverse direction. And it also has been found that the skewed bridges of the case study models showed the rotational behavior about vertical axis due to motion of San Fernando earthquake at Pacoima Dam.

New information technology developments continue to have a significant impact on civil engineering fields. The objective of this study is to develop STEP-based database which will be able to store and manipulate the information of steel bridges over the life cycle. In this study, there are three steps to fulfil the objective to build database and develop the application module for that data model practically and effectively To begin with, STEP methodology for a development of data model has been used for modelling data structure. And then the data model for a steel bridge's shape and structural analysis information has been made up by using AP203 (configuration controlled design) and AP203 (composite and metallic structural analysis and related design) which are the international standard in STEP Lastly, the application module for an access to information of steel bridges has been developed by means of already made database. This study show efficiently the prototype of developing information system with the existing standard technology in civil engineering fields.

Recently, an improved capacity for RC bridges is required by their deterioration or necessary to carry traffic increase. Strengthening is known as a better way to improve capacity of bridges than reconstructing. Fiber Reinforced Plastics (FRP) is introduced as one of the best strengthening structures in this paper. It is also known as an economical improvement. Therefore, FRP sheet and Glass Fiber-Steel Composite Plate (GSP) in this research were used in strengthening slab of RC bridges. Experimental data from the strengthening will be helpful to better understand the slab behavior and an effect of the strengthening.

Since improved capacity for RC bridges has been required due to deterioration or increase in traffic, the deflection of cracked reinforced concrete slabs need to be reconsidered. Strengthening is known as the better way to improve capacity of bridges than reconstructing. In this paper, Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) was introduced as one of the best strengthening methods for civil structures. The structures strengthened with FRPs can improve the strengthening capacity and serviceability. Therefore, CFRP sheet and Glass Fiber-Steel Composite Plate (GSP) in this research were used for strengthening slabs of RC bridges. Experimental data from the strengthening will be helpful to better understand the effect of the strengthening and effective flexural rigidity.
The paper presents a model for analysing the shear-lag effect on the slab of twin-girder composite decks subjected to static actions, support settlements and concrete shrinkage, which are the main actions of interest in composite bridge design. The proposed model includes concrete creep behaviour and shear connection flexibility. The shear-lag in the slab is accounted for by means of a new warping function. The considered actions are then applied to a realistic bridge deck and their effects are discussed. The proposed method is utilised to determine the slab effective widths for three different width-length ratios of the deck. Finally, a comparison between the results obtained with the Eurocode EC4-2 and those obtained with the proposed model is performed.

Due to many advantages such as lightweight, high durability and speedy construction, increasing number of bridges of various girder types are being built recently with glass-fiber reinforced composite deck. A profile of the composite deck, called 'Delta deck', is developed which has 3 trapezoidal cells of 200mm depth. This paper introduces how to develop 'Delta deck' and its application to the world largest composite-deck bridge, which is 300m long and 35m wide and is currently under construction.
In this study, an automated optimum design program for steel box girder bridges has been developed for the optimum design of composite steel box girder bridges. The design constraints required for the optimum design of steel box girder bridges are based on the Korean standard bridge specification. Considering characteristics of steel box girder bridges, several approximation techniques, such as artificial constraint deletion, variable linking and stress reanalysis technique etc. are also introduced to enhance the efficiency of optimization. The developed program is mainly composed of major sub-system modules including structural analysis module using commercial structural analysis program such as RM-SPACEFRAME, optimum design module, pre-process module for friendly user input, and post-processor module for office automation. In addition, in order to demonstrate the efficiency and applicability of the developed optimum design program for steel box girder bridges, a few numerical examples are applied. Based on the results of the application, it may be stated that the automatic optimum design program developed in this study can be a prototype model for the developement of optimum design program for other type of bridge.

The concept of horizontal shear connection utilization on wood-concrete beams intends to be an alternative connection detail for composite wood-concrete decks. The volume of sawn-wood is over three times more expensive than concrete, in Brazil. In order to be competitive in the Brazilian market we need a composite deck with the least amount of wood and a simple and inexpensive connection detail. This research project uses medium to high density tropical hardwoods managed from the Brazilian Amazon region and construction steel rods. The beams studied are composed of a bottom layer of staggered wood boards and a top layer of concrete. The wood members are laterally nailed together to form a wide beam, and horizontal rebar connectors are installed before the concrete layer is applied on top. Two sets of wood-concrete layered beams with horizontal rebar connectors (6 and 8) were tested in third-point loading flexural bending. The initial results reveal medium composite efficiency for the beams tested. An improvement on the previously conceived connection detail (set with six connectors) for the composite wood-concrete structural floor system was achieved by the set with eight connectors. The new layout of the horizontal rebar connectors added higher composite efficiency for the beams tested. Further analysis with advanced rigorous numerical Finite Element Modeling is suggested to optimize the connection parameters. Composite wood-concrete decks can attend a large demand for pedestrian bridges, as well as residential and commercial slabs in the Brazilian Amazon.
In North America, a large number of concrete old slab-on-steel girder bridges, classified noncomposite, were built without any mechanic connections. The stablizing effect due to slab/girder interface contact and friction on the steel girders was totally neglected in practice. Experimental results indicate that this effect can lead to a significant underestimation of the load-carrying capacity of these bridges. In this paper, the two major components-concrete slab and steel girders, are treat as two deformable bodies in contact. A finite element procedure with considering the effect of friction and contact for the analysis of concrete slab-on-steel girder bridges is presented. The interface friction phenomenon and finite element formulation are described using an updated configuration under large deformations to account for the influence of any possible kinematic motions on the interface boundary conditions. The constitutive model for frictional contact are considered as slip work-dependent to account for the irreversible nature of friction forces and degradation of interface shear resistance. The proposed procedure is further validated by experimental bridge models.
