This study was performed to evaluate the effect of resin and filler type on the fracture toughness of light-activated composites. Experimental composites were prepared using urethane tetramethacrylate(UTMA) and bisphenol glycidylmethacrylate(Bis-GMA) monomers and five different types of silica fillers. Fracture toughness was measured by a single edge V-notched beam(SEVNB) method, which was discussed from ASTM E399-78. Rectangular bars of $2.5{\times}5{\times}26mm$ were prepared with experimental composites and a notch about 2.25mm deep was carved at the center of the long axis of the specimen using a dental diamond disk driven by a dental micro engine. The flexural test was carried out at a crosshead speed of 0.05mm/min and fracture surfaces were observed under scanning electron microscope. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. The fracture toughness values of UTMA-based composites were relatively higher than those of Bis-GMA-based composites. 2. The highest fracture toughness value was observed in the UTMA-based composite containing the $1.5{\mu}m$-spherical fillers. 3 Aging in the distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 10 days showed the increase of fracture toughness, which was severer in the Bis-GMA-based composites than those of UTMA-based composites. 4. The AE amplitude occurring during the fracture toughness tests was the highest at the point of macroscopic fracture.
This study was focused on the measurement of thermal expansion coefficients for GRP pipe through strain gage circuits. First of all, thermal expansion coefficients of aluminum beam were measured to examine the validity of the suggested method by using various types of strain gage circuits. Thermal expansion coefficients of GRP pipes along axial and hoop directions were measured to investigate the effect of the location of strain gages, number of repeated measurements, and strain gage types with different thermal expansion coefficients on the thermal strains and the repeatability of measured results. According to the results, thermal expansion coefficients of GRP pipes along hoop direction were lower than those along axial direction due to the constraint effect of reinforced glass fibers on thermal strains along hoop direction. As measurements were repeated, thermal expansion coefficients of GRP pipes were slightly increased, but the degree of increase became smaller. Finally, the same thermal expansion coefficients were obtained irrespective of different types of strain gages with different thermal expansion coefficients if thermal strains of strain gages were compensated by using reference compensation specimen.

This paper presents out-of-plane shear strength models for composite wall with steel plates based on limit theorem in the framework of the plasticity theory. The formulas proposed by JEAG 4618 need to be reconsidered with a couple of limitations; ignoring the effect of bond stress generated by studs in the process of calculating arch action, illogically discriminating between concrete shear cracking strength and arch strength by algebraic relation in short shear span ratio(0-2.0). In most cases, reinforcement ratio is not sufficient to yield, as a result, arch strength is determined by accounting equilibrium including both bond strength and concrete compressive strength. We conducted experimental research assuming that SC wall is a continuous beam under the simplified loading patterns, changing main valuables involving the number of studs, stirrups. The results show good agreements with the formula and we quoted the test results of JEAG.
Previous theoretical equations for the shear capacity of steel beam to concrete filled steel tube (CFT) column connections vary in the assumptions for the shear deformation mechanisms and adopt different equations for calculating shear strength of each component (steel tube webs, steel tube flanges, diaphragms, and concrete etc.); thus result in different equations for calculating shear strength of the joint. Besides, shear force-deformation relations of the joint, needed for estimating building drift, are not well developed at the present. This paper compares previously proposed equations for joint shear capacity, discusses the shear deformation mechanism of the joint, and suggests recommendations for obtaining more accurate predictions. Finite element analyses of internal diaphragm connections to CFT columns were carried out in ABAQUS. ABAQUS results and theoretical estimations of the shear capacities were then used to calibrate rotational springs in joint elements in OpenSEES simulating the shear deformation behavior of the joint. The ABAQUS and OpenSEES results were validated with experimental results available. Results show that: (1) shear deformation of the steel tube dominates the deformation of the joint; while the thickness of the diaphragms has a negligible effect; (2) in OpenSEES simulation, the joint behavior is highly dependent on the yielding strength given to the rotational spring; and (3) axial force ratio has a significant effect on the joint deformation of the specimen analyzed. Finally, modified joint shear force-deformation relations are proposed based on previous theory.
Fire incident in buildings is common, so the fire safety design of the framed structure is imperative, especially for the unprotected or partly protected bare steel frames. However, software for structural fire analysis is not widely available. As a result, the performance-based structural fire design is urged on the basis of using user-friendly and conventional nonlinear computer analysis programs so that engineers do not need to acquire new structural analysis software for structural fire analysis and design. The tool is desired to have the capacity of simulating the different fire scenarios and associated detrimental effects efficiently, which includes second-order P-D and P-d effects and material yielding. Also the nonlinear behaviour of large-scale structure becomes complicated when under fire, and thus its simulation relies on an efficient and effective numerical analysis to cope with intricate nonlinear effects due to fire. To this end, the present fire study utilizes a second-order elastic/plastic analysis software NIDA to predict structural behaviour of bare steel framed structures at elevated temperatures. This fire study considers thermal expansion and material degradation due to heating. Degradation of material strength with increasing temperature is included by a set of temperature-stress-strain curves according to BS5950 Part 8 mainly, which implicitly allows for creep deformation. This finite element stiffness formulation of beam-column elements is derived from the fifth-order PEP element which facilitates the computer modeling by one member per element. The Newton-Raphson method is used in the nonlinear solution procedure in order to trace the nonlinear equilibrium path at specified elevated temperatures. Several numerical and experimental verifications of framed structures are presented and compared against solutions in literature. The proposed method permits engineers to adopt the performance-based structural fire analysis and design using typical second-order nonlinear structural analysis software.
This paper presents experimental and analytical results of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) confined steel tubular columns under transverse impact loads. Influences of applied impact energy, thickness of FRP jacket and impact position were discussed in detail, and then the impact responses of FRP confined steel tubes were compared with bare steel tubes. The test results revealed that the FRP jacket contributes to prevent outward buckling deformation of steel at the clamped end and inward buckling of steel at the impact position. For the given applied impact energy, specimens wrapped with one layer and three layers of FRP have the lower peak impact loads than those of the bare steel tubes, whereas specimens wrapped with five layers of FRP exhibit the higher peak impact loads. All the FRP confined steel tubular specimens displayed a longer duration time than the bare steel tubes under the same magnitude of impact energy, and the specimen wrapped with one layer of FRP had the longest duration time. In addition, increasing the applied impact energy leads to the increase of peak impact load and duration time, whereas increasing the distance of impact position from the clamped end results in the decrease of peak impact load and the increase of duration time. The dynamic analysis software Abaqus Explicit was used to simulate the mechanical behavior of FRP confined steel tubular columns, and the numerical results agreed well with the test data. Analytical solution for lateral displacement of an equivalent cantilever beam model subjected to impact load was derived out. Comparison of analytical and experimental results shows that the maximum displacement can be precisely predicted by the present theoretical model.
The design criteria and the corresponding performance levels characterize the response of extended stiffened end-plate beam-to-column joints. In order to guarantee a ductile behavior, hierarchy criteria should be adopted to enforce the plastic deformations in the ductile components of the joint. However, the effectiveness of thesecriteria can be impaired if the actual resistance of the end-plate material largely differs from the design value due to the potential activation of brittle failure modes of the bolt rows (e.g., occurrence of failure mode 3 in the place of mode 1 per bolt row). Also the number and the position of bolt rows directly affect the joint response. The presence of a bolt row in the center of the connection does not improve the strength of the joint under both gravity, wind and seismic loading, but it can modify the damage pattern of ductile connections, reducing the gap opening between the end-plate and the column face. On the other hand, the presence of a central bolt row can influence the capacity of the joint to resist the catenary actions developing under a column loss scenario, thus improving the joint robustness. Aiming at investigating the influence of these features on both the cyclic behavior and the response under column loss, a wide range of finite element analyses (FEAs) were performed and the main results are described and discussed in this paper.

In order to increase endurance flight efficiency of long endurance electric powered UAV with solar cell, the light weight airframe design techniques are important. In this paper, the design of the main wing of electric powered UAV manufactured using Mylar film and fiber reinforced composite was conducted in order to achieve weight reduction and structural integrity of the structure. The shape of spar and size were determined using beam theory analysis. The finite element analysis of the wing was performed under various load condition derived from flight environment of EAV-2H. Finally, the static strength test of the main wing was conducted to verify structural integrity. It was found that the developed main wing weigh less than 42% than the previous EAV-2 and the main wing passed static strength test under ultimate load.

Cellular and castellated steel beams are used to obtain higher stiffness and bending capacity using the same weight of steel. In addition, the beam openings may be used as a pass for different mechanical fixtures such as ducts and pipes. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of different parameters on both elastic and inelastic critical buckling stresses of steel web plates with openings. These parameters are plate aspect ratio; opening shape (circular or rectangular); end distance to the first opening; opening spacing; opening size; plate slenderness ratio; steel grade; and initial web imperfection. The web/flange interaction has been simplified by web edge restraints representing simply supported boundary conditions. A numerical parametric study has been performed through linear and nonlinear finite element (FE) models, where the FE results have been verified against both experimental and numerical results in the literature. The web plates are subject to in-plane linearly varying compression with different loading patterns, ranging from uniform compression to pure bending. A buckling stress modification factor (${\beta}$-factor) has been introduced as a ratio of buckling stress of web plate with openings to buckling stress of the corresponding solid web plate. The variation of ${\beta}$-factor against the aforementioned parameters has been reported. Furthermore, the critical plate slenderness ratio separating elastic buckling and yielding has been identified and discussed for two steel grades of DIN-17100, namely: ST-37/2 and ST-52/3. The FE results revealed that the minimum ${\beta}$-factor is 0.9 for web plates under uniform compression and 0.7 for those under both compression and tension.

Advanced composite structures are too difficult for such design engineers for construction and some simple but accurate enough methods are necessary. The simply supported laminated plates are analyzed by the specially orthotropic laminates theory. This method, however, may be too difficult for some practising engineers. In this paper, the result of analysis for such plate by means of the beam theory with unit width is reported. The plate aspect ratio considered is from 1 : 1 to 1 : 5. Most of the bridge and building slabs on girders have large aspect ratios. For such cases further simplification is possible by neglecting the effect of the longitudinal moment terms($M_x$) on the relevant partial differential equations of equilibrium. In this paper. the influence of the aspect ratio on the natural frequency of the specially orthotropic laminated plates is studied and it is concluded that the method used is sufficiently accurate for engineering purposes. The result of this paper can be used for simply supported laminated plates analysis.
