Region Segmentation using Discrete Morse Theory - Application to the Mammography (이산 모스 이론을 이용한 영역 분할 - 맘모그래피에의 응용)

  • In this paper we propose how to detect circular objects in the gray scale image and segment them using the discrete Morse theory, which makes it possible to analyze the topology of a digital image, when it is transformed into the data structure of some combinatorial complex. It is possible to get meaningful information about how many connected components and topologically circular shapes are in the image by computing the persistent homology of the filtration using the Morse complex. We obtain a Morse complex by modeling an image as a cubical cellular complex. Each cell in the Morse complex is the critical point at which the topological structure changes in the filtration consisting of the level sets of the image. In this paper, we implement the proposed algorithm of segmenting the circularly shaped objects with a long persistence of homology as well as computing persistent homology along the filtration of the input image and displaying in the form of a persistence diagram.

NMR Study on the Preferential Binding of the Zα Domain of Human ADAR1 to CG-repeat DNA Duplex

  • The Z-DNA domain of human ADAR1 ($Z{\alpha}_{ADAR1}$) produces B-Z junction DNA through preferential binding to the CG-repeat segment and destabilizing the neighboring AT-rich region. However, this study could not answer the question of how many base-pairs in AT-rich region are destabilized by binding of $Z{\alpha}_{ADAR1}$. Thus, we have performed NMR experiments of $Z{\alpha}_{ADAR1}$ to the longer DNA duplex containing an 8-base-paired (8-bp) CG-repeat segment and a 12-bp AT-rich region. This study revealed that $Z{\alpha}_{ADAR1}$ preferentially binds to the CG-repeat segment rather than AT-rich region in a long DNA and then destabilizes at least 6 base-pairs in the neighboring AT-rich region for efficient B-Z transition of the CG-repeat segment.

  • This paper describes a development of efficient stress ECG signal analysis algorithm. The algorithm consists of wavelet adaptive filter(WAF), QRS detector and ST segment detector. The WAF consists of a wavelet transform and an adaptive filter. The wavelet transform decomposed the ECG signal into seven levels using wavelet function for each high frequency bank and low frequency bank. The adaptive filter used the signal of the seventh lowest frequency band among the wavelet transformed signals as primary input. For detection of QRS complex, we made summed signals that are composed of high frequency bands including frequency component of QRS complex and applied the adaptive threshold method changing the amplitude of threshold according to RR interval. For evaluation of the performance of the WAF, we used two baseline wandering elimination filters including a standard filter and a general adaptive filter. WAF showed a better performance than compared filters in the noise elimination characteristics and signal distortion. For evaluation of WAF showed a better performance than compared filters in the noise elimination characteristics and signal distortion. For evaluation of results of QRS complex detection, we compared our algorithm with existing algorithms using MIT/BIH database. Our algorithm using summed signals showed the accuracy of 99.67% and the higher performance of QRS detection than existing algorithms. Also, we used European ST-T database and patient data to evaluate measurement of the ST segment and could measure the ST segment adaptively according to change of heart rate.

Extended Snake Algorithm Using Color Variance Energy (컬러 분산 에너지를 이용한 확장 스네이크 알고리즘)

  • In this paper, an extended snake algorithm using color variance energy is proposed for segmenting an interest object in color image. General snake algorithm makes use of energy in image to segment images into a interesting area and background. There are many kinds of energy that can be used by the snake algorithm. The efficiency of the snake algorithm is depend on what kind of energy is used. A general snake algorithm based on active contour model uses the intensity value as an image energy that can be implemented and analyzed easily. But it is sensitive to noises because the image gradient uses a differential operator to get its image energy. And it is difficult for the general snake algorithm to be applied on the complex image background. Therefore, the proposed snake algorithm efficiently segment an interest object on the color image by adding a color variance of the segmented area to the image energy. This paper executed various experiments to segment an interest object on color images with simple or complex background for verifying the performance of the proposed extended snake algorithm. It shows improved accuracy performance about 12.42 %.

Treatment for Giant Fusiform Aneurysm Located in the Cavernous Segment of the Internal Carotid Artery Using the Pipeline Embolization Device

  • The pipeline embolization device (PED) is a new endovascular device for treatment of complex, fusiform and wide-neck intracranial aneurysms. The main mechanism of this stent is to divert the flow in the parent artery with reduction of inflow in the aneurysm leading to thrombosis. We treated a 40-year-old woman who had left facial pain and orbit discomfort. Angiography showed a giant fusiform aneurysm located in the cavernous segment of the left internal carotid artery. A PED was successfully deployed across the aneurysm. The procedure and post-procedural course were uneventful. After 3 months, angiography showed complete obliteration of the aneurysm with good patency of the branching vessels originating from the deployed segment. The patient's symptoms improved completely without complications.

  • Computer Assisted Simulation Surgery (CASS) is a reliable method that permits oral and maxillofacial surgeons to visualize the position of the maxilla and the mandible as observed in the patient. The purpose of this report was to introduce a newly developed strategy for proximal segment management according to Balanced Orthognathic Surgery (BOS) protocol which is a type of CASS, and to establish the clinical feasibility of the BOS protocol in the treatment of complex maxillo-facial deformities. The BOS protocol consists of the following 4 phases: 1) Planning and simulation phase, 2) Modeling phase, 3) Surgical phase, and 4) Evaluation phase. The surgical interventions in 80 consecutive patients were planned and executed by the BOS protocol. The BOS protocol ensures accuracy during surgery, thereby facilitating the completion of procedures without any complications. The BOS protocol may be a complete solution that enables an orthognatic surgeon to perform accurate surgery based on a surgical plan, making real outcomes as close to pre-planned outcomes as possible.

New Approach to Investigate the Dynamic Relaxaton Process of Complex Peak in Mechanical and dielectric Characteristics of Anelastic Solids

  • Complex dynamic relaxation processes of mechanical as well as dielectric character in polymeric anelastic solids are closely related through the movement of molecular chain segment in morphological structure, and the morphology can easily be modified by the treatments such as mechanical drawing or irradiation, those of which result, in turn, the complicated change on the appearance of the observed complex relaxation peak. In order to extract any meaningful understanding from the modified appearance of the peak, the relaxation peak must be resolved into the sum of the dynamic single relaxation peaks, each of which can be characterized respectively by three factors such as activation energy, magnitude of peak height and peak point temperature on the temperature dependent characteristics.

Study on the Structure of DNA Containing a Thymine Dimer and $T_4$ Endonuclense V * DNA Complex (Thymine Dimer를 포함한 DNA와 $T_4$ Endonuclease V * DNA 복합체의 구조에 관한 연구)

  • In order to obtain insight into the repair mechanism of DNA containing thymine photo-dimer, the conformation of the duplex d(GCGGTTGGCG).d(CGCCAACCGC) with a thymine dimer incorporated has been studied by proton NMR. NOE data show that, although the local environment around the thymine dimer is altered, the gross structural changes are relatively small. T$_4$endonuclease V exhibited a conformational change on complex formation with DNA. This conformational change occurred around histidine 16 which was close to tyrosine 129 located in the aromatic segment (WYKYY) near the C-terminus. It is likely that the interaction between T$_4$endonuclease V and DNA is strong since the complex was not dissociated up to 1.6 M NaCl.

Text Segmentation from Images with Various Light Conditions Based on Gaussian Mixture Model

  • Standard Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) is a well-known method for image segmentation. However, one of its problems is that we consider the pixel as independent to each other, which can cause the segmentation results sensitive to noise. It explains why some of existing algorithms still cannot segment texts from the background clearly. Therefore, we present a new method in which we incorporate the spatial relationship between a pixel and its neighbors inside $3{\times}3$ windows to segment the text. Our approach works well with images containing texts, which has different sizes, shapes or colors in case of light changes or complex background. Experimental results demonstrate the robustness, accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed model in image segmentation compared to other methods.

Could A1 Aplasia or Hypoplasia Affect the Morphology and Rupture Risk of Anterior Communicating Artery Aneurysm?

  • Objective : Anterior communicating artery (Acom) aneurysm is one of the most common intracranial aneurysms, constituting approximately 30-35% of all aneurysm formation in the brain. Anatomically, the H-complex (the anatomic morphology of both A1 to A2 segments) is thought to affects the nature of the Acom aneurysm due to its close relationship with the hemodynamics of the vessel. Therefore, we investigated the relative risk factors of aneurysmal rupture, especially focusing on H-complex morphology of the Acom. Methods : From January 2016 to December 2020, a total of 209 patients who underwent surgery, including clipping and coiling for Acom aneurysm in our institution were reviewed. There were 102 cases of ruptured aneurysm and 107 cases of unruptured aneurysm. The baseline morphology of aneurysms was investigated and the relationship between the H-complex and the clinical characteristics of patients with Acom aneurysms was assessed. Results : Of the 209 patients, 109 patients (52.1%) had symmetrical A1, 79 patients (37.8%) had unilateral hypoplastic A1, and 21 patients (10.0%) had aplastic A1. The hypoplastic A1 group and the aplastic A1 group were grouped together as unilateral dominancy of A1, and were compared with the symmetrical A1 group. There was no significant difference in demographic characteristics and radiological findings of Acom aneurysms between two groups. However, when dichotomizing the patients into ruptured cases and unruptured cases, unilateral dominance of the A1 segment was associated with aneurysmal rupture with statistical significance (p=0.011). Conclusion : These results suggest that the unilateral dominance of the A1 segment does not have a significant effect on the morphology of Acom aneurysms, but contributes to aneurysmal rupture. Thus, we can better understand the effects of hemodynamics on Acom aneurysm.
