  • One of the problems with the base station equipment is that there is a large difference between the replacement time of the hardware equipment such as the base station equipment and the radio access equipment, and the evolution period of the communication standard. Therefore, the base station communication platform must be flexible enough to handle the evolving communication standards after purchase. Recent research on reconfigurable communications platforms has focused on the efficient architecture of the communications platform to meet these requirements through software downloads while still using existing hardware. This paper presents a prototype of a base station communications platform based on the ETSI standard reconfigurable architecture. The communication platform presented in this paper is implemented as an ETSI standard reconfigurable architecture using a general-purpose DSP (Digital Signal Processor). In the implemented prototype, we verify the real-time feasibility of communication protocol updates through software reconfiguration.

  • We have proposed and implemented a novel cost-effective optical subcarrier mutiplexing transceiver for base station without light sources in which optical signal can be transmitted bidirectionally over a single optical fiber. Modulated optical signal is retransmitted from the base station to the central office using a ring-type base station which consists of a circulator and an Mach-Zehnder modulator, where the optical source is supplied from the central office. In order to investigate the feasibility of the proposed base station without light sources, we have measured adjacent channel power ratio and carrier to noise ratio by transmitting the IS-95 CDMA signal and 14 tones carrier signal bidirectionally through the system.

  • This paper studies on Sun interference effects or Sun outage effects on C-band satellite reception signal for THAICOM2. The THAICOM2 satellite is at 78.5 degree East 〔co-located with THAICOM3〕. The down link station was located in Khon-kaen, longitude 102.83 degree East and latitude 16.43 degree North. The antenna diameter is 4.6 meters for C-band downlink station. Total 9 times of sun interference events were occurred during summer and fall of 2001 and these about 53 minutes altogether. The Maximum CM degradation of the THAICOM2 system was around 11 dB. The Sun interference events of 53 minutes of one year are 0.0122 percents of the C-band contact time when 21 hours of contact time is used f3r broadcasting a day.

  • The Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS) broadcasts to users integrity and correction information for Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) such as GPS and GLONASS using geostationary orbit (GEO) satellites. In accordance with the recommendation of the International Civilian Aeronautical Organization (ICAO) to introduce SBAS until 2025, a Korean SBAS system development / construction project is underway with the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs. Korea Augmentation Satellite System (KASS) is a high precision GPS correction system which is composed of KASS Reference Station (KRS), KASS Processing Station (KPS), KASS Uplink Station (KUS), KASS Control Station (KCS) and GEO satellites. In this paper, we provided the conceptual design of the KASS uplink station, which is composed of the Signal Generator Section (SGS) and the Radio-Frequency Section (RFS), and interface between the KASS ground sector and the GEO satellite.

  • To facilitate the base station planning in high speed railway communication systems, it is necessary to consider the functional relationships between the base station transmit power and space parameters such as train velocity and cell radius. Since these functions are able to present some inherent system properties determined by its spatial topology, they will be referred to as the power-space functions in this paper. In light of the fact that the line-of-sight path persists the most power of the received signal of each passing train, this paper considers the average transmission rate and bounds on power-space functions based on the additive white Gaussian noise channel (AWGN) model. As shown by Monte Carlo simulations, using AWGN channel instead of Rician channel introduces very small approximation errors, but a tractable mathematical framework and insightful results. Particularly, lower bounds and upper bounds on the average transmission rate, as well as transmit power as functions of train velocity and cell radius are presented in this paper. It is also proved that to maintain a fixed amount of service or a fixed average transmission rate, the transmit power of a base station needs to be increased exponentially, if the train velocity or cell radius is increased, respectively.

  • Train control by radio based communication is one of the interesting new fields in train signal. The radio based control has more benefits, low headway and low construction and maintenance cost, than conventional control. In this paper, a safe and efficient train operation is introduced. Triple radio communications, train to train, train to station, and train to central traffic control, are used to increase the reliability. One of these communications channels has a fault; the others can take the functions of it. Absolute position of a train is transmitted to station via radio communication. In the station, the interlocking mechanism should be activated as the legacy.

  • In the initial stage of the communications between a base station and a satellite transponder, the base station transmits the frequency-sweeping un-modulated up-link carrier within a certain frequency range to acquire the doppler frequency shift and signal power between the base station and the satellite in orbital flight. The satellite transponder acquires and tracks the carrier in order to initialize the communication. To control such initialization process, the satellite receiver should analyze the input carrier signal in various ways. This paper presents an SNR estimation algorithm to control the initialization process. The proposed algorithm converts the input signal into the baseband polar coordinate representation and estimates the SNR via the statistics of the angular signal components as well as the status parameters to control the receiver. The Monte-Carlo simulations shows the validity of the estimation proposed.

  • In this paper, we proposed a handoff decision method based on signal-to-interference ratio(SIR) of the pilot channel in order to perform a handoff more effectively and to complement disadvantages - deterioration quality of a call, decreasing capacity of the system, and wasting power of the mobile station - which is caused when handoff is performed by the classical method that execute a handoff based on received signal strength. Moreover, when we change that the minimum threshold, the cell loading which is defined active traffic channels to total traffic channels ratio, and the fraction of the transmit power from base station allocated to the pilot channel on the forward link of a DS-CDMA system, we analyzed mean numbers of handoff depending on hysteresis level during the mobile station moving from one base station to another base station.
