  • This paper presents a commonality and variability analysis method for UML CASE tool frameworks. Commonality and Variability analysis increase extension and reusability by separating common area and variable area. We suggest class category based on property and the notation to represent commonality and variability. It is also implements frameworks based on analysis method and verify method using defect removal efficiency.

  • The purpose of this paper is to understand the meaning of 'institution' in Louis Kahn's architecture and to reveal that it is expressed through singularity and commonality, which have two aspects; formal-material(eidos-hyle) aspect and phenomenological aspect. Under these recognitions, this paper shows the detail analysis on design process of Phillips Exeter Academy Library, focusing on his writings and sketches. The results are as follows. First, the basic form is maintained through the design process of the Exeter library, and it is derived from the consideration of the human activities in the library. And second, each 'room' of the library acquires its singularity through structure and light. And the 'plan' is based on the commonality inherent in the singularity of each room. And the last, singularity and commonality are revealed not only In the relation of architectural elements but also In the relation with man and architecture.

  • Service engineering is a new discipline which aims at basically understanding of service and a concrete methodology using engineering approach for service design. In this paper is introduced the serviset graph [7] which is a comprehensive concept to represent service products, processes, and operation activities. The proposed concept is a degree of commonality index in a service product in order to deal with service mass customization using the input-output analysis in economic model.

  • This paper presents a quantitative measure of the degree of part commonality and redundancy in a product line based on entropy measure of information theory. The several possible methods of analysis are discussed and the use of the entropy measure is discussed. These commonality and redundancy measure can be applied to analyze the usage pattern of part across a product line and to determine which parts have the broadest usage across the firm's product lines. An analysis of the results by entropy statistics is compared with the practical part usage in a simulation of several types of part usage's distributions.

  • Vernacular houses in Southeast Asia are basically post and beam structures raised on pillars, with gabled roofs. They were designed and built by the people themselves to meet specific needs, accommodating the values, economies and ways of life of cultures that produce them. Their forms and housing cultures are very various according to the country and the region. But based on the common history and culture, the vernacular houses in Southeast definitely have commonality. The purpose of this study is to analyse the commonality and diversity of the vernacular houses in Southeast Asia in the aspect of two different perspectives. One is the climate perspective, for which the analysis was made on the primary characteristics such as the climate, material, structure of the vernacular houses. The other one is the social-cultural perspective which try to find the religion, belief, life style and social and family relationship which controlled the forms of the housing under the surface. As a result, this study summarise and find the outstanding and unique meaning and definition of the vernacular houses in Southeast Asia.

  • When you develop component, you can offer reusability and extension by analyzing commonality and variability about attribute and behavior. Therefore Component that analyzing commonality and variability are use for the purpose of reducing discord of function and adaptedness. I wish to research reusability and extension of component by analysis commonality and variability of component that exist by domain in this paper, extractfunctionofcomponentbybehavioranalysis.

  • To compete global marketplace, many firms are adopting product families to increase variety, satisfy customer requirements, shorten lead-times and reduce costs. The key to a successful product family is the platform from which it is derived. When designing product families, it is important to resolve the tradeoff between product commonality and distinctiveness. To measure the commonality within a product family, it is necessary to develop the commonality index. It utilizes different parameters such as the number of common components, their cost, their manufacturing processes and so on. This paper present a new product family assessment index using the benchmarking method and considering environmental performance called green product family index(GPFI). Through the comparison analysis between some previous developed commonality indices and GPFI, we verify the suitability and effectiveness. Eventually, the proposed a new green product family assessment index can be helpful to design and develop the environmentally conscious product families.

  • Product line analysis is an activity for analyzing requirements, their relationships, and constraints in a product line before engineering product line assets (e.g., architectures and components). A feature-oriented commonality and variability analysis (called feature modeling) has been considered an essential part of product line analysis. Commonality and variability analysis, although critical, is not sufficient to develop reusable and adaptable product line assets. Dependencies among features and feature binding time also have significant influences on the design of product line assets. In this paper. we propose a feature-oriented product line analysis model that extends the existing feature model in terms of three aspects (i.e., feature commonality and variability, feature dependency, and feature binding time). To validate the consistency among the three aspects we formally define the feature-oriented product line analysis model and provide rules for checking consistency.

  • Software product line engineering is a method that prepares for the future reuse and supports to seamless reuse in application development process. Commonality and variability play central roles in all product line development processes. Reusable assets will become core assets by explicitly representing C&V. Indeed, the variabilities that art identified at each phase of core assets development have different levels of abstraction. In the past, these variabilities have been handled in an implicit manner and without distinguishing the characteristics of each core assets. In addition, previous approaches have depended on the experience and intuition of a domain expert to recognize commonality and variability. In this paper, we suggest a 2-dimensional analyzing method that analyzes the variabilities of core assets in software product line. In horizontal analysis process, the variation types are analyzed in requirements, architecture, and component that are produced at each phase of development process. In vertical analysis process, variations are analyzed in different abstract levels, in which the region of commonality is identified and the variation points are refined. By this method, the traceability of variations between core assets will be possible and core assets can be reused seamlessly.

  • In the Product Line Engineering (PLE), current studies about an analysis of the feature have uncertain and ad-hoc criteria of analysis based on developer’s intuition or domain expert’s heuristic approach and difficulty to extract explicit features from a product in a product line because the stakeholders lack comprehensive understanding of the features in feature modeling. Therefore, this paper proposes a model of the analyzing commonality and variability of the feature based on the Ontology. The proposed model in this paper suggests two approaches in order to solve the problems mentioned above: First, the model explicitly expresses the feature by making an individual feature attribute list based on the meta feature modeling to understand common feature. Second, the model projects an analysis model of commonality and variability using the semantic similarity between features based on the Ontology to the stakeholders. The main contribution of this paper is to improve the reusability of distinguished features on developing products of same line henceforth.
