Segmentally erected prestressed concrete box girder bridges have been widely used in Korean high speed railway. Segmental erection has been accomplished along the longitudinal direction and across the depth of cross section. The cross section is similar to a composite cross section, composed of old and new segments. Because these segments have different time-dependent creep and shrinkage properties, a stress redistribution takes place during the construction period. It is the main objective in this research to investigate this behavior. An actual bridge was instrumented with 96 vibrating wire embedded type strain gauges, 6 electronic type steel strain gauges, and 75 thermocouples. Two span continuous high speed railway bridge was selected. Two points of importance, such as the midpoint of the first span and the point of interior support, along the span of the girder were chosen to monitor the time dependent behaviors for an extended period of time. The data collection was starting just after concrete girder were cast and is still going on. According to the measured results, the strain distributions across the depth of the section at midspan and interior support were not continuous and the important redistribution of stresses takes place. Thus, rational design of prestressed concrete composite box girder bridges need.

In this paper, a method of increasing in load-carrying capacity is shown in two-span steel-concrete composite bridges strengthened by external tendons. An analytic expression for the increment of tendon force under external loads is derived using virtual work method for straight external tendons and a new rating factor equation is proposed. Considering the initial tendon force and its increment under external loads, an analytic procedure has been developed to calculate the number of tendons and the initial tendon force from the proposed rating factor equation. This method is used to verify a validity and rationality for an existing two-span composite steel-concrete bridge.

Concrete bridges with corrugated steel webs and prestressed by both internal and external tendons have emerged as one of the promising bridge forms. In view of the different behaviour of components and the large shear deformation of webs with negligible flexural stiffness, the assumption that plane sections remain plane may no longer be valid, and therefore the classical Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam models may not be applicable. In the design of this type of bridges, both the ultimate load and ductility should be examined, which requires the estimation of full-range behaviour. An analytical sandwich beam model and its corresponding beam finite element model for geometric and material nonlinear analysis are developed for this type of bridges considering the diaphragm effects. Different rotations are assigned to the flanges and corrugated steel webs to describe the displacements. The model accounts for the interaction between the axial and flexural deformations of the beam, and uses the actual stress-strain curves of materials considering their stress path-dependence. With a nonlinear kinematical theory, complete description of the nonlinear interaction between the external tendons and the beam is obtained. The numerical model proposed is verified by experiments.
Cross-beams of modern through truss bridges are connected to truss chord at its nodes and between them. It results in variable rotational end restraint for cross-beams, thus variable bending moment distribution. This feature is captured in three-dimensional modelling of through truss bridge structure. However, for preliminary design or rapid assessment of service load effects such technique of analysis may not be available. So an analytical method of assessment of rotational end restraint for cross-beam of through truss bridges was worked out. Two cases - nodal cross-beam and inter-nodal cross-beam - were analyzed. Flexural and torsional stiffness of truss members, flexural stiffness of deck members and axial stiffness of wind bracing members in the vicinity of the analyzed cross-beam were taken into account. The provision for reduced stiffness of the X-type wind bracing was made. Finally, general formula for assessment of rotational end restraint was given. Rotational end restraints for cross-beams of three railway through truss bridges were assessed basing on the analytical method and the finite element method (three-dimensional beam-element modelling). Results of both methods show good agreement. The analytical method is able to reflect effects of some structural irregularities. On the basis of the obtained results the general values of rotational end restraint for nodal and inter-nodal cross-beams of railway through truss bridges were suggested.

The influences of high speed train on the dynamic responses of steel composite railway bridges are investigated. The bridge system which has two I-girder and several cross beams is modeled with plate and frame elements. With assumption of concrete slabs are fully connected with steel girders, the offset between slabs and girders is modeled using constraint equation. The track system is modeled using beams on elastic foundation theory. And, the TGV train model is developed in 2-dimension considering bouncing and pitching motion. And braking action of vehicle is considered using speed dependent braking function. To investigate the behavior of bridges due to moving trains, parametric studies on the variation of natural frequency of bridge, speed parameter, vehicle modeling method, braking action of train, etc are performed.
The paper presents the study on a change in modal parameters and structural stiffness of cable-stayed Fiberline Bridge made entirely of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) composite used for 20 years in the fjord area of Kolding, Denmark. Due to this specific location the bridge structure was subjected to natural aging in harsh environmental conditions. The flexural properties of the pultruded GFRP profiles acquired from the analyzed footbridge in 1997 and 2012 were determined through three-point bending tests. It was found that the Young's modulus increased by approximately 9%. Moreover, the influence of the temperature on the storage and loss modulus of GFRP material acquired from the Fiberline Bridge was studied by the dynamic mechanical analysis. The good thermal stability in potential real temperatures was found. The natural vibration frequencies and mode shapes of the bridge for its original state were evaluated through the application of the Finite Element (FE) method. The initial FE model was created using the real geometrical and material data obtained from both the design data and flexural test results performed in 1997 for the intact composite GFRP material. Full scale experimental investigations of the free-decay response under human jumping for the experimental state were carried out applying accelerometers. Seven natural frequencies, corresponding mode shapes and damping ratios were identified. The numerical and experimental results were compared. Based on the difference in the fundamental natural frequency it was again confirmed that the structural stiffness of the bridge increased by about 9% after 20 years of service life. Data collected from this study were used to validate the assumed FE model. It can be concluded that the updated FE model accurately reproduces the dynamic behavior of the bridge and can be used as a proper baseline model for the long-term monitoring to evaluate the overall structural response under service loads. The obtained results provided a relevant data for the structural health monitoring of all-GFRP bridge.

The design comparison and flexural reliability analysis of continuous span composite plate girder bridges are performed. The girders are designed by the methods of allowable stress design (ASD) and load and resistance factor design (LRFD). For the LRFD design, the design specification under development mainly by KBRC, based on AASHTO-LRFD specification in case of steel structures, is applied with the newly proposed design live load which has been developed by analyzing domestic traffic statistics from highways and local roads. For the ASD based design, the current KHBDC code with DB-24 and DL-24 live loads is used. The longest span length for the 3-span continuous bridges with span arrangement ratio of 4:5:4 is assumed to be from 30 m to 80 m. The amount of steel, performance ratios, and governing design factors for the sections designed by the ASD and LRFD methods are compared. In the reliability analysis for the flexural failure of the sections designed by two methods, the statistical properties on flexural resistance based on the yield strength statistics for over 16,000 domestic structural steel samples are applied.
Cable-girder anchorage joint is the critical part of cable-supported bridges. Tensile-plate anchorage (TPA) is one of the most commonly used types of cable-girder anchorage joints in steel girder cable-supported bridges. In recent years, it has been proposed by bridge designers to apply TPA to concrete girder cable-supported bridges to form composite cable-girder anchorage joint (CCGAJ). In this paper, the mechanical performance of CCGAJ under tensile force is studied through experimental and numerical analyses. Firstly, the effects of the external prestressing (EP) and the bearing plate (BP) on the mechanical performance of CCGAJ were investigated through three tests. Then, finite element model was established for parametrical study, and was verified by the experimental results. Then, the effects of shear connector forms, EP, BP, vertical rebar rate, and perforated rebar rate on the tensile capacity of CCGAJ were investigated through numerical analyses. The results show that the tensile capacity of CCGAJ depends on the first row of PR. The failure mode of CCGAJ using headed stud connectors is to form a shear failure surface at the end of the studs while the failure mode using PBLs is similar to the bending of a deep girder. Finally, based on the strut-and-tie model (STM), a calculation method for CCGAJ tensile capacity was proposed, which has a high accuracy and can be used to calculate the tensile capacity of CCGAJ.

I-beam composite hollow slabs were proposed for long-span slabs and long-span bridges due to their higher stiffness and strength. However, the behavior of the composite slab is quite complicate and allowable stress design method is used for the design of the slab. In this paper, static tests on the composite hollow slabs were performed and their inelastic behavior was investigated. Ultimate strength of the composite slabs were evaluated and the contribution of each I-beam to the flexural strength of the slab was also estimated using the measured strain distribution. From the results of these experiments, I-beam composite hollow slabs can be designed by strength design method.
The paper concerns analysis of effects of shrinkage of slab concrete in a steel-concrete composite deck of a through truss bridge span. Attention is paid to the shrinkage alongside the span, i.e., transverse to steel-concrete composite cross-beams. So far this aspect has not been given much attention in spite of the fact that it affects not only steel-concrete decks of bridges but also steel-concrete floors of steel frame building structures. For the problem analysis a two-dimensional model is created. An analytical method is presented in detail. A set of linear equations is built to compute axial forces in members of truss girder flange and transverse shear forces in steel-concrete composite beams. Finally a case study is shown: test loading of twin railway truss bridge spans is described, verified FEM model of the spans is presented and computational results of FEM and the analytical method are compared. Conclusions concerning applicability of the presented analytical method to practical design are drawn. The presented analytical method provides satisfactory accuracy of results in comparison with the verified FEM model.
