Especially in Northern Vietnam, both the demand and supply of handling services for containerized cargoes have increased at a considerable rates. Accompany with such movement, the competition among container terminals in the area becomes fiercer. In this paper, Hierarchical Cluster Analysis is employed to classify all 11 container terminals in Northern Vietnam by collecting data concerning terminal competitiveness. After the classification, each group will be discussed in order to reveal more details about their competitive characteristics. The paper consists of five sections. Section 1 is the general introduction. Section 2 provides a general literature review about competitiveness and factors to evaluate competitiveness. Section 3 explains variables and methodology applied to do the analysis. Section 4 presents the results with linkage to the current condition. Section 5 summarizes the analysis results. It is shown that container terminals in Northern Vietnam should not only pay attention to their service qualities but also have to find out an appropriate mechanism to avoid unhealthy competition. The paper is expected to contribute a background for further researches in container terminals' competition in the region as well as hints for operators in planning and making decisions.

  • In this paper, we analyse the comparative competitiveness of the 10 major logistic hub cities in China. First, using the input distance function, we calculated the technical efficiencies and the opportunity costs of the transport infra structure investments. Then, based on not only these supply side factors but also demand side, the overall comparative competitiveness by cities are analyzed. Our main findings are as follows: early developed, larger cities such as Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen are technically efficient but their opportunity costs of the additional transport investments are higher than the other cities. We also found that overall competitiveness of these larger and leading logistic hub cities are dominant over the small and newly developed logistic cities.

  • This study is to provide a comprehensive overview of the changing vegetable sector of Chinese agriculture and to analyse the competitiveness of Chinese vegetable production. China now produces more than 60% of the world's vegetable supply and that 150 million people are engaged in vegetable production, processing and marketing since the reform of vegetable industry structure started in the late 1980s. As a labour abundant industry, China also features more comparative advantages in the vegetable trade. Although China's vegetable exports still accounts for only 1% of total production, the 5 million tons of export in 2003 makes China one of the largest vegetable players in the international markets. When estimating competitiveness of China's vegetable industry, China's producers' prices for vegetables are founded to be only from 10%~40% of what they are in Korea, while most of China's vegetables have also strong competitiveness in quality. As China joined the WTO in 2001 and expects to increase market share in vegetable trade, the development strategy for Korea's vegetable industry are suggested as follows; 1) focusing on the technology for the growth of vegetable productivity, 2) developing the higher value added vegetable industry through processing, 3) expanding the exported area and leading vegetable varieties.

  • Logistics companies distinguish between medium-sized business and small business according to the size of enterprises. Of course, conglomerates are called global corporations. In this study, mid-sized companies over a certain size or more and those below are classified and decide the priorities among important factors to secure competitiveness in logistics companies are determined through AHP technique. Mid-sized companies are companies that can provide more than two logistics services. For example, they provide warehousing and transportation services in the same time. small companies are companies that can mostly provide one functional service. Warehousing, transportation, manpower, and information are listed as factors in this study. As a result of the study, medium-sized companies emphasized on the importance of transportation. When it comes to small companies, warehousing was emphasized as an important factor. Due to the simultaneous and contemporary service of warehousing and transportation in small-sized company, the reliable image of the company will be underestimated in case of delays in transportation. Competitiveness will also be weakened. Global corporations or conglomerates will start to consider relocating warehousing areas to others except for the central storage hub. They won't plan to invest directly, either. Therefore, it will be possible to secure competitiveness by providing the function of warehousing and to signed easily partnership.

  • The purpose of this study is to secure reasonable transportation infrastructure stock for enhancing national competitiveness in Korea. National competitiveness may be defined as a country's overall capacity to create the most effective social structure, institutions and policies that allow her company within the national boundary to be more competitive in the world market. If Korea's transportation infrastructure stock is not sufficient and a connection among transportation facilities is not efficient, we should pay the social and economic cost. As a result, we worry that national competitiveness may drop. Some methods to maintain or to increase the national investment for transportation infrastructure that are suggested from this study are as follows: Firstly, we need to operate the Spcial Account for Traffic Facilities. Secondly, the investment should be focused on the facilities and districts in needs. Thirdly, PFI (private finance initiative) policy should be aimed at investing for the highly economic-valued projects.

  • This study analyzes trade competitiveness by classifying the classification by item among Korea and the 10 ASEAN member countries into high level and medium-high level technology industry groups, medium level, medium-low level, and low-level technology industry groups. Before analyzing each of the 10 member states, I investigate the trade competitiveness between Korea and ASEAN, and analyze the trade competitiveness of Korea, especially among the 10 member countries, with Korea having a competitive industrial force. The study results revealed that trade with Vietnam was actively promoted, with Korea-Vietnam trade volume also growing far above that of other member states. And trade with Korea was brisk in the order of Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. The analysis of the trade structure of the 10 ASEAN member states, confirmed that imports were also being made while exporting items in the high- and medium-level technology industry groups. The possibility of entering the Korean market was quite high, given that Korea imported high- and medium- and high-tech industrial forces while exporting low-tech industrial forces.
