This paper presents the flexural behaviour of stainless steel beam-to-tubular column joints with extended endplates subjected to static loading. Moment-rotation relationships were investigated numerically by using Abaqus software with geometric and material nonlinearity considered. The prediction of damages among components was achieved through ductile damage models, and the influence of initial geometric imperfections and residual stresses was evaluated in large fabricated stainless steel joints involving hollow columns and concrete-filled columns. Parametric analysis was subsequently conducted to assess critical factors that could affect the flexural performance significantly in terms of the initial stiffness and moment resistance. A comparison between codes of practice and numerical results was thereafter made, and design recommendations were proposed for further applications. Results suggest that the finite element model can predict the structural behaviour reasonably well with the component damage consistent with test outcomes. Initial geometric imperfections and residual stresses are shown to have little effect on the moment-rotation responses. A series of parameters that can influence the joint behaviour remarkably include the strain-hardening exponents, stainless steel strength, diameter of bolts, thickness of endplates, position of bolts, section of beams and columns. AS/NZS 2327 is more reliable to predict the joint performance regarding the initial stiffness and moment capacity compared to EN 1993-1-8.

The present paper tries to contribute fill the gap of application of the component method to tubular connections. For this purpose, one typical joint configuration in which just one component can be considered as active has been studied. These joints were selected as symmetrically loaded welded connections in which the beam width was the same as the column width. This focused the study on the component 'side walls of rectangular hollow sections (RHS) in tension/compression'. It should be one of the main components to be considered in welded unstiffened joints between I beams and RHS columns. Many experimental tests on double-sided I-beam-to-RHS-column joint with a width ratio 1 have been carried out by the authors and a finite element (FE) model was validated with their results. Then, some different analytical approaches for the component stiffness and strength have been assessed. Finally, the stiffness proposals have been compared with some FE simulations on I-beam-to-RHS-column joints. This work finally proposes the most adequate equations that were found for the stiffness and strength characterization of the component 'side walls of RHS in tension/compression' to be applied in a further unified global proposal for the application of the component method to RHS.
Behavior of RC beam-column joint is very complex as the composite material behaves differently in elastic and inelastic range. The approaches generally used for predicting joint shear strength are either based on theoretical, strut-and-tie or empirical methods. These approaches are incapable of predicting the accurate response of the joint for entire range of loading. In the present study a new generalized RC beam-column joint shear strength model based on hybrid approach i.e. combined strut-and-tie and empirical approach has been proposed. The contribution of governing parameters affecting the joint shear strength under compression has been derived from compressive strut approach whereas; the governing parameters active under tension has been extracted from empirical approach. The proposed model is applicable for various conditions such as, joints reinforced either with or without shear reinforcement, joints with wide beam or wide column, joints with transverse beams and slab, joints reinforced with X-bars, different anchorage of beam bar, and column subjected to various axial loading conditions. The joint shear strength prediction of the proposed model has been compared with 435 experimental results and with eleven popular models from literature. In comparison to other eleven models the prediction of the proposed model is found closest to the experimental results. Moreover, from statistical analysis of the results, the proposed model has the least coefficient of variation. The proposed model is simple in application and can be effectively used by designers.

Early detection of damage bonding state such as insufficient bonding strength and interface partial contact defect for the explosive clad pipe is crucial in order to avoid sudden failure and even catastrophic accidents. A generalized and efficient model of the explosive clad pipe can reveal the relationship between bonding state and vibration characteristics, and provide foundations and priory knowledge for bonding state detection by signal processing technique. In this paper, the slender explosive clad pipe is regarded as two parallel elastic beams continuously joined by an elastic layer, and the elastic layer is capable to describe the non-uniform bonding state. By taking the characteristic beam modal functions as the admissible functions, the Rayleigh-Ritz method is employed to derive the dynamic model which enables one to consider inhomogeneous system and any boundary conditions. Then, the proposed model is validated by both numerical results and experiment. Parametric studies are carried out to investigate the effects of bonding strength and the length of partial contact defect on the natural frequency and forced response of the explosive clad pipe. A potential method for identifying the bonding quality of the explosive clad pipe is also discussed in this paper.

This article develops a nonclassical model to analyze bending response of squared perforated microbeams considering the coupled effect of microstructure and surface stress under different loading and boundary conditions, those are not be studied before. The corresponding material and geometrical characteristics of regularly squared perforated beams relative to fully filled beam are obtained analytically. The modified couple stress and the modified Gurtin-Murdoch surface elasticity models are adopted to incorporate the microstructure as well as the surface energy effects. The differential equations of equilibrium including the Poisson's effect are derived based on minimum potential energy. Exact closed form solution is obtained for bending behavior of the proposed model considering the classical and nonclassical boundary conditions for both uniformly distributed and concentrated loads. The proposed model is verified with results available in the literature. Influences of the microstructure length scale parameter, surface energy, beam thickness, boundary and loading conditions on the bending behavior of perforated microbeams are investigated. It is observed that microstructure and surface parameters are vital in investigation of the bending behavior of perforated microbeams. The obtained results are supportive for the design, analysis and manufacturing of perforated nanobeams that commonly used in nanoactuators, nanoswitches, MEMS and NEMS systems.
The object of this paper is to investigate the free vibration behavior under the effect of carbon nanotube distribution in functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) by using higher-order shear deformation theories. In this work, we present a novel distribution method for carbon nanotubes in the polymer matrix by using a new exponential power law distribution of carbon nanotube volume fraction. It is assumed that the SWCNTs are aligned along the beam axial direction and the distribution of the SWCNTs may vary through the thickness of the beam with different patterns of reinforcement. The rule of mixtures is used in order to obtain material properties of the CNTRC beams. Hamilton's principle is used in deriving the equations of motion. The validity of the free Vibration results is examined by comparing them with those of the known data in the literature. The results that obtained indicate that the carbon nanotube volume fraction distribution play a very important role on the free vibrations characteristics of the CNTRC beam.

This article aims to investigate the size dependent bending behavior of perforated nanobeams incorporating the nonlocal and the microstructure effects based on the nonlocal strain gradient elasticity theory (NSGET). Shear deformation effect due to cutout process is studied by using Timoshenko beams theory. Closed formulas for the equivalent geometrical characteristics of regularly squared cutout shape are derived. The governing equations of motion considering the nonlocal and microstructure effects are derived in comprehensive procedure and nonclassical boundary conditions are presented. Analytical solution for the governing equations of motion is derived. The derived non-classical analytical solutions are verified by comparing the obtained results with the available results in the literature and good agreement is observed. Numerical results are obtained and discussed. Parametric studies are conducted to explore effects of perforation characteristics, the nonclassical material parameters, beam slenderness ratio as well as the boundary and loading conditions on the non-classical transverse bending behavior of cutout nanobeams. Results obtained are supportive for the design, analysis and manufacturing of such nanosized structural system.

In some buildings, the lateral structural response of steel framed buildings depends on the shear walls and it is very important to study the behavior of these elements under near-field seismic loads. The link beam in the opening of the shear wall between two wall plates is investigated numerically in terms of behavior and effects on frames. Based on the length of the beam and its bending and shear behavior, three types of models are constructed and analyzed, and the behavior of the frames is also compared. The results show that by reducing the length of the link beam, the base shear forces reduce about 20%. The changes in the length of the link beam have different effects on the degree of coupling. Increasing the length of the link beam increases the base shear about 15%. Also, it has both, a positive and a negative effect on the degree of coupling. The increasing strength of the coupling steel shear wall is linearly related to the yield stress of the beam materials, length, and flexural stiffness of the beam. The use of a shorter link beam will increase the additional strength and consequently improving the behavior of the coupling steel shear wall by reducing the stresses in this element. The link beam with large moment of inertia will also increase about 25% the additional strength and as a result the coefficient of behavior of the shear wall.
This study investigates the effect of bolt preloading on the rotational stiffness of stainless steel end-plate connections. An experimental programme incorporating 11 full-scale joint specimens are carried out comparing the behaviours of fully pre-tensioned (PT) and snug-tightened (ST) flush/extended end-plate connections, made of austenitic or lean duplex stainless steels. It is observed from the tests that the presence of bolt preloading leads to a significant increase in the rotational stiffness. A parallel finite element analysis (FEA) validated against the test results demonstrates that the geometric imperfection of end-plate has a strong influence on the moment-rotation response of preloaded end-plate connections, which is crucial to explain the observed "two-stage" behaviour of these connections. Based on the data obtained from the tests and FE parametric study, the performance of the Eurocode 3 predictive model is evaluated, which exhibits a significant deviation in predicting the rotational stiffness of stainless steel end-plate connections. A modified bi-linear model, which incorporates three key properties, is therefore proposed to enable a better prediction. Finally, the effect of bolt preloading is demonstrated at the system (structure) level considering the serviceability of semi-continuous stainless steel beams with end-plate connections.

This article investigates the energy harvesting characteristics of a magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) cantilever beam reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNT) under transverse vibration. To this end, the well-known lumped parameter model is used to represent the coupled multiphysics problem mathematically. The proposed system consists of the MEE-CNT layer on top and an inactive substrate layer at the bottom. The substrate is considered to be made of either an isotropic or composite material. Basic laws such as Gauss's Law, Newton's Law and Faraday's Law are used to arrive at the governing equations. Surface electrodes across the beam are used to harvest the electric potential produced, together with a wound coil, for the generated magnetic potential. The influence of various distributions of the CNT and its volume fraction, substrate material, length-to-thickness ratio, and thickness ratio of substrate to MEE layer on the energy harvesting behaviour is thoroughly discussed. Further, the effect of external resistances and changes in substrate material on the response is analysed and reported. The article aims to explore smart material-based energy harvesting systems, focusing on their behaviour when reinforced with carbon nanotubes. The results of this study may lead to an improved understanding of the design and analysis of CNT-based smart structures.
