  • Purpose: This study examined characteristics and patterns of interorganizational networks for smoking prevention and cessation in Korea. Methods: We surveyed two community health centers, ninety-five hospitals or clinics, ninety- two pharmacies, and sixty-five health welfare organizations in two districts of Seoul in 2020. Data on the organizations' characteristics of smoking cessation and interorganizational activities for information sharing, client referral, and program collaboration were collected and analyzed using network statistics and blockmodeling. Results: Network size was in the order of information sharing, client referral, and program collaboration networks. Network patterns for interorganizational activities on information sharing, client referral, and program collaboration among four organizations were similar between the two districts. Community health centers provided information and received clients from a majority of the organizations. Their interactions were not unidirectional but mutual with other organizations. Pharmacies were involved in information sharing with health welfare organizations and client referrals to hospitals or clinics. Health welfare organizations were primarily connected with the community health centers for client referrals and program collaboration. Conclusion: A community health center is the lead agency in interorganizational activities for smoking prevention and cessation. However, hospitals or clinics, pharmacies, and health welfare organizations also participate in interorganizational networks for smoking prevention and cessation with diverse roles. This study would be evidence for developing future interorganizational networks for smoking prevention and cessation.

  • Objectives: The aim of the present study is to elucidate the relationship of community capacity to health in a metropolitan area in Korea. To do so, a multi-level model to verify the contextual effects of community capacity is presented. Methods: The study materials are the "The 4th Seoul Citizens Health Indicators Surveys" on 404 dong in Seoul. The community capacity indicators were developed in two strata: individual-level indicators with community identity domain; and community-level indicators with participation in community organizations, number of non-profit organizations, degree of organizing of community-based organizations, and volunteer activities. Results: Higher unhealthy probability occurs among those with lower community capacity at the community level, lower individual income, and lower community satisfaction at the individual level. It contributed to explaining self-rated health status and showed that there were contextual effects of the community going beyond the compositional effects of the individual. Conclusions: In the process of building community capacity, a community autonomously finds pending issues and solves related problems, and in so doing, raises the social quality and establishes the conditions for health promotion. Thus, the significance of neighborhood needs to be discovered and created in a new way through the development of community capacity.

  • The purpose of this study is to conduct an analysis of rural village's community status and consciousness through a questionnaire survey of community leaders and members. Nine types of rural village communities were selected in Korea through a pre-survey of amenity resources data from the Rural Development Administration. Survey items that could determine characteristics of rural village communities were derived from a literature survey of rural village community systems. A questionnaire survey was conducted for 12 Eup-Myeon in Yesan Gun and responses were gathered from 66 community leaders and 1,222 community members. The results derived from the data collected from the community leaders show that 50% percent of rural village communities have been operating for over 25 years, and that community works such as group purchases are carried out based on emotional sympathies between residents. The results derived from the data collected from community members show that on average, community activities are carried out at places that are between 30 and 60 minutes away. Most members are satisfied with regard to the status of their rural village community. A correlation analysis showed that the rural village community satisfaction depended on travel time, community fee, and activity time.

  • We compared the structure of fish community and condition of major fish species in Lake Chungpyung and Lake Paldang, which are relatively shallow, meso-eutrophic, cascading dam reservoirs on the North Han River. Two lakes have wide littoral zone in the lakeside providing similarly good habitat for fishes, whereas fishery and water recreational activities such as motorboating, water skiing are allowed in Lake Chungpyung but are prohibited in Lake Paldang. The average lengths of large size fishes in Lake Chungpyung are shorter than those of same species in Lake Paldang, resulting in the slight distortion of generation distribution of those species in Lake Chungpyung, possibly owing to the active fishery such as fixed shore net fishing, gill net fishing and angling. Meanwhile the condition of fishes represented by the length-weight relationship of fish species did not show the significant differences between two lakes and showed normal condition. To evaluate the impact of physical disturbance such as loud noise and turbulent wave from water recreational activities to fishes precisely, further studies including physiological responses to stress an spawing activity should be needed.

  • To evaluate the antioxidative effect of maengjong-juk (Phyllostachys pubescens) extract coated rice in vivo system, maengjong-juk extract coated rice diets were fed to C57BL/6 mice for 16 weeks. Plasma total antioxidative capacity, hepatic lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation, activities of antioxidative enzymes and total glutathione content were measured. Plasma total antioxidative capacity was elevated significantly in maengjong-juk extract diets supplemented group in a dose dependant manner. Hepatic TBARS contents were significantly decreased in maengjong-juk extract diets supplemented group compared to high cholesterol group. Maengjong-juk extract coated rice diets suppressed the protein oxidation significantly in liver. Activities of hepatic antioxidative enzymes such as total SOD, CuㆍZn-SOD, Mn-SOD, GSH-Px and catalase activities of maengjong-juk extract coated rice diets were significantly higher than those of high cholesterol diet. Total hepatic glutathione content was significantly increased by maengjong-juk extract coated rice diets administration. According to this study, numerous antioxidative materials and phytochemicals containing in maengjong-juk extracts appear to protect antioxidative systems in C57BL/6 mice fed bamboo extract coated rice diet. • The purpose of this research was to develop and evaluate a preventive mental health program for the depression among the elderly in community. Based on the review of literature, intervention program for preventing depression among the elderly was developed. In particular, the program focuses on enhancing the sense of control which is from social cognitive theory. The preventive mental health program consists of two parts: Tan-Hak and Social intervention program. Tan-Hak was oriented to cognitive change and activities, while social intervention program dealt with some social skills for relationship, stress management, motivation of social activities (volunteer activities), positive future designing, etc. For the evaluation of this program, we employed depression scale and medical measurement such as hormone test before and after the program, and in-depth interview of subjects. Overall, this program was successful in some points. First, through the pre and post test, this program has positive effect on strengthening the sense of control, and consequently, lowering depression level. Secondly, 18 people started this program called "smile class" at first time, and none of them turned out until the end of the program. This implies that the program was interesting to the elderly.

  • Context: Genuine community participation does not denote taking part in an action planned by health care professionals in a medical or top-down approach. Further, community participation and health education on breast cancer prevention are not similar to other activities incorporated in primary health care services in Iran. Objective: To propose a model that provides a methodological tool to increase women's participation in the decision making process towards breast cancer prevention. To address this, an evaluation framework was developed that includes a typology of community participation approaches (models) in health, as well as five levels of participation in health programs proposed by Rifkin (1985&1991). Method: This model explains the community participation approaches in breast cancer prevention in Iran. In a 'medical approach', participation occurs in the form of women's adherence to mammography recommendations. As a 'health services approach', women get the benefits of a health project or participate in the available program activities related to breast cancer prevention. The model provides the five levels of participation in health programs along with the 'health services approach' and explains how to implement those levels for women's participation in available breast cancer prevention programs at the local level. Conclusion: It is hoped that a focus on the 'medical approach' (top-down) and the 'health services approach' (top-down) will bring sustainable changes in breast cancer prevention and will consequently produce the 'community development approach' (bottom-up). This could be achieved using a comprehensive approach to breast cancer prevention by combining the individual and community strategies in designing an intervention program for breast cancer prevention.
